Tip 131 :: Plan out your levels on paper before you open up Lunar Magic and start editing.

I used to design crappy levels in every game I edited, whether it was using the Warcraft III World Editor, Lunar Magic or even Graal Online, back in the day. Why? Because I'd open the editor, try to place a few tiles and either get flustered by the sheer size of what I was attempting to do, or be dissatisfied with what I ended up with, and re-do little parts a thousand times, which was highly unproductive.

But ever since I started designing my levels on paper, things have become a lot easier. You've already designed the level, so when you sit down to the editor, you're simply making your idea into reality, using the drawing as a template. You don't need artistic skills, I know I have none. Just crudely drawn lines giving a basic idea of how the level looks.

In the first Overworld Editing question, you address changing events. You say...
"To create new ones, you have to open the Layer 2 Event Tile Selector, scroll to page 8 and you will see the tiles for the events."
What do you mean by "scroll to page 8?" This is what I'm looking at...

See; the window is empty except for a few land formations. And despite having the window highlighted, if I try something like Page Up or Page Down, it does so in the Overworld Editor in the background there.

Any help?

Wouldn't "Soopa Koopa" have been more apropriate, and less confusing?

WTF. That didn't work the last time I tried it, I swear. Somebody's trying to make a fool of me.
*shakes fist menacingly at the sky*

Okay, new problem. I can't copy from the window to the actual map. Ctrl+C does nothing, right clicking and left clicking do nothing. The path that's already on the map can be copied by right clicking and dragging, but other than that, I can't paste from the clipboard.

I'm on the overworld editor and I've finally gotten a hang of setting up Mario's pathes, and rearranging the graphics. A few issues have arisen. I'll put numbers next to each question, so you can reference which one you'll be answering for me, without having to quote the whole post.

In the normal SMW, Mario starts in a sub-world-map, Yoshi's Island. I've seen other hacks start on the main world map. (1) How do I go about dictating where Mario starts, and furthermore, (2) how do I dictate the boundries of the world map? What I mean is, as I'm building my world map, how do I differentiate between the world map, and sub-maps? Or can I only use what they've given me (i.e. one big overworld and six little sub maps)? Lastly, on the overworld editor, there are four grayed-out buttons.

That's what I originally tried. Well, I still can't copy from that clipboard, but fortunately, when I'm in Layer2 8x8 Editor Mode, I can copy from that area to the right of the bottom right of the world map. You know, it's surrounded by gray x's on a blue background. This should serve my purposes, for now, but I'd still feel better if I could just copy from that darned clipboard. I even tried shift and alt clicking, besides just ctrl, and I've tried both left and right clicking. Nothing. Oh well.

Ahh, thanks a bunch! I think I can actually start to seriously edit. I've just been fooling around in the level editor so far. Another question, now. I'm in the Exit Level Tile Settings. How do I add and delete exits? Or can't I? Because the dialouge box only asks which exit index I wanna use and where I wanna exit to. There's no apparent way to add or delete exit indexes.

I'm going to assume they can't be added or subtracted (short of ASM), feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, I know how to use them, just wondered if I could add and delete them. Thanks.

Greetings. I thought I'd post in the newbie forum and introduce my presence, since I'm going to be using these boards. You'll mostly find me in the SMW hack forum, as I desire information in vast quantities, and that place provides some. I work on things like ROM hacks because I would like to design games professionally. I do so at present time, but at an amateur level, for my own amusement.

I'll probably poke around the various social boards, if I think I can add something constructive to an existing debate. I won't divulge anything about myself that relates to the pure material world. Aspects such as age, race, gender, these are irrelevant. All you can see is text on a screen; a consciousness devoid of a body. I like it that way.

Please feel free to send me a personal message if you find anything I do or say to be galling. I have read the forum FAQ in it's entirety, but as I am new around here, there are sure to be things not contined within it, unwritten rules as it were, that I may not be aware of. Such as the color of my font; I foreseeably plan to use it in all my posts. I adore the color, but would abandon it here if it's a problem. That is all.

I don't think it's audacious to speak intelligently if, at the same time, I treat people respectfully and kindly. "Smart assholes," irk me as much as the next person, but here's the secret; most people who contrive wit are insincere in the first place, regardeless of whether or not they've got a thesaurus on hand at all times.

By the way, a newbie question; why are everyone's number of posts listed as x/y? Like ten of ten posts, or in your case, 3036/3036. I could assume one is total posts ever made, and the other is active posts, but I'd better ask just to be sure. I specifically asked because I saw someone with around 60000/2000, throwing the idea of a ratio out the window.

What do you think about this? Lavander on black; simple, unobtrusive. The same color scheme as my website.

My website should be much bigger than it is. Unfortunately, I am procrastinative. On top of that, I disdain the summer months. The hot weather and bright sunshine make me lethargic; I lounge around doing much of nothing, like a cat caught in a beam of sunshine. Thankfully, I am mostly nocturnal. I hope to add more Drama soon, and get the Forms section started.
