Could be nice, but of course most of the 'jobs' are things that are quite difficult, if not impossible, to do. (Since if it's easy enough, it'd be on PSC.) Stable multithreading in VB6, haha. Programs to cheat at online casinos, I think not.

Heh, we used to have one that clogged. It never actually overflowed, because we managed to shut it off in time, but there were some pretty close calls. I've also seen entire rolls of paper in toilets at school. But I'd come back a few minutes later and they'd be flushed fine. Those things never clog. |

How long have you been collecting those pics anyway, Kawa? I notice some have BBS numbers on them. So as long as we're on the subject... Who thinks Card Captor Sakura is hot? I don't, but she looks like she could turn out well in a few years. ...Sorry, I'm very, very tired. Originally posted by Melvin Thanks for the tip. Well the only reasons one would want to unlock the hack are to rip levels or graphics, figure out the ASM hacks, or find secrets, and there are problems with all of these. The levels are encrypted so even if you got LM to open them, they wouldn't look right unless you actually cracked the encryption too (and everyone would know). The graphics could be ripped in other, much easier ways. The ASM hacks are most likely not related to the hack being locked but probably are designed for the specific type of ROM used (ExHiROM I think), so they wouldn't work in the type LM saves in. (The public version won't save in that format.) And there's a FAQ available which I'm sure would be much easier, or you could just cheat.

I can't say I really like the sound of a hack without powerups. It'd be pretty difficult, unless you're hacking in some other method, like a health bar or something.Originally posted by Trashykins Not yet, sorry. I haven't forgotten, though. FYI, the reason that option is disabled is that there isn't actually anything there yet. |

The missing files problem is more than likely a virus, but could be a hard drive problem. Try rebooting and running scandisk in safe mode. (Interesting note, though: Yesterday I copied a folder from the Program Files on my new (currently broken) Windows install to the old one that I was running (had to copy the movie player to watch Ranma ). It should have been in both, but it wasn't... So I copied it from the other drive, and went to open the movie again... The folder I'd just copied was gone! Any time I copied it there, it would disappear as soon as I opened another window. The only way I got it to stay was to actually open the folder. So you aren't the only one who's had this sort of a problem... I don't suspect a virus, though, AVG is running 24/7. |
As far as your CD-ROM problem, I also had a similar experience. In my case the drive refused to eject, so I had to do it manually with a paper clip, and after doing so Windows still insisted there was a CD inside and would cause errors trying to read it. Your problem sounds similar, that the drive or Windows itself hasn't acknowledged the drive being opened/closed. The only way I managed to fix this was to reboot, lucky it only happened once. If possible, connect a different drive for a while; if it happens again, it's most likely a Windows problem or a faulty cable. Although, before you go doing all that... Have you cleaned it? Dust does strange things to electronics, especially when high-precision lasers are involved. As for the system restore problem, I can't imagine why it didn't go through. Did any errors come up, or did the program seem to have just crashed? Often when a program has seemed to stop responding, it's really just busy. If the program doesn't respond to window messages (what Windows uses to tell a program the mouse is being clicked, the window's been maximized, etc) after a certain time Windows assumes it's caught in an endless loop, but in most cases it's simply a very long loop (hence why it doesn't actually close the program on its own) and will start working again once it's done. (You'll usually notice this if making the program do a lot more than the programmers would have expected; Photoshop does this frequently when applying complex filters to large images.) If the operation appeared to complete successfully, though, then I can't think of a reason it wouldn't have worked. BTW, VLC Media Player is a great program if you can put up with the interface. Not sure if it supports SWF, but it's nice to have in general. (Unlike M$'s bloated media players, it plays everything at full speed on this slow computer. )

For those who don't understand, Hibernate mode cuts the power completely just like a normal shutdown, but dumps the memory to the hard drive first, just like making a save state. |
Anyway, it's not possible for such a device to actually power the computer, but you're quite close. There's a few reasons a computer could turn itself on: 1) If the BIOS supports it, some computers can be set to turn on at a specific time. Even if you haven't set this option, it's possible that the program that does it (part of the BIOS) is buggy. 2) Many devices such as modems and network cards can be configured to automatically turn the computer on when they detect incoming traffic or a phone call (if your modem is connected to the phone line). Make sure these options are turned off in the Device Manager. (To get there, press the Windows key and Pause, or go to System in the control panel.) 3) A more obvious possibility is a faulty power supply or switch, or a problem with something that can turn the computer on such as mentioned above. 4) Some computers are also set up by default to turn on after a power fKitten Yiffer. If the power supply is too weak, or there's a problem with the electrical system in the house, the power could drop low enough at certain times to trigger this. How old is your computer? Older computers generally have power supplies that can't be controlled by software. (You'll notice that you need to shut it off manually after clicking Shut Down; a newer power supply will shut itself off.) If by chance you have an older power supply such as this, you can rule out most of these possibilities, except for 3 and possibly (but not likely) 4. Most relatively-new computers have newer power supplies that do have this feature, though.

I think this might be a problem with the browser itself, I've seen similar in Mozilla. If I click on a link really quickly (moreso if the mouse is moving at the time) it gets selected but not actually clicked. |

Be careful with that, it's probably hidden for a reason. It could likely damage the monitor if adjusted incorrectly. |
And yes, be very, very careful when working with monitors or TVs. They can hold more than enough power to kill you for a very long time, even when unplugged. Make absolutely sure nothing touches any of the components unless you intend it to, and that you know precisely what you're doing. (That includes little things like sweat drops too.) One wrong move and you could be killed. (So, for legal purposes, don't blame us if you hurt yourself. ) (edited by HyperHacker on 01-05-05 10:50 PM)

Ran it for about 24 hours (busy today ) off a CD, no errors showed up. (I would think there would be a lot more severe problems if that was the case. It worked fine except for a lot of little things before.) |
Bleh, I'm just gonna do system restore until I can figure out what's being messed up here. [edit] Bah! Couldn't get into Safe Mode, surprise surprise. I re-installed (new record, 4 days from previous installation ) and it came up with some error about not finding a function in a DLL. (Doesn't sound good, seeing how it should have just copied a fresh version of it.) Everything else seemed to go fine, but now it's made everything like the crappy school computers! When I start up, it stays at the "Windows is starting up" screen for several minutes with no disk activity, before finally bringing up a login box. (Where on Earth it got the idea that I wanted that, seeing as how I never used it before, set up everything the same way, and only have one account, is beyond me. ) Also, as it usually does, AVG broke when I re-installed so I had to re-install it too. During the installation, a 'Windows Installer' box came up that just said 'Preparing to install' with nothing but a setup icon and a cancel button. I cancelled it and another one popped up when AVG was done installing. (This is exactly what the school computers do, but we traced the problem to being related to MS Office, which I've never had anywhere near this computer. ) So how do I get rid of that login box and get it back to starting up as fast as before? Also, since I had to re-install IE... Jesper pointed this out in another thread: Originally posted by Jesper Can anyone explain how to get into this Custom mode? As soon as I open the install program, it comes up with the usual legal blurb with just OK and Cancel, and then goes straight into installing. There's no place to choose what I want. (Also, I find it funny that IE's setup thanks me for "choosing" M$ products. Though that humour is quickly dissipated when it reboots the system with no more than a "please save all your documents" prompt, which everyone always ignores because it says that every time you install or change anything. ) [edit] Damn quote tags. Firefox might store them differently, I don't really know. The folders are pretty cryptic, though. |
Also, XK, if a program is in the System32 folder or defined in the registry as Kitten Yiffer mentioned, you don't need to specify a path to run it. (A very nice feature indeed. ) I suppose this doesn't need to be open anymore, if everything's working now.

Ugh, you're having the same problems I was. (When you right-click something in the Start menu and choose Open, does that come up too? It did for me before I reinstalled, very annoying indeed.) |
Also I wouldn't be surprised to see a virus that only deletes a few specific files, just to mess with your head. |
