Eh, maybe it's just my computer "self-optimizing" again by removing a few random instructions. (Inside joke. ) I always got errors when starting it up, either that or it would crash when opening the file, plus there was a zillion little bugs in the IDE itself.

[edit] Hmm, both of those functions want a "Handle to the module whose executable file contains the dialog box template". How do I get that?
Nevermind... I got it, and it works! Now if only the window would actually close. (Of course given that I didn't provide any message handler, I'm surprised it works at all. I was just expecting it to compile and crash right away, at least that would mean I did it right.)
Now, the question is how do I make it send messages for controls? Like I have a button on the dialog, but the message handler isn't getting anything from it.

See if you can find out what could be causing such a surge then, there's not much that would be turning on/off at night. A fridge would be the most likely culprit (they use a lot of energy, and like anything with a motor, the power draw is significantly bigger when they first start up), also check out heaters and such.

When you say it doesn't happen with normal shutdown, I wonder if this could be a bug in the hibernate code? Perhaps it isn't telling some device to shut off properly, so it ends up turning the computer back on.

Although if it is a ghost, I wonder if it's the same one who keeps turning my alarm clock off? Twice now I've woke up to find it shut off with no memory of doing so, and I KNOW it was on before. (Couldn't be a defective clock, the switch has to actually slide over.)

- Some pennies. (Why do people put them in there? )

The scientific law that pennies in water bring good luck is not restricted to fountains. Any body of water seems to work. Or so research has said.

Well...it makes sense for it to work in places other than fountains, but...a toilet? That's just fucking ridiculous.

Good luck is good luck, whether it's surrounded by shit or not.

But what's the point of good luck if it's surrounded by shit?

Would you rather have BAD luck surrounded by shit?

*ooh! a quote pyramid is forming! yay!*

There's not much difference; if good luck is surrounded by shit, it's almost as bad as having bad luck surrounded by shit.

See, the shit is irrelevant. It does not hurt the abstract idea of luck at all. It's just the water itself that triggers that lucky penny to shine to its fullest. I think. Sure, I'm a scientist now...

Anyone that replies should PROBABLY delete the quote pyramid...

That shouldn't make a difference. Fast-forward just cuts some of the delay loops in the emulation, it shouldn't change anything in the game.

And then there's the other universes to think about. There's no possible way we could be the ONLY life forms capable of thought in all of existance. No way.

You hit the nail clean on the head. All that supposedly-infinite space out there, there simply has to be others. For that matter, if the universe is truly endless, there must even be duplicates, for there is a limited number of combinations of everything. (Don't bother trying to count it, though. ) The question is, are they ever going to contact us? Not likely. The universe is too big for most people to comprehend; the distance from here to the sun alone is so long that it takes 8 minutes to cross it at the speed of light. (Yes, that means it takes that long for sunlight to get here. That's one of the biggest problems with long-distance space travel - radio signals only move that fast, eliminating the possibility of real-time communication.) Now, our studies have shown that there is no intelligent life that we can see on several, if not all, planets in our solar system. (Or so we're told, anyway.) The next solar system is a HUGE distance away. For any race to get here from there, they would have to be far more advanced than us, and then surely they'd be able to hide their presence, if they even wanted to come here. Why should they, when we're so primitive compared to them? And of course, it's just as likely that they're no more, or even less, advanced than us, in which case they're in the exact same situation as we are.

One thing that kinda bugs me, though, is people who insist that any aliens that exist must be similar to humans. People say that there couldn't be life on Mars because it can't support life. Who says they need what we do to stay alive? It's just as likely that they breathe methane and feed off the sun, or even something totally different you'd never imagine. They don't necessarily have to look like us, either. They could be a different type of being altogether, something that we can't even perceive with our senses. Hell, maybe all the spaceships people claim to be seeing are the aliens themselves!

In closing, I'd like to just point out one fact that people don't seem to be able to understand: ALIENS NEED NOT BE HOSTILE. I hate how that War Of The Worlds thing went and screwed this up for everyone. It's much more likely that any extraterrestrial intelligent life that we should meet would want to befriend us, or even just leave us alone and/or study us from a distance. Just because aliens come here does NOT mean the Earth is going to be destroyed!

That's really the frontend's job, not the emulator's. It would be kinda neat but mostly just wasteful.
Now, what would be useful is the ability, if it doesn't exist already, to specify paths for everything. I like to keep my ROMs in one folder, SRAM in another, save states in another and so on, but a lot of emus insist on bundling them all together.

Er, you didn't just burn the ISO file itself to the CD did you? You have to open it with something like Nero, which will extract the files and burn them to the CD.

Posted on 01-09-05 09:04 PM, in Dreams (And Freaky Coincidences) Link
My dreams rarely connect to eachother, though it's not uncommon for me to come across a place in one dream that was in another. For that matter, I often have multiple dreams in the same place, despite that said place is just something my mind made up. Usually, it's a combination of several places, sometimes a replica of a real place, or in a few cases just randomness. I've noticed that the logical part of my brain shuts off, so no matter what happens, it never triggers a "wtf, that doesn't make sense" reaction. (In fact, that's happened once or twice when I was awake enough to actually control the dream, and it would just wake me up. ) Also I rarely remember anything from reality or other dreams, and things tend to just change unexpectedly (but as I said, I don't find it unusual). I have dreamed the future, it's very strange.

Some of my weirder dreams:

Quite simply, it was Mario 64. Perfect to the last detail. Mario was falling from the sky (presumably off that owl) near the start of level 2. Only problem is, this was several years before the game was invented.

Another consisted of me and several other people I didn't know, at a place in town (really exists) where there's 2 bridges going over a river. It was dark, but it wasn't night, and people were just walking/biking in a circle across the two. Eventually, a door in the dark-purple sky opened up, and behind it was the normal blue, cloudy sky. Everyone was watching. I think I recall a hand reaching out but that probably didn't really happen... It's sorta symbolic, like we all knew nothing more than what we saw, until something came out of the sky to show us more. Freaky.

The last one I'm going to bother bringing up is one where I was unusually aware of my physical body. I was driving, and felt like I had to sneeze, so I actually pulled over, put the car in park, woke up and sneezed. Like somehow I knew I had to sneeze, so I felt it in the dream, which is rather unusual.

It's a nice place, that's for sure. At least, outside of the major cities like Toronto, it's nice and clean, not a lot of crime, and big open spaces. It's not really as cold as some people say everywhere... Up North, sure, it gets damn cold. Here in South Ontario though, it's about the same weather as say New York (since it's not that far from there ). It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer, just like any other place... Only gripe I have is that winter lasts too damn long. It's like there's no spring sometimes, it just warms up around late May.

Alberta really is nice, and much better to drive in too, since the roads are all flat and straight. Some places you quite literally could fall asleep at the wheel and wake up in the middle of the road out of gas. (Not that you should try it. ) Problem is there's not much between towns except looooong stretches of road.

Also, yes, the laws are a bit less strict. It's especially nice that we're allowed to download whatever the hell music we want (for now anyway). In return, blank CDs cost more, but bah, I just buy a CDRW and burn MP3s to it.

One thing you can do is just play a recording of a modem. They'll either think they mis-dialed or realize you don't want to buy anything, and some computerized systems might even think it's real and delete the number. (That's basically how the Telezapper works. Of course it only takes a slight change to their programs to defeat it, so I wouldn't bother. )

Generally you don't want to be an ass, they're just doing their job. But if they're being especially annoying, you can have a lot of fun with them. Like if they ask for the man/woman of the house, have a dog bark in the phone. Or yell things in the background, like "don't pull it out, it'll just cut you up worse!", and just try to freak them out. Or if you know it's one right away, you can try to make them think they've somehow called a very distant country and are paying hefty long distance charges for it. (Just answer in Japanese, when they reply in English, explain in a Japanese accent that this is Panasonic Technical Support, $1.95 a minute or some such. ) All sorts of fun ways of saying STFU - including, of course, just saying STFU. (Though in some places I think you can actually get charged for harassing them like that. So just stick to making them not want to talk to you.)

Wait, what? I never tried to write a GBA emulator. I tried a GBC one - in fact, I did get a CPU emulator going, it was just too slow in VB. (Gonna try again in C sometime. ) And I have indeed made some GBC homebrew stuff. I just need to figure out a filesystem for SRAM and it'll be complete. (Kinda difficult when you only have 32K to work with. I'd rather just store the programs on an SRAM chip and let them modify themselves, but no emulator supports that. )
