Yeah, and the grand prize winning entries get to appear in his SMB1 hack!

...seriously, though, if that's the "prize," I wouldn't really call this a "contest."

Durr, maybe because it's in JAPANESE?

I switched Firefox to Shift_JIS and it looks fine. According to the readme, the current version of the hack is 0.10, released on 2/28/04. Is that more recent than the last one posted here?

Because there are already nine other stickies up there?

Gimme some suggestions as to which ones I can remove, and I'll think about it...

Not sure how much of a difference it'll make, but try removing all the spaces from the filename and converting it to lowercase, then re-upload it. You should also consider putting future patches into ZIP files, since some browsers/servers like to interpret unknown file types as text.

peter_ac, this is hardly the place to be nagging smwedit about his signature. Last I checked, the topic was about SMWR.

Regardless of how many tiles I'm actually using, I always make my ExGFX files 4,096 bytes in size (128 tiles). You might want to try that and see if the problem persists.

No, you just have to do it right.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of hosts don't allow external file linking, which will cause all sorts of problems. You have to actually have a webpage on their server with a link to the file.

Ooohhhh...what program are you using to save the ExGFX file? It might *look* like it's only got 8 tiles, but I'm willing to bet it's actually much bigger than that, padded with blank tiles (the blank tiles are overwriting the beginning of the level with 00s, which in Map16 terms is a water tile). Check the file's properties and see how big it really is; anything 8,192 bytes or larger is going to cause problems. I believe YY-CHR has a tendency to save all 256 tiles currently displayed unless you open a "placeholder" file of the proper size, erase everything manually, and go from there. Try pasting your tiles over a GFX file extracted from the game, or one downloaded from the ExGFX Workshop (make sure it's 4,096 bytes), save that as an ExGFX file, and let us know what happens.

*sigh*

smwedit, if you do it for him, he'll never learn how to do it himself, and we'll see this same topic again and again. He needs to figure it out, as do a lot of other people here. It may not be easy, and it may take a while, but whoever said ROM hacking was supposed to be easy?

I wonder...how "hard-coded" are these paths, anyway? Is the data mixed with ASM code in fixed locations and thus difficult to change without code modifications (the "true" definition of hard-coded), or is it located in a small, easily-editable secondary table somewhere?

Not broken, the host just has some rather thorough hotlink protection. Copy & paste didn't work for me, either.

Just go to the site's file listing and download the archive from there: http://f22.aaa.livedoor.jp/~gocha/hack/ladv/.

CoolMario, I would seriously consider replacing the drive in question. More often than not, a drive that suddenly becomes unbootable is going bad and will corrupt itself again sooner or later (unless you did something that might have caused the problem, like reboot or power down while Windows was running).

I would recommend downloading a diagnostic suite from the manufacturer's website and letting that run a while. If it finds anything at all wrong, consider the drive as good as dead.
