What happened to...er...Wirtual Man?

Those screens are incredibly, painfully boring. An empty vomit-green background, drab gray ground, a few purple triangles, and a flat-shaded circle with a dot that vaguely resembles Pac-Man. I think I'm going to go sleep now.

Seriously, put a little lot more effort into your hacks, and try to work on only one at a time. Nobody wants to play an uninspired, rushed hack.

To fix the top of the screen, find a blank space in your ROM, and add the following:

FC xx (repeated 16 times)

where xx corresponds to the 4-color palette you want the tiles to use:

28 = palette 2
2C = palette 3
38 = palette 6
3C = palette 7

Now, go to $F90 in your ROM:

01 18 81 8C 00 08 00

That's the DMA parameter table for the top of the item box, which is now covered up by the level name. 81 8C 00 is the 24-bit SNES address of the tile data to be copied; change that to point to the beginning of the new tiles you just inserted. 08 00 is the number of bytes to copy; change it to 20 00 (32 bytes). Now, go to $F05 (2E), and change it to 28; this is the VRAM address the tiles will be copied to. Go ahead and save your changes. If you did everything correctly, the level name should be one contiguous color.

As for the time bonus...ooh, yikes. I'll have to investigate that one.

Sorry to keep derailing your topic, Kailieann, I just need to clear this up.

Last night kinda pushed me over the edge. I already wasn't in a very good mood, and then I came in here to see (surprise surprise) thirteen topics in a row with lame, pointless replies from some stupid n00b. Now, see, I have a very hard time tolerating stupidity, and last night, all that pent-up anger just exploded. I was THIS CLOSE to banning a bunch of people with my new-found power (granted by a certain someone) and leaving this board forever. Hence the creation of Lunar Utopia.

So...I guess I'm not leaving just yet, but I AM leaving Lunar Utopia open. I don't care if I ever have the crazy huge number of users this board has--that's not what I want (half of said users should've been banned or disciplined in SOME way a long time ago). I just want it to be a place where intelligent, resourceful SMW hackers who are willing to do/learn whatever it takes to make a really good hack (mostly the ones who left shortly after the old board died) can chill out, share notes, and help each other without a constant influx of "HOW DO I CAHNGE TEH OVREWROLD MAPZ?!?!!?!?!" interrupting things and killing the mood. Think of it as "SMW Hacking Advanced," if you will, or a bike without training wheels.

OK, first off, you need to know that SMW actually uses two RAM addresses for its button flags: $15 and $17 ($16 and $18 store the same flags, but for only one frame). $17 holds the status of the L, R, A, and X buttons on the SNES controller:



The problem with SMW is that, for some reason, it doesn't differentiate between A and B + A. B = 80 00, A = 80 80, and B + A = 80 80 (normally A = 00 80). Basically, this means that unless you require the player to press NOTHING but B + Right (LDA $15, XBA, LDA $17, REP #$20, CMP #$8100), both A and B are going to trigger it.

Anyway, if you don't mind either A or B triggering the code, then it should look like so:

A5 17 29 81 C9 81 D0 05 A9 63 8D BF 0D 60

LDA $17 ; load controller flags
AND #$81 ; isolate right and A/B flags
CMP #$81 ; are right and A/B both pressed?
BNE #$05 ; if not, branch to end
LDA #$63 ; load 99 coins
STA $0DBF ; store to coin counter
RTS ; end

(notice I eliminated the redundant RTS by branching to the end of the routine...not required, just good form)

That SHOULD work just fine. I don't know why it would only activate on the right side of the block...did you double-check your offsets in Block Tool? (Above, Below, and Sides should all be set to zero)
