So far, I've gotten a PETsMART gift card and...a hamster habitat.

(I recall hinting a while ago that I wanted to get a small pet of some kind, now that I've moved out of my parents' house and away from our dogs, and...I think I know what I'm getting now. Glee!)

Dude, Win2K basically *is* XP, without all the worthless bloat. You almost never see products that work only in XP, it's always "2000/XP".

And this news does indeed blow. As long as they keep releasing stuff through Windows Update, though, I guess it's not that bad...

One time, my newer computer went BEEBEEBEEBEEBEEetc. while it was shutting down...I still don't know why, and it hasn't happened again. It tends to do strange things sometimes.

As for my older computer, it could be beeping right now, but I'll never know--the speaker hasn't been hooked up for a long time.

Are you sure it's your monitor making the noises? I know some motherboards, and more often sound cards, will make strange hissing or buzzing noises when you move the mouse or perform certain other activities. You can literally hear the system processing...it's weird.

Yeah, Zelda 1 uses VRAM, which means the graphics are stored with the program data, as opposed to a separate VROM chip (this method is far more versatile than VROM, but much slower, since the CPU has to copy the graphics byte-by-byte to VRAM). Graphic data is often stored at odd locations in these games, so you'll need to shift things around a bit, as Leno said.

The level data could very well be compressed. The ROM is only 128K, the same size as the first game, yet it has more/bigger levels.

I've never owned a motherboard with a built-in speaker...they've all had the standard jumper-style connector that plugs into a speaker in the case. Most pre-built computers probably have the little built-in "buzzers."

Some TV tuners require you to switch from composite mode to S-Video mode and vice-versa. Check the UltraMedia configuration for such an option.

If that doesn't work, the player may be applying some form of copy protection to the outgoing signal, which most TV tuners probably recognize. Since it's a DVD/VCR combo, that's a definite possibility, though it seems strange that S-Video would work fine...

HyperHacker: "...but when I looked in the manual later, it said that 386 MB is recommended for 2K/XP." I'm assuming he has XP.

512 - 448 = 64MB...oooohhhh. Does your computer have a built-in video chipset? If so, I'll bet it's stealing some of your RAM for its own use (onboard video rarely, if ever, has its own dedicated RAM). A separate video card would solve this problem, and boost performance to boot. Did it show 256MB before you upgraded, though?

I think the part in bold is your problem.

Seriously, though, make sure the disc isn't all scratched and dirty, like I know many rental DVDs are (people are so careless with high-tech things). DVDs can be easily damaged by even relatively small scratches and fingerprints. If it looks OK, all I can say is your DVD player might be going bad. Is it a DVD-ROM drive, or a standalone DVD player?

Posted on 01-05-05 03:46 PM, in I belive that my computer is haunted. Link
It *might* be a power supply issue. When mine was going bad, whenever I shut down Windows, the computer would shut off and then turn itself back on a split second later (though the screen would remain blank). I had to use the actual power button to turn it off after that.

I don't know how much control the power supply has over hibernate mode, though...there's a huge difference between "hibernate" and "shut down." It could be a motherboard issue...
