Hm, how do I add the menus? I made one with ID 1, set the dialog's Menu to 1, and compiled it, and DialogBox fails with error 13 (invalid data). Looking at it in Resource Hacker, the script doesn't seem to make any sense. It's all chopped up.
1 MENUEX
LANGUAGE LANG_ENGLISH, SUBLANG_ENGLISH_US
{
POPUP "Vegetable", 1, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED, 0
{
MENUITEM "Pota", 100, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
POPUP "", 0, MFT_BITMAP | MFT_MENUBARBREAK | MFT_MENUBREAK, MFS_ENABLED, 0
{
MENUITEM "", 116, MFT_STRING | MFT_MENUBARBREAK | MFT_MENUBREAK, MFS_DISABLED
POPUP "lery", 128, MFT_STRING, MFS_DISABLED, 0
{
MENUITEM "imal", 129, MFT_STRING, MFS_DISABLED
MENUITEM "", 0, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
}
POPUP "", 99, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED | MFS_CHECKED, 0
{
MENUITEM "", 201, MFT_STRING, MFS_ENABLED
POPUP "", 114, MFT_STRING | MFT_MENUBARBREAK | MFT_MENUBREAK, MFS_GRAYED, 0
{
POPUP "nda", 128, MFT_STRING, MFS_DISABLED | MFS_CHECKED | MFS_HILITE, -1865940796
{
}
}
}
}
}
}

The menu being laid out like so:
Vegetable [ID 1]
-> Potato [100]
-> Carrot [101]
-> Celery [102]
Animal [2]
-> Chicken [200]
-> Kangaroo [201]
-> Panda [202]

(The same happens if I don't set an ID, just making them all 0...)

Well that makes two of us who think so. Dammit. I don't want to have to find another whole resource editor just because this one can't make a menu properly... Maybe I'll just hack up something to generate them at runtime. That being said, er... how do you do that? I've made a right-click popup menu before, it's just a matter of how to make it the window's menu.

[edit] Come to think of it... I'm completely clueless about keeping track of controls over multiple dialogs. Like what if I have 2 controls on 2 different dialogs with the same name? The only solution I can think of is to include the dialog's name in every control's name, which would make it rather tedious having to type out the entire thing every time. And if dialog 0 has a button as control 1, and dialog 1 has an edit box as #1, then when I go to reference the controls, how do I differentiate between them? Then there's the handle issue. To call GetDlgItem or whatever it was every time I need to reference a control would probably be really slow, so I've been keeping an array of each control's handle referenced by its ID. Of course, having multiple dialogs again brings up the issue of multiple controls sharing an ID, meaning the only feasible way to do such a thing would be something like a 2D array indexing by both the dialog's ID and the control's, and that again has the problem of having to type out the dialog's name every time you reference a control.

Yep, I updated my layout. (Note the version number. If you can't see it, hit ctrl+F5.) Changes include:
  • No more stretching! Post area now scrolls left and right if necessary. (Still stretches vertically though, because vertical scrolling layouts r teh sux0r.) - removed, caused too many weird bugs.
  • Smaller title bar font, looks better in Linux.
  • Links now have an invisible border, so things don't move when you hover over them.
  • Custom list bullets.
  • Code sections now scroll instead of leaking and stretching and use Courier.
  • Shrunk links in link window so they don't wrap around as much.
  • Changed title bar layout.
  • Fixed title bar's close button.
  • More stats and smaller font in Debug window.

Very nice feature more people ought to use (for that matter, implement it in the main board ): If I post something really long, instead of stretching the page, the entire post area scrolls to the right. Observe:

Removed the text. It just works the same way as the code box.

(Yay for <nobr>. ) Note, though, that a really long post does not scroll vertically. And the best part is, everything that doesn't stretch past the edge of the box still wraps normally. See how you don't have to scroll to read this text? I'm not sure the same is true of IE but it is in Firefox.

The same applies to individual code sections, which is especially nice because they used to have a tendency to really stretch things out. Check it out:
if(!IsComputerOn())
{
MessageBox(NULL,"Your computer is off... Wait, how the hell?","WTF?",MB_OK);
Panic();
}

I think I've got all the bugs worked out except one (that was me who made borders on all the links for a few minutes ), hopefully everyone else will think so too. There might be a gap at the right, I couldn't help it without stretching the page a bit, but it doesn't seem to occurr often. It seems like sometimes the main post box stretches too far and forces the links window to be really small... I'm not sure if it's a layout problem or just a Firefox bug. (I've seen similar in other places and it seems to be random.) The only bug I know of for sure is that visited links don't have a border when you hover over them; can that be done? I don't see anything on any CSS sites for visited-hover.

Yeah, that's happened to me too. Random rendering bugs. (But hell, beats consistent rendering bugs the developers ignore. )
With the scrollbar, I figured it's better to have to scroll the post area than to have the entire page stretch. I don't often post things that would stretch it anyway. (Of course, best way would be if I could encase entire blocks of stretchiness in boxes with their own bars, but I wouldn't count on that happening. )

I still can't seem to get it to take up all the space of the post area though. Notice how the last post's text doesn't stretch all the way to the end, so it's actually shrunk down to the text size. If I specify a width for the main table it stretches the page.

Personally I think it'd be better to do it the way some boards do and make each post a specific width. I'm not sure exactly how it works but if one post stretches way out, the rest stay their regular size. Then you could use the normal scrollbar to scroll them. I can't very well do that in a layout though.

Maybe I should take that big stretchy thing out now. You get the idea.

Posted on 05-15-05 03:16 PM, in CSS style sheet disabled by default Link
[edit #3] Worked out a PHP-based, non-Javascript theme selector (and navbar, so the entire site is in fact useable without JS, a nice bonus I hadn't expected ). Still having that border problem though. To clarify, the page uses multiple style sheets and toggles them on/off with Javascript, or in the non-JS case (where the problem still seems to occurr ) spits out a different link for each one.[/edit]

[edit #1] Hm, there also seems to be some sort of problem with the switching. The code just disables all of them, then enables one. It seems to work but one particular class doesn't refresh entirely. It's a table whose border is a different size in each style sheet. For some reason after loading them all, the border is always 1 pixel. The themes define said table as such:

.navbar td {
border: 4px #209020 ridge;
}

.navbar td {
border: 2px dashed #FFC0C0;
}

.navbar td {
border: 1px dotted #4080C0;
}

The table:
<table class="navbar" width=100%><tr> <!-- navbar -->
<td><a href="index.html">Home</a></td>
[...]

(I'd post that in the code tag, but then the tag doesn't close. )

All the rest of it works fine, the table even changes colours and border styles, but it won't get any thicker.
[edit #2] Actually it looks like it just sticks with whatever border size is defined in the first style sheet that gets loaded. (It remembers what style you used last.) If I start with the first theme, then it's always 4 pixels.

*kicks the code tag for sucking *

I still seem to be getting random bugs though... Sometimes it doesn't stretch to fill the post area, or a vertical scrollbar appears when there's not even enough text to warrant one. Anyone else seeing these?

Bah, I'm taking that scrollbar out. It keeps acting up. One of my posts even started scrolling vertically.

Anyone know how to get it to fill the entire area without stretching it though?
