Keep in mind that the Bowser battle used a totally different screen mode (in order to do the rotation effects). That right there could be a major reason why it doesn't work in regular levels.

This thread was not bumped just so you guys could start another argument about "stolen" graphics.

Working links have been posted, now let the thread rest in peace.

So, what do you prefer? I've heard all sorts of compelling arguments from the "experts" ("shutting down saves electricity, but puts extra strain on your hard drives," that sort of thing), but I figured I'd ask the "average" computer user what they do, and why.

A brief explanation of the choices:

Shut down/hibernate: You completely shut down your computer whenever you're done using it, or at the end of the day. This includes "hibernate" mode, which saves the contents of RAM to the hard drive and then shuts down the computer.
Leave running: Just as it says. You leave your computer fully up and running 24/7, only shutting it down when necessary (lightning storms, hardware upgrades, repairs, etc.)
Standby: This one falls somewhere between the first two, as it basically leaves your computer running, but shuts down hardware that's not in use (like your hard drives and monitor).

Personally, I leave my computers running all the time. I used to shut them down every time I was done using them, until my primary computer developed a strange tendency to not turn back on unless I cycled the power several times. I eventually replaced the power supply, which solved the problem, but I've still preferred to leave my computers on ever since. That way, they're always ready to use, and I'm not putting any unnecessary strain on my components by continuously cutting and reapplying power (this is especially bad for hard drives in the long run). I power off the monitor and (sometimes) the speakers, but that's it.

Personally, I believe that the water was supposed to rise once you broke the emerald. Consider the following:

1. The water doesn't seem to serve any purpose in this level.
2. You can't go down the pipe.
3. The pipe abruptly ends a few screens down.
4. There's a near-vertical slope nearby that Sonic can't climb, littered with several sets of horizontally-placed Rings.
5. There's a stream of water moving along the ground at the top of the slope, but it has no effect on Sonic.

Think about it...Sonic breaks the emerald, jumps on a floating platform placed at the bottom of the slope, and rides it up the slope as the water rises. Once it reaches the top, it floats along the stream, like a log ride. It all makes sense.

Uh...no. SMD is merely an interleaved format used by some old copiers (Super Magic Drive?); AFAIK, the first half of the ROM contains the even bytes, and the second half contains the odd bytes. This can easily be mistaken for compression. Compare SMD and BIN filesizes sometime, and you'll find that they're not much different.

Sonicandtails, if you're not gonna provide any actual help, don't post anything. This board doesn't have a (publically accessible) search function, so you can't always expect people to find answers in the sticky/old threads. Cut him some slack.

Gotta agree with Karadur, it needs a new title. "Super Mario World [number]: [subtitle]" is way overused. Try coming up with something totally unique, it'll help your hack stand out. (Not that "Super Mario Odyssey" is incredibly unique... )

I wish I had enough free time to test a hack now and then...or work on my own, for that matter.

I believe he's talking about the rock. See the grass along the bottom? It's supposed to line up with the grass below.

And I have to agree, there aren't enough Sonic hacks available. This looks promising.

What brand is it? I have a very nice Creative 52x drive that died on me shortly after I got it...first, it wouldn't read any discs (it would shuffle around a bit and then spit the disc out), then soon after, the computer wouldn't recognize it at all. The light was a constant yellow-orange at this point (which is weird, because it's only supposed to be either red or green, depending on whether it's in "turbo" mode or not). It worked for a short time after moving it into a different computer, though...

If everything checks out OK, BIOS- and cable-wise, the drive's probably gone bye-bye.

CHILL THE F*CK OUT, Sonicandtails. The SMB2 Discombobulator can be very difficult to get the hang of, as SMB2 has some weird engine limitations, the editor itself has some annoying bugs, and there's very little helpful documentation available. He has every right to sign up and ask questions, that's what this board is here for.

I see only one "noob" in this thread, and it isn't him.

Posted on 02-07-05 03:31 PM, in Level exits counter question Link
1. Convert the number of exits in your hack to hexadecimal (ex: 77 exits = #$4D hex).
2. Put this number at $1F6D in the ROM (should be #$60, or 96 exits).
3. Change the two *96 tiles in GFX29.BIN to the number of exits in your hack.

Or, if you don't want to change the tiles, you can change $1F71 and $1F73 to point to regular number tiles instead (#$87 is the left half of *96, and #$88 is the right half).

Lessee...

PC #1: Windows 98 SE
PC #2: Windows 98 SE dual boot w/Windows 2000 Pro
PC #3: Windows 98 SE

The Windows 2000 install is in there because I planned on buying DOOM 3 eventually, and it needs 2K or higher, as do a lot of new programs being released. XP ain't never touching one of my machines, not when 2K is basically the same thing without all the bloat.

The reason the background isn't fading out completely is because SMW only fades the first 8 colors of each BG palette; obviously, the offending objects are using colors 8-F. There aren't any easy ways around that problem, unfortunately...do you maybe have some unused palettes you could remap those tiles to?

Calling the Bowser lightning routine in a normal level won't work, unfortunately...I haven't examined its code, so I don't know what would need to be done in order to make it work. My lightning is all custom code, made from scratch (aside from a random number routine I picked up somewhere), but it's kinda hard-wired into my hack at the moment...no separate custom block/palette ASM yet.
