Fyxe shoulda brought back some of the older layout pics, he'd have won by a landslide.

Heh, I figured BMF would be ahead of me. Poor guy has to do SMW pretty much all alone, I'm surprised he's still alive.
And, eh... where are the counts?

I bet Colleen remembers when he had to walk uphill both ways to a rotary powered modem to post in the snow.

That's your biggest hint there... The HDs should start up as soon as there's power to them, regardless if it's connected to anything. Just in case, try it with the IDE cables disconnected, to eliminate the possibility that your CPU is telling them to do something funny.

And BMF, why is your avatar still wearing a Santa hat?

Crap, he's right, random numbers could be a big problem. I guess it might be possible to hack the RNGs to both use the same seed or something along those lines though.

This certainly sounds like a good idea. We have several inactive staff members, a whopping 10 admins, and a few forums that desparately need more mods (or even any mods). Look at poor BMF, practiacally all alone handling both SMW and ROM Hacking (Earth to Fu, come in Fu, where are you?) and nobody in Programming or Help & Suggestions.

Well of course Opera is going to use a lot, the question is if the usage keeps going up. 33MB does seem like a lot for Winamp though; a faulty plugin could be to blame.

I haven't heard anything about it, and there's not much a DLL could do on its own. Consider running msconfig and checking your startup entries. If you're using XP, I don't think there should be any DLLs in there; under Win98 you might see a few instances of powerprof.dll or something like that. (Any DLLs would be listed under rundll32.exe.)

Sure it's not just a warning or error message related to this file?

Nice! It's hacks like these that make me wonder why Nintendo always went with such plain graphics, when they can fit so much better into the same space.

Even though that's true, there was no need to post it here. This isn't a discussion about which browser to use, it's about why a program called iexplore.exe (not necessarily IE) is running when it shouldn't be. And try to use better grammar and less caps, please.

DLLs aren't directly executable, they just contain functions that other programs can call. The only way for code in a DLL to be run 'alone' is to use RunDLL32 to call it.

Also, if you're doing a full virus scan, it's probably nothing. I did one last night, just for the hell of it, and it warned me about various system files such as kernel32 and user32 being modified. It's probably just doing a checksum of them, not accounting for changes made by security updates. (Didn't find any actual virus, but it did delete a program which isn't a virus but for some reason is listed in AV databases. )

I like the idea. I've been pondering making some of my editors open-source if I ever get around to actually finishing the damn things. (Actually, I'd love to get to work on Hack-O-Matic but that damn compression gets in the way, and I can't get LC to work for some reason. )

You realize you're talking about sending 24MB to each system every frame? That'd require each user to have both upload and download speeds, simultaneously, of ~1.4GB/sec, not to mention the time it takes to actually copy that much data into and out of RAM.

Really, synchronization and random number generation are the only big problems. If you can slow down the game to wait for a packet (or have a fast enough connection that you don't need to), and can hack the random number generators to always match eachother (either give them all the same seed and reset them simultaneously, or hack them to get all random numbers from the master system, which could simply supply one with each packet), it should work out.

Actually, does the BIOS have a built-in RNG? That could make it a heck of a lot easier.

Ripping graphics is easy. Make a save state when the graphic you want is on the screen, and open it in TLP; every graphic on the screen (and usually a bunch more) will be there uncompressed. Just copy it to your ExGFX file and figure out the palettes. The only problems you might encounter are tricky tile arrangements, or games that use 8BPP graphics which SMW (and for that matter TLP) doesn't support.

...Is it possible for SMW to use 8BPP graphics? Or would that require sacrificing another BG layer? I've only ever seen it done in Tetris Attack, which doesn't really need more than one layer (though two would make it a lot easier to do background animations and such) and a bunch of sprites.

How many games have you tried it with? I think the saves have a byte that tells whether you can move it or not, which is up to the game to choose. (Should be easy to hack though. )
Or can you even move saves onto the HD? I think I heard something about that being difficult, if not impossible to do. (Though I don't see how they'd have got the saves off the HD if that were the case, unless it's modded. Not much point either if you can't use them.)

Actually, I found something rather odd, but I dunno how I did it. I was in level 12 and all of a sudden all the sound effects started to echo. The Goomba sounds were really weird too, as if there were like 6 times as many Goombas. (All the other sounds were only multiplied twice.) Even when I quit the game and went back to the title screen it kept doing that. Everything else was the same, though. Teh weird.

And damn that monkey. I dove at him and fell all the way back down to the bottom.

I'll look into that. Does it come with a resource builder? If not, what should I use for that? Also does it optimize big switch statements into jump tables? I was hoping to write an emulator (big project I know, but I already wrote the essentials in VB, it's just too slow) and I'd like it to be as fast as possible. (Even though it's only emulating a 4Mhz Z80. )
