I'm not a big fan of the way Microsoft tries to reinvent the wheel with each new Windows release. They always have to rearrange the GUI, remove useful things in favor of useless things, make the code a few hundred MB bigger than the last version, force you to buy new hardware, break compatibility, and generally make you learn Windows again [almost] from scratch. All for the low, low upgrade price of $99 (and Microsoft wonders why piracy is running rampant!). I shouldn't find myself totally lost moving from 2000 -> XP (I don't have it, but I've worked on computers that do). All the stuff that they cram in there, in hopes of making the interface nauseatingly user-friendly, just ends up backfiring, and I spend 5 minutes trying to do something that previously could've been done in 5 seconds. And even then, it usually doesn't work. It's no wonder so many people nowadays are switching to Apple and not looking back (my brother included)... |

Originally posted by Bowser_kOh, yeah, that's totally it. SEGA, back in 1992, knew people would try to steal their graphics for use in crappy SMW hacks 10+ years later, so they wanted to make it as tough as possible. Shame on them! (Seriously, though, no. Large ROM chips were pretty expensive back then, so game designers had to use compression in order to fit everything into a smaller space. It's still used to this day, even moreso now that CPUs are fast enough to decompress data without a noticeable impact on gameplay. The GBA even has decompression routines built into its BIOS in order to speed things up.) (edited by BMF3PO on 05-10-05 10:40 PM) |

Strange, I've just recently started having similar problems, even though I don't burn discs very often at all. The drive just doesn't want to open unless I close down a few things first. Aside from that, it works fine. Could a recent Windows update be causing this problem, perhaps?

I guarantee you there's no spyware on that computer. I check it regularly, hardly ever install anything (other than Windows updates), and use Firefox. It's not my primary Internet-browsing computer anyway. Try again.

The SNES does not have hardware collision detection, so it must instead utilize the screen location of each sprite. There's usually a "box" of coordinates programmed to match each sprite's size (though in SMW's case, each box is probably 16x16, aside from special sprites like Rexes and Dino-Rhinos), and if one sprite's collision box enters another's, the game runs an appropriate routine (hurt Mario, flip sprite, power-up, etc.). |
For a good example of collision detection boxes, play Vectorman for the Genesis and press ABACAB while paused. The little lights that appear indicate where collision detection will occur.

It's called the "SMB Relocaverburator," possibly the worst name for a ROM hacking utility ever. |
And even if you do know what editor he's talking about, his initial question was FAR from "cut and dry." I had no idea what he was talking about until I read the whole thread a second time, very slowly. hamtaro, don't be afraid to be verbose when asking questions here. We won't bite you if you go over 20 words.

Name: Robert |
Age: 24 Sex: Male Area of expertise: NES and SNES ROM hacking, computer maintenance Skills: 6502/65816 ASM, graphics, a little HTML Highest obtained power level: Local mod of both ROM Hacking and SMW Hacking here at Acmlm's, and self-appointed admin at my own board. Was also appointed full mod at Shroomy's old AcmlmBoard right before it died, but I doubt that counts. Forum(s) to moderate and why: Both ROM and SMW Hacking forums. ROM hacking is my thang, I've been doing it for 8 years or so. Recommendations: Colleen, Elric, Yiffy Kitten, MathOnNapkins [awaiting response from Acmlm] I would like to continue moderating the two main hacking forums because: 1. I have a very good understanding of ROM hacking in general. As I stated before, I've been doing it for about 8 years. I am knowledgeable enough to [at least attempt to] answer most questions that pop up, or point people in the right direction. I've provided lots of info and even some ASM hacks to the community. To successfully moderate a ROM hacking board, experience in the subject matter is a must. 2. I believe I have a pretty good reputation amongst the members of both forums, mainly SMW Hacking. I don't get into fights with people. Though I do admit I haven't had as much time to do so lately, I like to help others out as much as I can. 3. I have an insatiable desire to keep order (online, not in real life...har ). Left unsupervised, both forums quickly fall into disarray (as evidenced when FuSoYa disappeared for a long while), as they are easily the most active areas of the board. I feel I've done a pretty good job of keeping order alongside my fellow local mods. Problems have been dealt with satisfactorily and in a timely manner. So...yeah. bmf4mod or something. ...ugh. Writing is really, really, really not my thing. I think I'll abruptly wrap up right here and update later if necessary. And the point of this thread is...? |
All you really need to hack SMW palettes is Lunar Magic (and maybe a hex editor for those hard-to-reach areas). And if you need a list to tell you that you need an SMW ROM and SNES emulator to hack SMW, you really shouldn't be here.

1. Fu hasn't released the source code, and probably doesn't plan to anytime soon (if ever). |
2. Hacking a compiled Windows executable is not as easy as you may think, and authors generally don't like unauthorized program modifications anyway. 3. Some of those modifications you suggested (more sprites/overworlds/music) would require a SIGNIFICANT amount of changes to the SMW engine, and might not even be possible, given the SNES's inherent hardware limitations (in this case, not enough available RAM). Thus, while not 100% impossible, updating LM would not be feasible. You may as well put the effort towards making another, separate tool.

You know, the vast majority of those questions are explained in-depth in the help file. You might also try reading some of the sticky threads, particularly this one. |
Read the help file, read the stickies, try some things in LM (experimenting on a copy of the SMW ROM isn't going to blow up your computer!), and once you've done that, come back here with more specific questions (some of the ones you posted suggest to me you didn't even try).

A "plugin" system might be OK, but directly integrating tools into LM is a BAD IDEA. You're just asking for trouble when you start cramming tons of unrelated code into one package. What if a tool needs to be updated, to fix bugs/add functionality/whatever? You'd have to wait for Fu to compile and release a new version, which obviously doesn't happen too often anymore. |
It's this "all-in-one" mentality that ruined perfectly good programs like ICQ. Too much crap stuffed into one package. All it does now is eat up half your resources and crash your system... |
