Gee, I dunno, maybe because one doesn't exist?

Seriously, very few games have their own graphics decompressor, and universal decompressors aren't really feasible because there are so many different compression formats out there (though it'd be nice to see one that uses plugins for its decompression routines, so it can be frequently updated). Generally, a decompressor only comes about when demand for a hack of x game is high, or someone who's a fan of x game gets really, really bored.

What's really strange is that each movie focuses on the opposite character ("Willy Wonka" on Charlie, and "Charlie" on Wonka)...though I haven't seen the new one, I'm just going by a review I read.

Heh. That triangle wouldn't work right in ANY emulator, since it doesn't have the proper tile underneath it.

Try jumping right before you hit it, that might work...

The SNES only has so much VBlank time (as I've found out the hard way), and animating tiles takes up a lot of it. You're going to have to get rid of some animations, nothing else you can do about it.

Uh...if I'm not mistaken, there are FIVE different background palettes in that picture (four levels of blue, plus the grey doorways). The NES is only capable of four. Mind explaining how you did that?

Posted on 07-20-05 01:25 PM, in PC freezes completely on sound play? Link
I believe it's more of a hardware issue than a driver issue. I had the same problem with my Sound Blaster PCI512, though it would lock up if I so much as opened a program that used DirectSound (it didn't even have to play anything). Apparently, if you have a VIA chipset, you're almost guaranteed to have this problem.

I recently upgraded to an Audigy 2, and while a few programs (such as Cave Story) still don't run properly unless I turn down the acceleration, I rarely experience lockups anymore. Whether they fixed the hardware or merely "patched it" via the driver, I'm not certain, though I do know it's far more stable under Windows 2000 than 98SE.

omigawd.

If you ever want some help with the graphics (not implying that yours are bad, I just love graphics hacking), just let me know. I'm particularly fond of designing title screens...

Posted on 07-20-05 02:08 PM, in Horizontal scroll: variable, Vertical scroll: none without ASM Link
There's a much simpler way to do this:

1. Go to $2D928 in the ROM.
2. Change the 00 to 02.

This will change the second "None/None" scrolling option (right below "None/Constant") to "Variable/None". It works, I use it in my own hack.

In case you want to experiment with other scrolling combinations, here's the format of the table. It starts at $2D910, and is comprised of 32 bytes. The first 16 bytes are the V-Scroll options, and the second 16 bytes are the H-Scroll options; 00=none, 01=constant, 02=variable, 03=slow (if I recall correctly, "slow" only works for V-Scroll). Fortunately, LM reads this table from the ROM, and thus you can verify your changes by simply reloading your ROM and opening the "Change Other Properties..." dialog.

Hey, how about giving credit where credit is due? Some of those hacks weren't very easy to make, and the site makes it look like you created them all.

Also, some of those (particularly the fastrom patch) require a weeeeeeee bit more explanation than you currently have on that page. And which version of my fadeout patch do you have there, the one that fades colors 8-F, or the one that skips them? And what do you mean it "doesn't work?"

At the very least, put links to each patch's associated thread, so people know who made them, and how they're supposed to be used. You're only asking for trouble when you group them all together willy-nilly like that.

Posted on 07-20-05 03:28 PM, in Any good ideas for a level? Link
When did this topic become a "do's and don'ts" list for hacks?

32. A "two-sided" level. Basically, you would have 2 different versions of the same level, connected by doors or pipes. One version would have different traps and enemies than the other, and you'd have to switch between the two "worlds" to get past certain traps.

A couple of themes for this idea:

- "Fire" and "ice" versions of the level. In the ice level, the lava has frozen over, but huge icicles and ice spikes block Mario's progress; in the fire level, the icicles and spikes have melted, but so has the lava. (I sort of did this in SMO, in the "Cooling Systems" level.)

- "Swappable" BG/FG. Basically, you make a level using both layers 1 and 2, but turn layer 2 interaction off. Now, copy the level and move all the layer 1 objects to layer 2, and vice versa. The player now has to "swap" the background layers (via pipes, doors, or a custom exit block) in order to progress through the level. You could make some really interesting puzzles this way.

Uh, there's only one NES Kirby game, and the levels are compressed. You probably won't get too far.

If you really have nothing to do, why not try to learn 6502 ASM, and how to use a tracer?
