The status bar uses the last 8 entries of palettes 0 and 1, except for entries 08, 0C, 18, and 1C (they're transparent when used on layer 3). This leaves you with 9 available colors per palette. (Actually, I don't think colors 0C-0F are used in the status bar at all, though they *might* be used elsewhere.) |

I know JJ and HH will do a smashingly good job in here. Listen to what they have to say or I'll break all ya's kneecaps, aight? As long as I'm here, I may as well announce that I'm going to be on hiatus for a while (see custom title). I'm kinda burned out on the whole ROM hacking thing in general, and need to take a break before I go crazy. I haven't even touched SMO since shortly after the last demo, which was obviously a very long time ago. I just don't have the desire to work on it. Hopefully a little break from this madhouse (kidding! ) will allow me to "recharge my batteries," so to speak. I realize a few of you have sent me hacking questions (usually ASM-related) via PM and e-mail, and I apologize for not answering them yet; I simply can't focus enough to give you coherent explanations right now. Perhaps by the time I return I'll have gained some of my "hacking mojo" back, and can give you the answers you're looking for. Peace. (edited by BMF54123 on 02-22-05 07:46 PM) |

Originally posted by Kitten YifferNo, that was actually a result of the technique programmers used to get higher-res text/graphics on the screen. The Apple IIc had a very limited (and strange) video system. I remember seeing that effect way back when, but didn't think much of it...I thought it was kinda pretty, though. All green n' purple n' orange... |

I've swapped boot drives more times than I can count. What I usually do (when the boot drive still works, that is) is install the new drive as primary slave, set up the partition(s) and make the first one active using FDISK, then FORMAT [drive]: /S, then boot into Windows and drag-n'-drop everything to the new drive via Explorer. However, I doubt the same method would work for XP...I've only done this with 98.

Is ClearType the default smoothing method in XP or something? Nearly all the XP screenshots I've ever seen use it, and it looks really bad to me. I couldn't stand having a colored fringe around all my fonts, even if they did look less pixellated. |

Well, then, you're screwed. I'm not aware of any free way to get your own domain name, which you HAVE to have if you want a fully customized e-mail address. |

I'm amazed by the ridiculously high fKitten Yiffer rate of a technology that's been around for so long--you'd think that it would've stabilized somewhat by now, via the introduction of new materials, sturdier drive mechanisms, and whatnot. But nooooooo, just last week I grabbed a few used floppies off my "pile o' stuff", hoping to make a Win98 boot disk, and ALL of them had failed in the same manner and could not be reformatted. How can they become physically damaged just by sitting in a stack on my desk? |
Floppies are also incredibly slow. My Athlon 2700+ slows to a crawl whenever I scan a disk, or when a disk has become unreadable (the drive just thrashes the heads around for a minute or so, trying to find readable data). I would imagine this is for compatibility reasons, but it's still incredibly annoying nonetheless, and shows just how ancient the technology behind even the newest, most expensive PC is...

Judging from the error message Windows gave you, and the fact that it locks up until you shut off the printer, it sounds like the printer's card reader might be going bad. Is it a USB or parallel port printer? Have you used the card reader without any problems before, or is this the first time you've used it? |

As I recall, the necessary function was turned on/installed a while ago, and everyone immediately proceeded to abuse it by posting their stats in a rather large thread (though I admit I, too, joined in near the end). The function was disabled shortly afterwards, so I can only assume that it chewed up too much CPU time on the server end. |
I don't know why Acmlm used images in the first place, as ordinary bold numbers would work just as well, and use less resources... (restricted) |

Originally posted by Vystrix NexothWell, I tried two different floppy drives on two different computers, with the same result. I think they all just mysteriously failed in the same manner. They were all different brands, though (they were old hardware driver disks that I had reformatted), so...jeez, I really don't know.

VOX ADPCM? That's the only name I can think of, since the version of GoldWave I have has an option to open such a format. Mind tossing one of the files my way, if it's not very big? |

Alright, guys, now you're just blatantly spamming. This thread outlived its usefulness a long time ago. SMO hasn't been updated since the last demo, and it won't be for a while. Please don't ask me when it'll be done, because I honestly don't know, and it's something I'd rather not think about right now. |
Thank you, and good night. *closes and disappears into the shadows* (restricted) | (restricted) |

What kind of video card is it? I just found out that ATI video drivers have a feature called "VPU recovery" that will essentially lock up the system and reset the video hardware if it overheats or otherwise malfunctions. However, this is supposed to generate an error message (which I'm assuming you don't get), and normally only happens during periods of high GPU usage (i.e. 3D games). |
You could also check your power management settings, make sure the monitor's not set to turn off after x minutes (that fixed the problem for someone on another forum). (restricted) | (restricted)
