With that out of the way, can anyone tell me how to open the program period?
I've installed it, but whenever I try to open the .exe a message box informs me that it could find the APOLLO SE61.dll or something. Anyone know what to do about this?

Uh, well, thanks for trying to help anyway with the problem. I'll see what I can do from here. Or I'll just scream really loud repeatedly.

I must say, I am quite impressed. I find it hard to criticize, even though I would be doing it to help. I suppose that, if that little platform below the roof can still be walked on, the one with the present, you might want to change the GFX of the snow on the roof. If you were to walk close to the edge of the platform, then you would be walking on the snow infront of you!

I say that you should just make this hack however you feel, and stop trying to shape it to the crowd's desires. The idea of a Mars world sound fine to me.

And as for the Mario tiles...well...I've decided that I don't think I'll ever even try to change Mario's mustache. But that's me. You should create a test hack where you just play around with the Ex/GFX to see how the system works. Going in there with no knowledge of how to do anything could be disastrous.

"But seriously, what are you interested in?"
I joined here out of interest for Lunar Magic.

"I bet you lurked on the forums before, like I did."
Actually...uh...I just found this place a few days ago. I was looking for a walkthrough for that dastardly hard SDW:TLC game, which led me here, then I decided to stay.

Thanks for the welcomings everyone!

Transparent Mario
Glass of Water
Lets Mario go through enemies and some blocks. Lava or spikes, however, will still hurt him and cause him to lose his power.

To me, it seems the only option is to flatten the tops of the snow. There might be another way, and if there is, I'd be glad to learn it, but this is the only way around it that I know of.

BTW, how did you make the snow waist-level to Mario?

For some reason I like screen four.

Nice idea, Aioria, to make a hack with no graphical changes. More focus on the levels. I like it.

"9. No matter what I do, the palette changes I make in the overworld editor aren't saved in the actual game, even if I save the map onto the rom. I used one of the default palettes to make the first map grey, but when I try to change the Yoshi's Island palette to make the paths Mario walks on between levels and the grass around them a different color, though it looks perfect in the OW editor, it still looks like a cream path and green grass in the rom itself :/ "

You have to start a new game every time to see the changes that you made in the overworld. Have you been loading quick saves to see the changes in the palette? Just start a new file.

Look! I'm making a hack! And it's better than all of yours!!! j/k, That JAMH and Luigi's Adventure series looks pretty cool.

This is my first time posting a hack demo, so try to bear with me if I'm not doing something right. From what I understand, you need to download the IPS, which is here:

http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/blues/sonofabulletbrain/Super_Mario_Place_V1.ips

You'll also be wanting some screens, I figure. Here they be. These are of the six levels that you can play in.

This is Pancake Desert 1, home to pokeys, moles, and bandit koopas.

Grapevine Jungle 4, taking place in the canopy of a Jungle.

One of my favorites for the Frosty theme, Frosty Highlands

Cola Caverns 1. Yep.

Another Jungle level. This one, Grapevine Jungle 1, makes use of the vines alot.

And here's the Jungle Castle. I'll let you find the secret in this one for yourself.

These 6 levels are just a random collection from the game that I like most. Note that the REAL overworld in the game will be much more creative.

That's it. Comments? Questions? Flames?

I s'pose some background information is needed.

Keikonium:

"1st shot: BG is just bad. sorry to say. It does fit in with the FG tho, which I dont think looks bad at all. The pokeys look awesome! Much better green than yellow. The pillars dont look to great tho, they just seem weird"

I always thought the other way around; I hate the FG. I'll see what I can do to the BG, and maybe I'll make those pillars straight.

"2nd shot: Altho using glitched sprites on purpose isn't recommended and people will tell you not to do that, they sort of fit in here."

What? Glitched sprites? I did not know those were glitched. Odd...

"But how is mario supposed to fit thru that small hole without sliding and getting hit? Brown coins isn't a good idea and whats up with the power up?"

Mario can get through by shooting the plant with a fireball, being small, or waiting for the plant to go up. It goes up and down. Brown coins - I know. I changed the powerups. The lime is actually a flower.

"3rd shot: Why is there text, dont use glitched platforms (well, at least dont take shots when a portion of the platform is missing) and change the BG color so its darker and it will look better."

The text is there because I just loaded the game to take a screenshot. Maybe the platforms glitched because of too many sprites?

"4th shot: I think this looks good. I would love to see that ground in better resolution tho (press F2 in ZSNES and save the shots as a PNG and keep them the same size they save as). That ground looks really good!"

Thanks. Only, I use snes9x.

"5th shot: really...full. dont put vines side by side, makes it WAY to easy to climb right across. And vary the lengths."

You actually can't tell, but it is really one big maze. The vines are there so it is like a maze where you can go up, down, left and right. That's why they're close together.

"6th shot: The green in the BG doesn't look very good. Maby since its a jungle castle, make some trees showing in thru the window and and some overgrown vines inside."

Yeah, that was where I began to experiment with the BG. I'll fix it up.

Kyouji Craw:

"1st: All screenshots need serious resizing." - Yes.

"1: GAHAHAHA. The graphics here are pathetic. These suck. Start over. The pokeys have a poor palette."

...It could pass off as pizza, right? I big...pizza...level?

"2. Horizontal logs look good. Everything else is quite poor. Level design looks pretty terrible, too, way too many sprites and far too cramped."

Funny. That one part, for maybe two screens, is cramped. The rest of the level is a line guided platform level. 0_0 My bad for not making that clear.

"3. Suck de duddly uck. Broken platforms, ridiculous amount of piranhas... No. Try again =/ On the plus side, the graphics aren't too bad, just shade those blocks better."

I don't know why the platforms glitched, but the pirhanhas are there so you can't stand on the platform. You have to move fast, or be bitten.

"4. Again, foreground is incredibly ugly. The caps look painful, they should be outside the koopa's head, not... Exactly at wide The arms on them look quite poor."

I agree with you on the caps. As for the arms...I assume you mean the picks...I might make them more distinguishable.

"5. It seriously hurts the eyes, it does. Start over. START OVER. Way too many vines, black piranhas where there shouldn't be, the aforementioned vines end suddenly, and what the god is with those koopas? They look pretty terrible."

The vines are for the maze, the black piranhas are on the metal blocks so you cannot just walk across, and the blocks act as the 'walls' of the maze. The koopas are supposed to be like indians.

"6. Way too many of the wooden spikes, the level looks monotonous. The background is the same as the original, but worse by the inclusion of a glitched-looking tile and an extremely poor background color."

I'll be sure to change/kill that level.

Thanks for you time, guys.

Wow. Nice laboratory tiles. But, as for that new BG you added to the rock level...I liked it the way you had it before. Still, it's your hack, do whatever the heck you want with it.

Say...where any of those graphics ripped? If not, then, you deserve like a trophy or something.

More screenshots of the levels are coming in a few hours from this post, and they'll be smaller.

Well, come on now, this game is meant to be played, not looked at! Someone play it already! Geez! You'll see the quality that it has, if it isn't the most beautiful thing yet. I focus my time more on gameplay than graphics. Each level has its own architecture, (like the desert is flat with cliffs and pillars. This level is best done at a run.) and its own sprite to make it unique. I need feedback on the gameplay, too, you know!

I'm not sure what the problem is when you guys try to load this blasted thing. It is my first time displaying a demo, though, so I'm not too surprised... Here's a step by step list of what I did/

1. I make a copy of Super Mario World in a folder in My Documents.
2. I create a patch with LIPS, first selecting the copy of SMW, then my game, then save the patch.
3. I upload the patch onto my page.
4. To see if it works, I downloaded the IPS from my site again and saved the IPS as something else.
5. I applied the patch to a copy of SMW, not the same one I used to patch it in the first place.
6. I loaded the thing in Snes9x.
7. It works just fine for me.

I have no idea what's going on here. If this doesn't work now ( http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/blues/sonofabulletbrain/Super_Mario_Place_V1.ips ) , then I am going to seriously just consider quitting all of this crap. Why struggle with a program that is so insanely hard to use/understand sometimes (LM) to make this game, go through so much trouble to patch it when I could just give you guys the darned rom on its own, and try to figure out WHAT IN THE HECK is causing all of this if the game doesn't even look good at a glance anyway?

Steaming, venting,

I hope this works for someone or that someone can point me in the right direction, cause this is starting to interfere with time I'd rather spend on schoolwork or dinner.

Alright alright alright. After an hour of searching online, I found a clean SMW rom, and did the whole patching business with it.

Now, if you guys still have patience, you can try one last time. If it doesn't work, then oh well, I may still continue this hack and hope that I've figured out a way to make it playable to everyone by the time it is finished. Otherwise I'll only show it to my easily impressed friends who know nothing about ROM hacking.

W-what's this? It works? IT WORKS? FINALLY!!! I hope it'll do this for everyone now. Ugh, I feel a lot better now.

Oh yeah, Breakman:

"1: What's up with the Nintendo Presents screen? Half of it is garbled"
That was done entirely on purpose. It is supposed to be garbled. Don't ask why, but it is no accident.

"2: Looks like you've been having trouble with events, too. I finally figured them out, actually, but you need to make it so you have to /beat/ a level before you can access the next one, unless you did that intentionally for the demo. I can walk to any level in the first world from the start!"
Naw, I know how to prevent that, what just happened was with my constant patching, re-patching, I must have patched the file I used, the one that lets me skip levels. If I had to beat each level every time I wanted to see changes I made, well...no.

"3. The indian Koopas look much better inside the game itself, but that feather thing is still pretty weird"
I think some black lines are missing near the end, yes.

"4. Something's wrong with the score graphics--like, when I hit a block with a coin, the '100' is garbled."
Heh. Thank the koopa's feather for that. That one particular square is shared by the score thingy and the back of the head.

"5. Those vines really do end abruptly enough for it to look funny. And the vine part of the first stage is kind of un-fun, especially with all those bottomless pits near the end...but that's just IMO"
Aye, I'm thinking about changing the graphics for that level, so they'll look more like a +. That way they connent with each other.

A sprite editor may help you there. Don't ask me where to get one. But, to make the sprites not appear to 'wobble', I would suggest making the graphics symmetrical.
