Glee!

That was in Windows 98 SE, with relatively conservative BIOS settings (I'm not really a tweaker/overclocker). I'll try it again in 2000 later tonight and see if there's any difference...

I'll OK duffjr's bump in this case, since it was for a good reason. WolverineDK's post, however, was a totally useless reply to a dead conversation.

I ran AquaMark again in Windows 2000, and my new score was 9600. I guess Win98 does eat more CPU cycles...

Generally, about once or twice a year. I've been pretty lucky when it comes to hard drive fKitten Yiffers and viruses (only dealt with two viruses since ~1993, first one messed up my floppies, and the second one only affected my new computer, which was easily wiped/reinstalled), though I really need to change my habits. My brother and I plan to split the price of an external DVD burner soon, which should make things a lot easier.

I'm gathering from everyone else's results (mostly Dan's and Colleen's) that my CPU is more than adequate, but my video card is proving to be a HUGE bottleneck, as it has the biggest impact on the final score. Is the FX 5500 really such a lousy card?

Bleh...I found that a long time ago, I guess I forgot to post it.

For some strange reason, patching the code with a real Game Genie causes the game to cycle through ALL the VROM banks. Very bizarre...

The old board doesn't wanna load right now, so I can't check my original join date, but I know it was within a month or two after the board opened. But how many people were around before it opened?

Key Cancer Gene Discovered

I've heard that we'll have a cure for cancer within my lifetime, but I didn't know it could be this soon. Considering cancer is now the #1 cause of death in America for people under a certain age (it just passed heart disease), this is a major development. Now I just hope they can create the right drugs to safely deactivate this gene...

SMB is missing certain things SMB2 has, like wind, different Mario/Luigi physics, and a bunch of objects, so it'd be a pretty limited conversion. There are pirate SMB2 ROMs floating around (i.e. the pirates actually put the game on an ordinary cartridge--it was originally a Disk System game), so you could just play one of those...

I'd volunteer, but I developed a deep hatred for that game's level format while working on LotBB2. There were many occasions where I couldn't do something relatively simple due to inherent engine limitations, or had to open a hex editor and tweak the data manually. It didn't help that Acmlm's editor has some pretty evil bugs...

Yeah, the timing differences between NTSC and PAL could definitely cause problems, most likely with my custom HDMA code and other sensitive things (does an unhacked NTSC ROM work fine?). IIRC, someone e-mailed or PMed me a while ago, telling me they tried the hack on a real NTSC SNES, and it ran fine.

||bass: I didn't do anything that would be considered "illegal" on real hardware. Most of my code doesn't even touch the hardware registers.

If someone knows where Mario's speed is stored (both walking and running), a quick ASM hack could be created that checks whether Mario is riding Yoshi or not, and adjusts his speed accordingly. Voila, there's your motorcycle.

My guess is that either the chip that communicates with the PC went kaput, or there's a short in one of the data wires somewhere (probably the latter, considering how the problem previously fixed itself when you lifted the mouse off the desktop). The optical sensor still works, since the LED gets brighter when you move it, but if it's not even communicating button presses, it's definitely a goner.

My IntelliMouse Optical got old and started acting "jumpy," and I couldn't find an identical replacement anywhere. The closest model I found only has two buttons and a scroll wheel, and I need my Back/Forward buttons. I tried a wireless IntelliMouse Explorer, but the cursor movement felt really awkward for some reason. It seemed like it would take a split second for the cursor to start moving (probably a limitation of the wireless technology the mouse uses), and the cursor would generally "float around" a lot, which really threw me off. I'm now using a Logitech MX310, which is functionally identical to my original mouse, but the shape just isn't as nice.

He's talking about Super Mario Bros. 2, an NES game, not SNES. NES expansion is way different and generally much more difficult. However, in SMB2's case, you can expand the VROM data without any problems. Acmlm did it in Strange Mario Bros. 2, if I'm not mistaken.

If you move the entire animation into expanded VROM space right after the ending sequence, change the following bytes:

$1FB05: A0
$1FB09: 80
$1FE3F: 80

This will cause the animation to cycle through banks 80-9E, instead of the usual 18-24. You'll probably also need to modify the iNES header and specify how much extra VROM you've added.
