WOW. I must say, just by looking at the screenshots, I am very impressed. The levels have a very professional, "official" look to them. The generous use of appropriate background scenery helps a lot. The palettes look very nice as well...nothing eye-searing or terribly out of place (the pastel combination in Magictrick Land really caught my eye). And there's TONS of variety in the level design and enemy placement.

I hardly ever download NES hacks, but this one looks too good to pass up. Nice job.

Hmm. In Metroid-Common-Sprites.png, there's a little orange arrow. I don't recall ever seeing that in the game. There are a few other sprites (with incorrect patterns) that look to be unfinished/unused as well...

In entirely related news, I've decided to redo SMO's half-finished item system from scratch. Instead of cycling through a list of special items and manually activating one, you'll have a set of 4 "static" items that will either be used automatically (ex: the key will unlock one secret door when you touch it), or with the L and R buttons (ex: L will activate the POW block, which turns all on-screen enemies into coins). I've settled for 4 items because a) they fit nicely in the status bar, above the 4 Light Sphere indicators, and b) this project is dragging on waaaay too long, and I don't want to spend the time coding a bunch of items when I could be focusing on making new levels (I kind of forgot how the old system was coded anyway, since I stopped working on it for so long). Most of these new items should be fairly easy to implement.

Along with the 4 special items (not telling what the other two are ), the Item Shop will also sell common items, like Flowers and 1-ups, and can exchange S-coins for regular coins. However, these won't all be available in the beginning--you'll have to beat a few worlds before more items become available.

Yeah, I realize the shading on the house isn't the best. I'll probably rework it a bit, though I don't like the thought of using even more Map16 tiles (I've already used almost an entire page on the shop, both inside and outside combined). I have plenty of palette and 8x8 tile space to work with, but Map16 space is very limited. I have this terrible feeling I'm going to run out (or come pretty darned close), and I haven't even started working on World 3 yet.

If only background Map16 pages could be used for foreground objects...

Little bump there, HH?

Well, as long as this thread's back on page 1, I may as well submit a couple of bug reports...

- 65c816 emulation seems to be a bit too slow. I keep encountering serious slowdown in SMO where there is none in ZSNES or the official SNES9X. (H)DMA also seems to be affected, causing occasional Layer 3 flickering (i.e. when deleting save files).

- Frequently, breakpoints just don't want to trigger. They work fine right after opening the program and loading a ROM, but as soon as I reset the game or reload the ROM, they stop working (or work intermittently). I know they should be triggering because I can see the addresses being modified in the hex viewer.

Uh...okay. What elements would a POW block and a key represent?

Anyway...



I fixed the sides, added some curvature to the bottom of the "roof," and even though you can't really tell, I smoothed out the top a bit. Shading's still the same, obviously, though I think the extra curvature by itself improves the overall "flat" look. I'm going to leave it be for now and focus on other things; I'll probably touch it up more sometime later.

Now, on to the coding!

The springboard graphics aren't used for anything but the springboard. They remain unchanged throughout the entire game.

I also graduated in 1998 (CLASS OF'98 REPRAZENT! *high-fives Anya*). Sometimes I find myself longing for the simpler days of high school, but then I remember the homework, the tests, the jerks, the lack of money (cafeteria work only got me $50 a month), driver's ed, and all the other nasty stuff, and realize...well, I really don't have it much easier today.

I frequently have dreams (nightmares?) that I'm still in high school, and can't seem to remember my class schedule, or I realize that I haven't done any homework the entire semester. I think it stems from my deep-rooted (yet unattainable) desire to go back and improve my GPA. I still have to put that God-forsaken number on some job applications...

Oh, God, the locks.

I spent an entire night or two staring at FCEU's debugger, trying to figure out how the locks are handled, to no avail...just like you, I was able to move either the graphic or the attributes, but it would always either change back after the map screen reloaded, or f*ck up in some other aggravating way. Did Nintendo really NEED to make the code that complex?
