To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what the "inverse" of the size is. It could either be the bitwise inverse (in which case you'd flip every bit: 1 becomes 0, 0 becomes 1, etc.), or it could be the maximum size, 0x10000, minus the size (and then minus one, in keeping with the format). In any case, the inverse size is probably there just as a check to ensure that this is indeed a RATS tag.

Remember to terminate your RATS sequence with an FF, and good luck!
Just subtract the final size, minus 1, from 0xFFFF. That's your inverse.

Example:
Data is 378 bytes, or 0x17A hex.
0x17A - 1 = 0x179, little endian = 79 01 (size-1)
0xFFFF - 0x179 = 0xFE86, little endian = 86 FE (inverse of size-1)

Simply add the size and the inverse together when you're done. If they equal FFFF, congrats!

Also, there's no need to terminate a RATS tag with 0xFF...

Agreed. Make the cake in the background a few shades darker, and you'll have yourself one hum-dinger of a cake cave.

*shot for using old-people-isms*

Ooh! And how about some frosting dripping from the ceiling? Frosting stalactites...

OMG, Tarale...aside from the button placement, one of your cases is identical to mine.

These pics are kinda old, taken before I cleaned up and rearranged a bit, but they'll suffice.

Okay, now I don't feel so bad about the way my desk used to look. Egads.

Current desktop photo fun time! Please stay behind the ragged rope curtain as you peruse the exhibit.

Clockwise from top:

1) Pile of assorted toys and doo-dads. The menacing thing on the left is called a "Helping Hand" (sold at Radio Shack). It has clamps to hold wires, PCBs, and other electronic components in place while you solder or do other intricate work. I love it. <3

2) Leaning Tower of CDs (and also Nerds). Directly to the left is a compressed gas duster and my routers. In front is one of my old Labtec speakers, which helps to provide surround sound.

3) Silver Eclipse. She lights up blue at night.

4) Blobby and the shell of an old boombox. The speakers were hacked out and screwed to the back of my desk (either side behind the monitor), while all the equalizer controls remained conveniently located on top of the box. This provides somewhat crappy pseudo-surround sound.

5) Flatbed scanner. Rarely used.

6) What's that smell?

7) Two subwoofers and a mess of power cords. A 4-port KVM switch is also down here (3 computers + one Dreamcast VGA box).

8) Microchip.

9) Assorted crap. Floppy disks, ROM hacking notes, a magazine, my next car payment, and a prototype Famicom cartridge. The container on the left holds pistachios.

10) What remains of my "corner of tranquility." That green thing is a miniature fountain. To the left (outside the frame) are a model lighthouse and neat Wyland whale sculpture. The flashlight and bottle of rubbing alcohol add a touch of...uh...clutter.

11) Shelves of Crap.

And yet, the SMB2 versions sound so much better.

Are you sure Nintendo used FDS channels in DDP's music? I thought they were only used for sound effects...

Why not? Aside from DVI, that's the best way to hook up a video card to a TV (few video cards and even fewer TVs [affordable ones, anyway] have DVI capability right now). There's also composite (the yellow RCA cable), but that'll only give you even worse color resolution.

Posted on 06-29-05 03:01 PM, in Would ROM Hacks Work On the Real Deal? Link
I have a Legend of the Blob Bros. 2 cartridge that works 100% properly on a real NES. However, that hack has only a few very small ASM modifications, as I was just learning it at the time.

SMO, on the other hand...bleh. I'd like to find out exactly what part of my code causes it to crash a real SNES (little help, d4s? blackhole?). I kinda doubt it's the palette-based ASM code, since I'm pretty sure I placed it outside the NMI routines. The HDMA code, on the other hand...that could very well be an issue. Being the SNES n00b that I am, I think I stuck that in NMI because its previous location was causing glitches whenever the game slowed down. Do some of Fu's hacks (animated tiles and whatnot) run during VBlank as well?

DUDE. ALL my rockets and firecrackers were confiscated. I had hundreds of Dixie Whistlers left over from last year, as well as a giant WARLORD pack of larger rockets, and now they're all GONE. Apparently, rockets and firecrackers were illegal where I went this year (nobody said a THING about it), while literally everything else that shot up in the sky or made a loud BANG was legal. WTF?

I can see them now, all laid out on a table, while a bunch of cops and smelly elderly citizens stand around, grinning stupidly and applauding the "noble efforts of the Airway Heights P.D."

*BMF54123 gives Airway Heights, WA the finger and a hearty "f*ck off and die"

Talk about a mood killer...we just packed up and left right then and there. I'm totally going to Idaho next year.

Any time the computer locks up and has trouble restarting, or does anything out of the ordinary. If it so much as vibrates differently, or hums louder than usual, it's a sign of impending hard drive fKitten Yiffer.

Yes, I'm paranoid.

However, I think being a little paranoid is actually a good thing in the long run, as I've caught several problems before they developed into something serious. Vibrating/noisy fans and hard drives that are suddenly noticeably louder than usual or start clicking during activity are promptly replaced. I value my data too much to take any chances.

And I totally agree with Colleen re: the dreaded power fKitten Yiffer. It's especially bad when it quickly pulses on and off several times in a row. The power never dies cleanly around here...

Posted on 07-06-05 12:56 PM, in help w/ sprite placement for SMB2 Link
It's been a while, but I'm 100% sure this is how enemy data works.

Let's take the very first level, the vertical part of 1-1, which starts at $12708:

01 01 05 03 76 03 6C 01 01

Enemy data is stored in blocks, one for each page. The first byte defines the size of the block, including the size byte itself. A value of 01 indicates that no enemies are to be drawn for that page, so the first two 01s in the example skip two pages. The next block, starting with 05, contains two Shyguys (sprite ID 03) with screen locations of X:07/Y:06 and X:06/Y:0C. The last two 01s cover the last page of the level and the page past that (so enemies from the next area aren't inadvertently loaded). The next vertical area starts immediately after, at $12711. That's all there is to it!

Also, you're not calculating your pointers correctly, but that's totally understandable...they're a little weird. I had to figure them out all over again while writing this post. The first pointer table, starting at $12510, points to the pointer table for each full level's (1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc.) enemy data. It starts with 21 high bytes, followed by 21 low bytes (7 worlds * 3 levels = 21 pointers--yes, world 7 technically has 3 levels!). The first pointer is A5 54, which points to $12564. This is the start of the pointer table for 1-1: 10 high bytes, 10 low bytes (each level holds 10 areas). The first pointer here is A6 F8, which points to $12708--the first area, as detailed above.

That oughta cover everything. I hope I wasn't too confusing...

Ditto.

Unfortunately, the odd eating cycle seems to have finally taken its toll, as my doctor said my blood sugar was a little high (it should've been low, if anything, since I hadn't eaten for 12 hours). If it is indeed out of whack, it might explain why I feel so bad all the time.
