That's so completely unnecessary, really. If it was intentionally bad, sure, but this is just a patch making problem.

Doesn't change the fact that it's mildly amusing, of course, but still.

Bad things:

The first, and most noticeable thing, is that your paths are way too long. There's also way too many cliff edges near the bottom of the main overworld, it just feels cluttered down towards that end.

Good things:

That giant sun thing in the back is extremely cool, it must've taken up a metric ton of tiles, though. The little poles coming off the bridge are pretty awesome looking too, I like the rippled water effect on the bottom of them particularly.

Click here and make your decisions!

Normally we wouldn't bother making a thread about this over here, but this time around, we've included some categories that might actually interest us specifically. Categories 42 and 43 are the ones created specifically to appeal to those of us who are pretty much centered in our own little corner of the board, but feel free to vote in the whole thing if you know enough people to make decisions.

So get out there and vote, ya bums!

Posted on 06-21-05 10:49 PM, in JAMH: Cake Cave Link
In an effort to broaden the scope of the cake themed world, I hit on the notion of a Cake Cave. Thus, a new tileset was born. It's fairly consistent with the already exhibited Cake tileset, only with solid edges and ceilings added.

The main purpose of this screenshot is just to demonstrate that objects like pipes have not been neglected by the set, so I will be able to add sublevels. Not shown: pipes coming out of the ceiling and pipes coming out of the walls. Have no fear, they all exist, but I didn't feel much inclined to make a mockup.

This shot is mainly to demonstrate that I'm still devoted to making the objects as varied as possible and am not limiting myself to a single frosting color throughout the level. Note the walk through cake pillar as well. Cake pillars will not affect gameplay, but I feel they add a nice flair to the level design.

So what do you think? I haven't made a background yet, but that's because I can't really think of a good background design. Any help in that regard would be much appreciated. Additional questions, comments, and concerns are, as always, welcomed and appreciated.

Something to keep in mind is that the Cake Cave set is just an extension of the already shown cake set. Which means, a lot of the same tiles are reused to save on ExGFX and Map16 space. Whether you like the effect or not is up to personal taste, but I think it comes across very well.

And the real reason why the cake pillars are the exact same shade as the normal cake stuff (this is also in response to Kirby ATW who said something about candles and DisruptiveIdiot who mentioned layered cake):

As you can see, the pillars are really just the normal cake sides reused. Which means, more or less, that I can stick platforms that you can jump on and through the bottom without any problems. And, of course, since this is just an extension, all the doodads from the previous cake set are still present, candles included.

Glyph Pheonix: All sets I make are in a constant state of development. If you have better ideas, post examples and I'll test them out if I think they'll work well. And rest assured, any level using this set will NOT be a series of bland cake floors and walls. I'm not THAT bad at level design. Current screenshots are just to test the set.

Got a link? Post it and we'll let you know. If it's greater than a month old (and even a month is stretching it) the answer will automatically be "no", so don't even suggest it if it is.

Because it would be just as easy to create an entirely new thread and link to the old one? And if it's all entirely new content, why would you want anyone new to the board to bother reading through all the outdated stuff first?

I've pulled up your old thread in question, mikepjr. I don't see any problem with a bump, it's only about 3 weeks or so old. And I'm glad you asked before you just went ahead and did it.

I agree, a sticky topic would be a total waste of time.

The bottom line on bumping:

If you bump an old thread, you had better make very sure that the new content is directly proportional to the length of the bump. The older the thread, the better the content better be. We will close threads if we have to, with warnings or strikes if the offense is serious enough. This is, of course, subjective based on the moderator and the content, so if you are in doubt, PM one of us first.

Aside:

The entire point we are trying to make, Glyph Pheonix, is that you should avoid making bad decisions without some consideration first. Bumping an old and outdated thread with useless information is a prime example of this. Whether the user comes to us first or makes their own decision is not the issue here. I could care less either way, I'm sure the other guys feel the same way (or at least similar). The real issue is that we shouldn't have to hold your hands when you're posting. If you know what criteria we use to determine if a user is breaking the rules or not, you should be less inclined to break the rules, and thus, make our jobs easier.

Please don't do that. Unless you have a question that only one person can possibly answer, create a thread about it. If you think everyone would benefit from learning what you learn, create a thread about it.

You should be more concerned with yourself than what others are being told. But that's besides the point, I've had a couple of chats with our friend Blisseh over here about such matters.

Using bitmaps are a waste of bandwidth for both parties, they've the potential to be the largest format picture ever. These ones, however, are not TOO painfully large (so I won't be editting them into links as I would in some cases), but still, they're much larger than they have to be. I encourage you to save everyone's time in the future, DarkFlight, and save in a smaller image format. FYI, Paint CAN save PNGs, and in fact, I use Paint for all my screenshots.
