Everything in the SRAM address range should be saved to the .srm file. Any ideas where the Save Game routine is? As for initializing, I would use a custom block right under/on Mario in the intro level (with the "bowser captured peach again ono" message). You can only visit that level when you start a new game, and it's mandatory. (You don't even need to erase the old values when deleting the file if you don't plan to display them on the file select screen.) |

Depends how much it costs. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks but then I'm not a big fan of the system or M$ in general. (And it doesn't get any points for being a CD/DVD player, because I already have a PS2 that does that just fine without buying extra junk. ) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I would, but it only lets you choose the drive and just dumps it into the root. |

The laptop in question is a (quite old) Compaq Armada 1573DM. The floppy drive won't read disks (gives General FKitten Yiffer/Read Error messages), and the CD drive says not accessible - the disc doesn't appear to spin although I can spin it manually. I don't see any physical problems with either, and they're not IDE so I can't replace them. Tried changing all the settings etc. Anything else I should look at? |

Swap which? |
I wouldn't be surprised if it's dirt affecting the floppy drive (hell, I found the thing in a dumpster ), but I've taken it out, cleaned it and its port out really quick with compressed air, and re-inserted it a few times. (And I don't see how it would stop the CD from spinning. Jam it maybe, but I can spin it on my own, even inside the drive thanks to the missing front panel. )

What's the weirdest thing you've ever played a video game on or seen one played on? I played Pong on a calculator once (programmed it too - you can play that game on ANYTHING with an LCD display ), and I've even heard of it being played on big apartment buildings at night, using lamps in the windows as pixels. |

Are they actually supposed to turn into empty patches where I can plant others, though? I thought the patch prevented that? |

I almost have the graphics decompression working. I've managed to decompress all but 18 tiles out of the second tileset. The graphics appear to be split into 3 compressed sections. The first two are fine (at 0x19A06 and 0x19E07), but the third (at 0x19EEA) has both header bytes set to 0! Is there some special way to handle this? If I just exit I end up missing 18 tiles, if I continue anyway I never find an 'End of data' marker (header with first byte = 0xFF). 2 bytes before this is what looks like a valid header but the size is only 254 bytes; 18 tiles should be 288 (0x120) bytes. (None of the tiles are actually compressed - that is, they all use mode 0 and you can see them in TLP.) |
This is what I'm using to get the size/compression mode: Get #nFileNum, L, A If A = 255 Then Exit Do Get #nFileNum, L + 1, B Size = CInt(B) + CInt((256 * (A And 3))) L = L + 2 Mode = (A And 28) \ 4 It's confusing because the first two work fine, and the ROM appears to be good. (The graphics all load properly.)

Ugh. This is Google's #2 problem. I've seen quite a few that aren't just lists of words, but actually lists of links all leading to the same page but with different URLs. They're getting smarter, too... Some are actually making lists that look like real sentences. Instead of something like "n64 gamecube ps2 xbox rom gba roms" they say things like "the n64 roms for ps2 are the gba xbox"... things that still make no sense, but look like they do at first glance. The links are also interesting and they make me wonder if it's just a few people doing it... They come up with stuff like "www.download-free-games.com/discount-viagra.htm", and other links that would look legitimate if not that the page's name has NOTHING to do with the site's. (And on EVERY one of them, each word is separated by a dash like that. ) |
I think if nothing else, Google needs to have a system where you sign up or something and have a list of pages to filter from search results, with easy 'block' links next to each results. (Experts-exchange.com needs to die. ) But, still - the number one problem with Google is that its image search needs to check if the image actually [insert swear word here] exists! I am SO sick of finding just the right picture only to click it and get a 404 page!

Is this ever going to be fixed, or should I just remove those status pics from my start page? (Please say it will. Those are cool. |

Oh, God... |
1) Only one PCI slot? Blech. You really should have a good few of those. 2) Celeron = that brown stuff that frequently floats in toilets. 3) No floppy drive? WTF? 4) Integrated video, especially Intel, r teh sux0r. 5) You're probably gonna want around 60-80GB if you spend a decent amount of time on the computer. 6) XP Home is crap. I suggest either XP Pro, 98, or Linux of some sort. 7) Hey, I can count to 7! Believe me, I have one a lot like that. It's quite sucky.

Well, it's Windows. Nuff said. |
Seriously, I don't like the looks of it at all. 3D windows is a cool idea but realistically it's a horrible waste of resources. The only thing I did like about it, the database file system, is apparently not going to happen. (And I really wouldn't want to have all my files sorted for me. It'd be aweseome, though, if each file was 'tagged' with its origin (including, if you downloaded it from ANY web browser, the web site/URL it came from) and a short description/subject entered by the user, which would make them easy to find. Just type in say "ASM" and you get 'asm.txt', 'marioworld.txt' whose description is 'overworld data, asm, music', and '65816.zip' which was downloaded from 'www.website.com/asm/65816.zip'.) *looks at screenshots* OK that huge analog clock is just a dumb idea. I'd rather not take up 1/8 of my screen space for a bar just to fit on a giant clock. '02:06 PM' on the bottom of the taskbar works fine. 64MB VRAM required? I've seen huge games that could run under that. There's just no reason for an OS to use that much. Parental controls? Ouch. I'd almost be sick, if not for the fact that this is M$ we're talking about. (Watch, it'll be a popup box. "You're not supposed to be looking at this site. Would you like to close it? Yes/No" )

Yeah, the drives broke and they didn't bother fixing it because it's way outdated. |
