@knuck: oryniders hack sucks... because... I don't know why. Even if he were a friend of mine (he isn't, though). This hack just sucks. It's terrible. Like the work of a two years old child who doesn't even know what exactly happens if he presses Ctrl+I, clicks on "Internet Explorer", goes to Acmlm's board and posts a random file from the "Recent Documents" list as "the best levels". And, if you ask me, orynider is the one on this board who definitively deserves the next ban. He should've been banned already at the point where he tried to fool the whole community with hoaxed screenshots of a non-existing SPC editor.
Sorry for flaming, once again

I request an author code; I have picked up the desert world job (which seemed to be vacant, from the first post) and am more or less ready for a release:

What do you think of this?

Have fun,

@Smallhacker-
MODs = possible, but lots of programming amount and heavy limitations. (compress the samples with BRR, adapting the tone frequency, 8 channels limit, ...)
MIDIs = nearly impossible, MIDIs are aligned very different on the one hand (MIDI ticks, events) and on the other, you'd have to convert the software/hardware wavetable.

@Atma X: You can turn on global echo, I believe, for making it work for sound effects too.

@MajinBlueDragon: So you know the >F0 commands? Could you find out for me? I'm especially curious about F4 (LoZ 3's "Transpose" doesn't fit at all).

I'm coming close to a release. The only thing left to do is making this program "idiot-proof", that means, you can easily thrash your ROM at the current state or make the SPC block unreadable if you don't know what you're doing.

I think a bad hack is not defined by glitches and all stuff like that... If the level design is good (and there are far too few hacks out there whose actually is) and you still can see the level more or less (Kyouji's "Hall of l33t h4x0rz" world well proved how the opposite should look) a hack can be even fun if it looks like Wario's (or even worse). On the other hand, many hacks are worth playing just because of the graphics even when the level design is unspeakable crap. If none of these two conditions is fulfilled, if you have a hack with tasteless palettes, stupidly hard levels that just cry for cheats if you want to go on (like jumping on diagonal ledges on the last row of the level, which, as anyone knows, can't be really seen) and crappy ExGFX or none at all, if there is no system in the levels, then you have a really worthless/bad/whatsoever hack. And all of these conditions, I believe, meet together in DwORY.
And yes, on the old board there was someone with "Yoshi" in his nick (Golden Yoshi, probably, but I can't remember anymore ). He made a bad hack for purpose ("SMW-") and it was real fun because ... well, hard to say. Although he used up all the things that made the hack bad using the classic definition, somehow it just fit together.

Ack OMG!
Don't call this a "board full of morons". It is stupid to presume that all in here are alike Kyouji (who already was such a ... ok, I hold my horses ^^ ... on the old board). Your hack was good. It certainly wasn't the best out there, but still, it was not bad. There's no reason to go havoc on the whole community only 'cause a few ones out there are bashing your hack for no reason (actually, I know of no hack Kyouji K. hasn't bashed yet ).

@Mods, Admins and any other higher forms of life: Don't ban him! Bans are thought as a punishment to someone, aren't they? But, if he wants to become banned, banning is no punishment to him. So, keep away from the magic button... and make him a custom title containing "Not banned, despite the request". That's the only thing he deserves for ^ this.

@knuck: Add SPCs? omg wtf - you can't add SPCs. You can take an SPC dump, extract an N-SPC song out of it and insert it into a game's SPC block - overwriting another song. Anything else would be a senseless amount of work.

@Atma X: Yes. I just mean, there are lots of hidden limitations etc. which could easily cause a heavy crash with a hardly findable reason.

I finished the tone properties dialog (and its functions, too, of course) and expanded the track properties with the vibrato data.

There's also a new custom SPC taking advantage of the added features (although it's not that new, rather an improved version of the previous one)
http://k-schale.50free.net/my0wn-th1rd.spc

Again some steps closer to a release.

Have fun,
Blacky.

Hm...

(1) I believe this topic would be more fitting into the newbie board.
(2) I believe Lunar Magic is more or less self-explaining.
(3) Welcome.
(4) You'd better get an SMW ROM first (if you don't have already). PM me if you want one.

Another weird (and probably leakish) fact is that there's some sort of debug info inside.
The german stuff inside is glitchy (if you can say this of a text ^^) well, I'll try to translate it:

Hi folks,

I recently started working on SMW: A Link to the Past again, and threw over some of the old ASM blocks, giving it a different look and making the whole thing a bit more stable (I had to sacrifice my HDMA palette changing routine, the SMW engine just doesn't like such frequent palette changes )
So here's some particular stuff:

I exchanged the PPU setup for the darker parts of Lunar Fortress completely, so now all of the sprites are affected. Looks way better, for me.

Took me some time to expand the levels to a serious length and make them worth playing (Demo 1 was more like a technical show-off ). Anyway, here you see a nice YI rip (palette isn't ripped, though )along with some custom GFX (the stone blocks, for instance). No, the Goomba didn't start down there.

So who said ExGFX have to change everything?

@cpubasic13: Try foobar2000 http://www.foobar2000.org/. This is the one I use (and the only stable one which has good quality, for me).

@Atma X: Very near to release. I'm just looking up some more song pointer tables and try to understand why the player loads only few tracks correctly (including the water level and sky theme, as well as the "doomship" theme from SMB3). (Maybe there are some commands not know to my program) Some don't load at all (crash), others load only on half of the tracks (like the SMB3 underground music; the funny thing about this one is that it only loads a submelody which is equivalent to SMRPG's variant of it, means, going down instead up at the end of a melody phrase).

@cpubasic13, again: Do you want to tell that you would shut down the music if it is imported from another game? Doh. I wanted to import some neat SMRPG stuff into SMW: ALTTP

@Coby: Yes, it is. That's the point of the PPU overhaul.
@Kirby: Whoops... you see, I don't have yet totally fixed the palette in the last shot, and a little red-green distinction fault
@cpubasic13: What do you have against the palette?

I too. I wasn't thinking of LoZ3, for me, that game has generally crappy music... SMRPG recently succeeded Chrono Trigger along with FFV/FFVI as my favourite game soundtrack and it has so far the best Bowser's castle soundtrack I've heard.
(Weapons factory and barrel volcano themes also rule , but at least the first one is not at all mario-ish; "fighting a weapon monster" theme would fit for good old Reznor, I believe)

Ah yes. Sorry, I interpreted it like "I like the fact you ripped the graphics, but I don't like the palette". My fault.

@all, I'm just trying to insert some 3D background GFX I once rendered for an early DirectX project of mine (which had 100% mario-ish graphics, but was starring a duck (the idea was stolen, actually ^^)). If I find a program which can convert bitmaps to SNES format properly (without reducing the palette to 4 colours ) and find some time (have to finish a poster about the "west side story" musical for tomorrow ) I'll be able to post a few screenshots during the next, say, two hours.

Have fun,
Blacky.

It's a bit too short yet... when my "song partitioner" works, I thrash useless commands from the BGM track and the fifth (unused) track in order to free up some more space for the melody.

Here's the first screenshot of the pre-rendered 3D background (I'm not ready with Map16 mapping yet, so the tiles of the hills' bottoms don't yet fit together exactly):

What do you think of these? (darker background hills will be added too.)

@Kitten Yiffer: I am just too lazy to turn off my "Kreed's SuperEagle mode" filter. That's the one I use for playing, too.

@HyperHacker: I'm not yet exactly ready with the palette on that screenshot, I imported the YI cave background when I still was new to SMW hacking and mapped the colours to palette 0, thus colliding with the 4 colour palettes of the L3 tiles.

@Slash Dafter: bitchin'? excuse the question, but I'm quite new to anglo-american colloquial speech... is that positive or negative?

Well yes, here are some screenshots from the game I took the BG from (it was my very first larger DirectX project, as well as my first own platformer, and full of w00t True-Colour 32 bit ExGFX; it also has my w00t sound engine which plays SPCs (libopenspc), WAVs (DSound), MIDIs (WinMM) and MODs (FMOD) and has SPC700-like features)
- NO, THIS ISN'T AN SMW HACK -

Some level shots...

...and a part of a level BG (which is about three times wider in total).
So what do you think about inserting some more ExGFX from that game? (it would be some work, because the ingame tiles are 20x16 instead of 8x8)

Have fun,
Blacky.
