Name: Matvey (alias blackhole89)

Age: 15

Sex: male

Area of expertise: SMW hacking and ROM hacking in general; also C/C++ and assembler programming for x86 platforms, and just assembler for the 65c816 and Atmel AVR family microcontrollers. N-SPC, aka the music engine of most of the Nintendo-produced SNES games.

Skills: 65c816 assembler, graphics design, HTML, PHP, C, C++, x86 assembler, Windows API programming, DirectX stuff, file format hacking and some others that will stay unmentioned due to absolute non-relatedness to the position I am aiming for.

Highest Obtained power level: (here) Administrator, but that was done through making use of a security leak... does that count? It lasted about half an hour, then I managed to contact Acmlm and inform him, thus getting demoted in exchange for titleoption=1. If not, normal user. (elsewhere) Administrator, Co-owner, and a normal user several times.

Forum(s) to Moderate and why : SMW and ROM hacking, because both of them really need moderation. None of the boards at Acmlm's get flooded by asshats and spammers as frequently as these two. Also, I believe I can give good answers on many indepth questions coming up (especially the ones concerning SNES music, as this is my main area of qualification) and know to set priorities on what is actually important (=> the whole thing with too many stickies being up there, etc.).

Recommendations: Emuz, peter_ac, Juggling Joker, knuck, Smallhacker

The main reason why I want to do moderation on these two boards is that I somehow want to contribute. I mean, this board is absolutely unique when it comes to response time and the amount of actually useful information you receive upon posting a question. (If you know the eAthena (an RO server) support board, you understand what I am speaking of) I still remember how this wasn't a that well known place yet (with popularity, sadly, the amount of newly joining flamers increased as well) and how the discussions led in the romhacking related sections were actually niveauful ones. I think it is possible to raise the quality of discussion altogether by just keeping the amount of threads on the same topic under control and consequently react on board etiquette and FAQ violations, whereas consequently doesn't mean we should permaban any newbie who didn't act by the FAQ.
Also, I believe I have quite good understanding of ROM hacking and a more or less good reputation among the hacking community.
Another advantage of having me as a moderator is the circumstance that I am resident in a different time zone than most, if not all, of the staff members (GMT+1, or +2 in daylight savings time) and therefore can react on FAQ violations, flaming or whatever else requires moderation at times no or few other staff members are online.

Regards,
~blackhole89.

'tis a ROM link. ROM links are evil.

Please post your hacks only in IPS format (create them using Lunar IPS from Fu's site). Otherwise Acmlm might get into trouble with the NSA and the Secret Service, you know. xD

As far as I played it now, it is quite good and could easily be considered an upper-class SMW-hack (that applies for very few of them nowadays...)

positive:
- awesome FG graphics. I like your style.
- nice gameplay and level design.
- neat sprite replacements.
- more or less interesting plot, from what I understood (my Spanish is awful)

negative:
- original SMW levels still recognizable in places (i.e. almost unchanged passages)
- some BGs suck (e.g. the weird hill top spheres)

Is the boss testing room above Yoshi's House intensional? It seems rather weird to have this in a completed hack...

First off, SMW does not use HDMA on layer three "out of the box", afaik. Secondly, this could easily be done and I even already considered doing the things you mentioned on my hack. Yet, I didn't bother to actually do it because I dislike how water behaves in SMW and hence don't want any tides in my hack.
When actually taking your time for it, it won't take up more than 15 minutes to code this (probably even less). The only problem I am currently having which stops me from helping you with that is my compie currently being broken (attempted to insert a new processor... it was already broken, and as a result my old processor was burninated and my BIOS was drained, so, ... ) and me not having access to my SMW hacking equipment.

Overworld: Plain average. Looks ok in places, but is way too square in others. Also, the perspective is somewhat broken now and then.
Level design: Eek. It somehow looks like all of your levels only consist out of two objects (green ledges and pipes). There is neither detail nor twist about them, and the castle in the beginning also consisted out of one single square room.
Music: Does not fit in places. Get lost from my castle, outdoor melodies.
Graphics: The few ExGFX you have look good, but they are hardly anything special.
Palettes: Nice Mario palette. On the rest, there's hardly anything I could say at all.

Overall rating: I'll better spare you this.

Although this hack is hardly above average, I still see you do have a considerable amount of taste (Unlike in the other newbie hacks, this one had no disgusting palettes, levels, graphics whatsoever at it.) in hacking. I recommend you to do more non-public experiments, play the already released hacks and demos on this board (good ones and also some bad ones, the latter will help you find out what you should not do) and start making a new hack afterwards.

SNES9x's savestates use some gzip-like compression. That's why they are all different in size and significantly smaller than ZSNES's or the SNES' RAM range.

[edit] It is zlib.

Awesome. I'll probably consider doing the same thing for my hack for it not to be behind.

One question though... what is that brownish thing in the background of the latter two pics?

HOST'd.

MIRROR 1: *read below* (crappy upstream, uptime not guaranteed)
MIRROR 2: *read below* (nice upstream, up 24/7, but limited transfers, so save this one as long as #1 is up)

[edit] Added a mirror.
[edit2] Ah... wait... your IPS is all fucked up. Send a working ROM with it to me so I can create the IPS for you, as that seems to be the better solution.
Edited out the mirrors again. Do not use, it is senseless anyway.

First off, if you have a program that does everything for you, that can't be considered "hacking" anymore. If you want to hack, you should be able to get along without a program created by somebody else. What you mean is called "editing".
Besides, Terranigma (which is the only of the three I tried to mess around with) does not use a linear map format (i.e. uncompressed) so it will probably be not quite simple to write an editor for it.

Sorry, but in the ROM hacking "scene" JAP is commonly used as an abbrievation for Japanese (the language), not their TV format (which is SECAM, which in its turn is quite close to the European PAL). JAP -> NTSC did sound like nonsense, after all.
Try using Google on with SECAM or PAL as a keyword (instead of JAP).

This sounds fairly interesting.

Code readers:
- understand SNES asm
- understand C at a low level (We will be looking at the code in asm, but it was originally written in C and then compiled ... so it looks kinda weird unless you understand C at a low level.)
- goals are to figure out software protocals and hardware features so that we can make this puppy do whatever we want

I may help you. PM me if you want to know something particular, or have a ROM image which I can analyze.

Would you believe I thought knuck was a girl for, like, a very very long time? (At some point, someone in IRC corrected me (it was Bouche, if I remember it right) when I mentioned him as "she"). He... uh... has a very feminine way of talking.
As for you... yeah. I had no doubts about your gender ever since I first saw a post of yours. ~

I am a socialist and, even more, a liberal. I mainly hate the US political system because those religious TV guys have way too much influence. I like using Linux now and then, but there are way too few ROM hacking tools for it.
Also, this guide has a lot of truth about it.
