Well, I just updated my motherboard (MSI KT4AV), hard drive (Seagate 160GB), and RAM (256MB PC2700), so the last thing I really want is a new CPU. I currently have an Athlon XP 2000+, but my new board is capable of running up to a 3000+. *drool* I suppose a new sound card would be nice, too, but my current one does what I need it to do. The Sound Blaster PCI512 is practically a Live!, anyway, just without all the bells and whistles... |

Hey, uh...have you ever examined the code at the very beginning of the ROM? It appears to be a large portion of debugging code of some kind. I visually traced a large part of it, and it seems to load some colors and graphics, references a couple of memory addresses that are never initialized anywhere in the ROM, and finally puts itself into an endless loop. Viewing this part of the ROM in YY-CHR reveals an unused font in 2bpp GameBoy format, and there's some unused ASCII text as well: HOVER 1 TANK WALKER 1 REL AXIS 1 REL AXIS 2 DEMO GAME PAUSED REL AXIS 3 Judging from the strange Arwing transformation references (scrapped ideas later used in SF2?), I'm assuming this code is pretty much dead, a non-functional fragment of long-lost debugging routines. It makes me wonder if there's any other unused code hiding in the depths of the ROM, perhaps some that actually works... [EDIT] Some more text I forgot about: LOADING BAY EMPTY NULL MISSILE1 MISSILE2 TLASER HMISSILE TM GUN MACH GUN LASER TRILASER SHOT GUN Machine gun? Shot gun? Homing missile? Also, something of interest in the StarFox 2 "final" version, at $6BDA2: 00 0 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 000 0 0 000 000 000 000 (edited by Neko54123 on 09-08-04 04:47 AM) (edited by Neko54123 on 09-08-04 04:49 AM) (edited by Neko54123 on 09-08-04 04:50 AM) |

You couldn't just shove 'em in the "empty" spots. The SPC700 doesn't have much RAM at all, and all the game's songs are loaded at the same time (except the overworld and ending tracks, which are separate banks), so there's probably very little room left to work with. Besides, SMAS uses a different sound engine anyway... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Floating black piranha plants: BAD. Ball-chain platform not attached to anything: BAD. Other than that, looks nice. (edited by Neko54123 on 09-08-04 05:00 AM) |

Originally posted by VL-ToneStarGlider...wow, I'd never heard of the game before. Good thing this site exists! That reminded me of something else I found, near the beginning of StarFox 2: STAR GLIDER 01 NOV 1991 Check out the date! That's two years after StarGlider II was released. What's it doing in SF2? Could SF2 contain even older code snippets than the original? [EDIT] From StarGlider II's description: "...such as one that requires you to capture a space whale to trade for a ship enhancement." Hmm...perhaps the inspiration for the hidden whale in Sector Y? (edited by Neko54123 on 09-09-04 04:29 AM) |

There's no such thing as a "hex editor for dummies." You either know hex, or you don't. Some editors are easier to use and/or have a better interface than others, but none will make the actual hacking any easier. |
As for ASM, Zophar's Domain has plenty of documents you can look at.

ZoneAlarm was OK, but I got a lot of false alarms with it, and it would occasionally treat EVERY incoming connection attempt as an attack...I'd have to restart either ZA or my whole computer to get it working right again. |
If you have a little extra money to spend, I'd personally recommend a hardware firewall. I use a Linksys cable/DSL router, which lets me share my connection with multiple computers, AND acts as a firewall. I think they've gotten pretty cheap since I bought mine.

Some sound cards have line-level output and will never get very loud (like neotransotaku's; these require powered speakers), some have amplified output, and some are selectable (my old Sound Blasters had a jumper that would select either line-level or amplified output). It sounds like his card is of the first variety. |
I think Radio Shack might sell small amplifiers for use with headphones, or maybe even powered headphones.

I'm STRONGLY considering making a new rule: NO threads asking/discussing how to unlock hacks. The reasons have been stated many times before, and the topic is getting just a little bit stale. There is NO good reason locked hacks should be cracked open. If you locked your own hack and "forgot" to make a backup...well, that'll teach you the value of frequent backups, now, won't it? |

Get this: |
COMDLG32.OCX You might also need this: VB6 Run-time Files Put COMDLG32.OCX in your Windows\System32 folder (if a copy already exists there, back it up first). Now, click "Start," click "Run...," then type the following: regsvr32 \windows\system32\COMDLG32.OCX That oughta do it. (edited by BMF54123 on 09-14-04 04:09 PM)

It's the Mode 7 graphics data, compressed in some odd format. You can view them in a ZST with the right tools, but only after they've been decompressed by the game. I'm kinda surprised nobody's figured out the format yet (or bothered to post the info). |
I'm sure you could overwrite the decompressed graphics in VRAM with a simple DMA routine...I'll have to investigate further.

For future reference, BrooklynMario: try to make your thread titles pertain to the message within. "Does anyone know?" says nothing about the thread to those who might be looking through old posts for specific information. |

Yeah, the "flat" perspective of the old sprite was perfect for an overworld sprite. They may have even used the exact same graphics until the overworld palettes were rearranged. |

Something that random, alternating between restarting or just freezing, could be any number of things--an overheating CPU, bad RAM, a dying power supply. When it happened to me, I found out it was my power supply...more specifically, the connector that plugs into the motherboard. It was an old AT-style power supply, and had been used for a number of years with several motherboards, and the contacts had apparently become dirty or corroded and burned themselves black. The board wasn't getting enough power, which caused the random lockups and reboots. The same thing happens to some old arcade machines after a while (in fact, I think that's what prompted me to check the plug in the first place). |
I'd suggest you do what everyone else said first (update drivers, check for viruses, maybe reinstall XP). If that doesn't help, have a professional look at your system, unless you feel comfortable poking around inside the thing.

I rather like F-Prot, myself. Only the DOS version is free, but I know how to use a command prompt, and you can't beat free. |
