All the references? Like shortcuts, config files, registry entries etc? That'd be rather difficult to do. Any idea how to un-install Visual Source Safe? Or at least make it not ask if I want to add every VB project I open? |

Well I'll check that out. Thanks. Another little problem: I moved My Documents, because I hate the big long path name and some old programs don't work so well with it. Most of it worked fine, I renamed My Pictures and there were no problems. But with My Music, I had created a folder called Music before doing this, so Windows doesn't recognize that as the default folder for music. (It created one, which I deleted.) Can I fix that? (Like whenever something tries to access My Music it ends up there, just like it does with My Pictures which is now Images.) Finally it'd be great if there's a way to hack MSPaint to save with lowercase extensions, or if anyone knows a good alternative that doesn't require .Net. (I might have to write one sometime. ) |

Fill up on Pepsi, watch Inuyasha, and curse at Cogeco for their stupid service cutting me off every half-hour. Thanks to them neither Ranma 1/2 or Card Captors will be done downloading 2005.

Hmm, depending on how much of the work your emulator actually does, this could end up being one of those cool core-only ones that you can just add into anything, like those ones that can be used as Winamp/IRC plugins. Yeah, I figured that out. The option wouldn't show up because I keep the taskbar locked (because it's ugly otherwise and can be accidentally moved/resized). I know how to force MSPaint to save with lowercase extentions but it's annoying having to do that every time. I want it to be that way by default. |

You know you can use periods and commas in your sentences sometimes because otherwise it end up being like a really big run-on sentence which is annoying you know how it is like it's hard to read and stuff. Anyway if it's taking 20 hours to encode, I would ask them about it. No way that can be right. |

That's good to know, but I don't see the relation between PS using up a lot of memory and random CPU usage spikes. (Plus shouldn't all that be cleared when I close the document? This happens even with no files open. )

Forget the API, I'm talking about core Windoze programs themselves, such as the product registration thing (which will shut down your OS if not registered in a month or so) being written entirely in Javascript/VBScript. (WTF?) I think it's working now, not sure how it happened, I just rebooted and it said the install was finished. May as well leave this open tho, since I just know something else will come up. (In fact I am having another annoying problem right now, but unless any of you guys work for Cogeco I doubt you can help. ) |

You know, I recall setting it to the highest year, but I could have sworn I put in the real day and month. *Does so* And yeah, since 2035 is the highest the timestamp will go, there could be massive problems after that. Think Y2K, except for real, because a lot of systems depend on this sort of thing. Though I imagine they'll have worked something out by then. (Anyone who knows a damn thing about hex should have realized that the year 2000 means absolutely nothing to a computer. 2156 maybe, but not 2000.) And the birthday bug was nothing compared to when a security test accidentally set every user's last activity to one minute ago, making every single one show up as online. Just recently too. |

All caps is annoying but the way warez d00ds type is worse. NoT oNLY Do THeY CaPiTaLiZe eVeRYTHiNG eXCePT THe VoWeLS, but they scatter DOS symbols about, which looks shitty in non-DOS fonts (come on, nobody's used those in 10 years), and put it in .nfo files - which is already used by Windoze! What, is .txt not cool enough? -O-f- -c-o-u-r-s-e-,- -t-h-e-r-e- -a-r-e- -e-v-e-n- -m-o-r-e- -a-n-n-o-y-i-n-g- -w-a-y-s- -t-o- -t-y-p-e-. |

3-letter extentions may not be a requirement but they're a standard. As for naming files like that, I know in the DOS days when file exentions other than EXE, COM and BAT didn't mean anything and filenames were limited to 8 letters, that was common. But this is 2005 (for all intents and purposes), nobody uses DOS anymore. Which brings up another point: FILENAMES CAN BE MORE THAN 8 LETTERS NOW! I hate when people insist on using 8-letter names. Though even that's not as bad as installers with totally meaningless names. WTF is ins64xqz-setup-6_28_52_huthuthut.exe? Kyouji: I wanted it to be readable. I could do much worse. |

Somehow I knew Acmlm would make his 1000th post at midnight. Especially seeing how he was at 999 all night. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005! And now I can say that thanks to Cogeco, my downloads which should have only taken ~15 hours are now spanning TWO YEARS and still not done. |

I'm making a simple progress bar control, where you give it a minimum, maximum and value, and it draws these little dots (small images) that represent the value. There are 4 modes: 1) Value given is out of max, starting at min. Eg: max=20, min=5, value=10 means 5/15 (subtract min from both). 2) Value is a percentage of max. 3) Value is the number of dots to draw. 4) Draw a user-specified string determining the colours of each dot. (Eg: 'rrbby' draws 2 red, 2 blue, one yellow.) Mode 4 works (and it has to, since the other 3 modes really just generate strings for it), and mode 3 as well (easy). 1 and 2 have a problem, it's kinda hard to explain. The control calculates the number of dots required to cover its width (or height, in vertical mode). It then calculates how many dots to draw with the 'full' type, and all the rest are drawn with the 'empty' type. (The user chooses which type of dots to use for each.) Now these algorithms work, except for one condition: if (max - min) is less than the number of dots needed to fill the bar, they come out to zero full dots. (I can see why, since the number divided by the number of dots is less than one, just dunno how to fix it.) The algorithms are as follows: For mode 1: Round(nValue / ((nMax - nMin) / NumDots)) For mode 2, same thing, but replace '(nMax - nMin)' with 100. This is VB6 so Round() rounds up or down as necessary, and / refers to real-number division (5 / 2 = 2.5, not 2). So can anyone figure this out? Also, unrelated: How complicated is the BitTorrent protocol? It'd be a neat project to try out if it's not too difficult. [edit] I found the protocol specs, sounds doable. I don't get what lists and dictionaries are for, though. I imagine the dictionaries are for text compression? What do lists do and how are they to be stored? (Like, multiple entries or one in some special format?) (edited by HyperHacker on 01-01-05 01:55 AM) (edited by HyperHacker on 01-01-05 03:21 AM) |
