Not necessarily. Lunar Magic is almost certainly better than the original tool Nintendo used, not just in terms of the features it has, but also overall appearance and ease of use. For all we know, the original level editor could've even been text-based, using hex values in boxes rather than actual graphics (levels were often designed on paper anyway, so you wouldn't need to see the layout on-screen). Keep in mind that Nintendo's programmers and designers built the game from the ground up, and thus had an intimate knowledge of its inner workings; they likely wouldn't need a nice-looking GUI oozing with features to effectively work their magic.

Make another thread like this and I'll give you such a PINCH!

Come back when you've got some actual progress to show, and next time, try to make the topic title pertain to the post within, OK?

Hrm. Sorry for the tease, everyone...there is no reward for clearing the training room, at least not yet. It's just another area that was overlooked in the mad dash to release a demo before 2037.

Should I release an updated demo with an actual reward for clearing the training room, or just wait for the next release (likely the final)? The update would also temporarily reopen the path back to Green Valley from Bowser's fortress.

Er, no...you'd be an hour early (you'd think it's 3:00, when it's actually only 2:00).

Who else thinks this whole Daylight Saving thing is archaic nonsense? I know the story behind it, and why some people think it's still useful, but it still seems fairly pointless to me. Props to Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, most of the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and the state of Arizona for deciding not to observe this annoying ritual.

That is complete and utter BULLSH*T. It's just like the GIF patent...someone is obviously very, very greedy or very, very broke (or maybe very, very both). What makes them think they can come forward 16 years later and expect companies to just fork over royalties for all their past works? This could force countless successful, respected companies into bankruptcy!

I think patents should be invalidated if the owner doesn't bother to step forward and enforce them within x number of years...maybe that would put an end to this innovation-stifling nonsense. I'm sick and tired of it.

Apparently, it's the companies' responsibility to look through all the patents ever filed and make sure none of the old, obscure, stupid ones apply to whatever they're doing.

The patent office has needed HUGE reforms for a long time now, primarily a new set of submission criteria. Maybe something like this will finally kick-start the process, especially if big, bad Hollywood gets involved (now that they have such strong ties to the video game industry).

What's with people nowadays getting "tons of viruses and spyware" just by connecting to the Internet? Why is it that I've never had this problem in the 7+ years I've had Internet access?

The mind boggles.

Posted on 11-08-04 02:32 PM, in Keygens and cracks Link
I think it's kind of pointless to pay hundreds of dollars for a program I'm only going to use a few times, like Flash. I downloaded and cracked Flash 5 because I needed to create an amazing intro for the Eskimo Deathmatch Finals (the precursor to Acmlm's Sim-Battles) several years ago, and the trial period wasn't nearly long enough to learn how to use and get a feel for the program. Why blow a paycheck or two on something I'm only going to use, like, twice a year, for strictly personal reasons?

I think more programs need longer trial periods, or less-restricted trial versions (what's the point of trying out a disk maintenance utility when it doesn't actually do anything to the disk, or only works on floppies?). I'd also like more companies to release free versions of their software for personal use that have most of the full version's features, but are missing a few key ones that commercial users would need (for example, a 3D rendering program could render at a maximum of 640x480 for home users, but go into the high thousands for professionals that need the extra detail for printed materials or movies/TV). Lower price tags on most programs would also be nice. (Is Windows XP Pro really worth $300 to the average user?)

C'mon, people need to learn how to use hex editors if they're gonna do this ROM hacking thing. Spoon-feeding them IPS patches only reinforces their lazy habits.

Yeah, I kinda...forgot about red dots. The yellow ones were just placeholders to be used until I decided which levels were to have secret exits (I usually design the map first and add the secret paths later). Yet another thing to fix for the next release.

The really secret secrets, though (like Legends)...I may just leave those yellow, and rely on other types of subtle hints (like the jumping Blob--notice he's the only one in the level).

You can use levels 0-24 and 101-13B on the overworld, which is 96 levels altogether. I don't know what happens if you go past 96 exits...the code is almost certainly designed to show only 2 digits, so it'll either stop at 96 or 99, or just mess up (like show "A6" instead of 106).

Hmm. It looks like some sprites are making use of their index number somehow, so copying their data to another index, or replacing their data with another sprite's, can cause things to go screwy. You can tell this is the case by looking at the different versions of Chargin' Chuck; they all act differently, yet point to the same code and have the same flags set. I have a bad feeling this behavior is defined by each sprite's individual ASM code, and isn't stored neatly in a table somewhere...

Okay, I've updated the Stony battle a little bit:

To eliminate the safe spots on the ground, I added another custom block under the hidden door that changes from spikes into bricks when you beat the boss. I also added spikes to the moving ropes, as you can see (though I might tweak their placement a little). Even I had difficulty beating him this time around.
