Hmm... Come to think of it, wouldn't that make exploiting MSWord files ridiculously easy? I'd always wondered why there seemed to be so much garbage in those files. |

Cool, found it. Is it possible to force a specific font and width (IE wrap at 80 characters) for the Command Results though? My makefiles tend to use extended DOS characters and rely on the wrapping style the DOS box uses (mainly for separating program output from compiler output) so they look rather crappy in Textpad.

It really depends on what you mean by first. The first time I remember using a computer was DOS, but I didn't really get to use it, just play games on it. The first OS/GUI I actually used was some old Mac OS at school; the first few times it was using some weird shell for kids but later I got to use the real shell too. The first I ever owned was a C64, though I don't remember any sort of GUI. The first GUI would have been Win 3.1, which I managed to completely screw up by just unzipping a file with a space in its name. (And then later fix by manually hex-editing the hard drive to rename it.)

XP on this, I would have SP2 but it doesn't seem to be compatible with something. (Windows refuses to start up. ) The other computer I never use has 98, I'm thinking about installing XP on it for testing though. I had Mandrake 9.1 on this one for a while (actually it's still on the old HD, but inaccessible ) but I didn't really like it, mainly because I'd have to find Linux versions of all my programs (and for that matter, re-write a lot of my own, especially the VB ones). It also seemed to have some weird bugs, like it would go all warped in anything higher than 1024x768 and at one point just did a really weird crash with garbage on the screen. I know just because it crashed once doesn't mean it's bad, but that was under very little CPU load; I'd be worried it wouldn't work so well doing more intense stuff. Also I just didn't like the feel of it... Not sure what it was, just didn't seem comfortable.

How exactly does this IconBox work? You like drag the window into it? Could be a fun project to work on for Windows. I was already planning on making a replacement taskbar when I get a bit better at C (made one in VB, slow as hell of course ), it could be neat to include some of these other styles as well. The menu in BlackBox... I assume it's just like a really small taskbar, that instead of showing the windows in it, you click it and get a menu of them? I can see that being useful... |

Every player I've seen uses alphabetical order, so numbering them should work. You should probably check if the files on the CD are named the same as they were originally.

I was actually planning to try to make a simple shell replacement, but I also intend to release the components separately for those who only want to change the taskbar/file browser/whatever. (You'd still have the original shell running, just with its taskbar hidden and a new one in its place, or a different program associated with folders, or whatever.) That probably won't be for a while, though. As far as various buttons for shading, minimizing to an icon box, etc, I might look into hooking the titlebar drawing code to put extra buttons on (user chooses which, and all options are also available from the context menu), if not it'll probably just be a hacky kinda one like the program I made before. (Come to think of it, those could be some cool features to add to it. ) |

Well that's the idea. If you're going to use something like that to download nasties, you wait until after everyone has scanned and approved it. Originally posted by Kitten Yiffer I wouldn't even really call it adware, even though that is the right term. Most people associate that with spyware and other bad stuff, which isn't the case here. Text ads are fine with me (hell, I'd even consider putting them in my programs if I needed the cash ) as long as they don't try to screw with things. (But it's always a good idea to explicitally say something like "THIS PROGRAM USES TEXT ADS ONLY", not just "ad-supported", lest it end up classified as spyware anyway. )
I really wouldn't think so. Turning scripts off helps security, but it certainly doesn't make it completely secure. IE can be crashed/exploited in a number of non-script-related ways such as crafty ActiveX, JPEG buffer overflows, certain unclosed tag/CSS patterns, etc. (Did they ever even fix that unprintable character bug? Where going to something like 'www.site.com*@www.site2.com' where * is an unprintable character takes you to www.site2.com but shows www.site.com in the URL box... Could be very easily exploited by something like this. ) |

I've heard 'coe-lin' used before, but it's clearly 'call-in'. Look at the word, it ends in a consonant. That means o = 'ahh' and i = 'ih'. If you're going to say 'coe-lin' you may as well say 'coe-line', at least your incorrect grammar will be consistent. As far as Linux, I always used to say 'line-uks' because that's how it looks, but I switched to 'lin-uks' after hearing others say it. Just about everyone says it that way. (Similar to 'anim |

Lol, I've seen this before. Fun, but you need to be able to maintain it yourself... One nice trick is to know how the compiler will interpret expressions like "x = 2 * 5 + 3 & 21" and use it to your advantage. Or just cause all sorts of mayhem with #define. And of course, you can write all sorts of horribly unreadable code in ASM. Look at Tetris for Game Boy for examples. Jumping to partway through an instruction or data block, or using instructions like "ld b,b" in place of "nop" and "ld bc, $5678; push bc; ld hl,$1234; jp hl" in place of "call $1234" - especially where it isn't at all necessary - is always a nice way to confuse people. For that matter, if you REALLY want to confuse them, take a big data file, disassemble it, and copy and paste it into your code. Make it look like a real procedure. Maybe even start it off with a small chunk of useless data that includes a 'ret' instruction and call it. |

So when you modify the array, you're actually modifying the image? That's probably the problem. I did it in VB, so without pointers I had to copy the image to an array and back which was very confusing.

I thought he might have meant that. So don't use layer priority, just make Mario go behind stuff? What would be the difference exactly?

Er, I meant a specific font for the command results. So what exactly would make MessageBox() not work? Even something as simple as MessageBox(0,"Message box!","Title bar!",0) just makes the box sound and hangs the program, but no box appears. And how do I make the window not show up in the taskbar?
