I'm going to write what I learned in English last year.

- Separate a series of nouns, adjectives, verbs, or any other part of speech, INCLUDING the last 2. Many people forget that.
- Separate descriptive phrases, introductory phrases, or identifying phrases.
- To bring together two independant clauses.
- To set up for a quote.
- To make a sentence clear.
- When it sounds like an obvious place for a comma. Keep in mind that when speaking, people can pause for effect whether or not it's proper english. That's where most people make the mistake in grammar.

And I aced that final.

Now do semicolons.

Semicolons are used in sentences where many commas are already used to help the flow. You put them in to separate the compound sentences to avoid using another comma, and that way it's obvious where the correct grammatical pause should be.

My english teacher was a nut about grammar, and for our final last year she made us write how nearly every punctuation mark can be used and why. And I haven't quite forgotten yet. Bring it on, boys.
