The problem with movies like that is that the size can get quite astronomical, especially when you're a dunderhead (like me) and don't know the first thing about encoding and compressing a movie file.

I really like the new overworld, it could use some better shading though. About the title screen.... trash it and start over. A lot of people here seem to be of the opinion that if it's new, it's good, which simply isn't the case anymore. You can do better.

Recolor the tiles necessary so they use the last 8 colors of the palette, and work from there.

Using YY-Chr to edit the tiles is a waste of time. Lunar Magic's 8x8 editor has a color remapping option, which is quite freakin handy if I do say so myself.

I'd like to make a suggestion, if you don't mind. To appease all those whiners who want graphics now and just can't wait, just load the graphics from a file packaged with the editor, instead of working on the tedious process of finding and decompressing them straight from the rom. This would only be a temporary solution, and it could be optional for those of us with patience.

Bleh, freewebs really sucks when it comes to download speeds. Just use Angelfire. It might take a little more work to link to your pictures (all you have to do is change the extensions), and it has better speeds to boot.

Telling him to not rip sets that other people used in their hacks is asinine. Hell, I don't even care if people rip off my hand made graphics, it's not like it really matters. If they can use them better than me, then hey, that's cool, and if they can't, I'm still top dog with them so that's cool, too.

Dreamcast is your best bet, if you have one. PSX might be able to run emulators, but you would have to mod it first. You don't have to mod a Dreamcast, which is why I used that. I would have used my Xbox instead, but JJ gots no money for a modchip. Run a search on Google for "dreamcast self boot inducer" and take things from there.

EDIT: Playing your hack on an actual television is quite the special feeling.

I don't know why the download doesn't work for you guys, but it worked for me. I played it, and while it was nice to see the graphics in use, it could definitely use some polish. Go in and fix the palettes and make the darn fireball blocks work (this is the most important thing to fix) and the hack will be better as a technical demo. Maybe add a textbox at the beginning or end (end is better, I think) giving credit to the specific GFX ripper or artist plus the name of the tileset, and things will be peachy keen.

Grain in screenshots is not something you should be concerning yourself with. Concern yourself with making your hack more enjoyable.

Just because you personally don't mind doesn't mean everyone should have the same preferences as you. I think anyone who is defensive over having their graphics ripped has a justifiable opinion.. largely because when other people use your graphics, the uniqueness of your hack is decreased, and you have a right to protest that fact.

Right, exactly. Some mind, and others don't. Until this topic, there was no real way of knowing that it was taboo to borrow from these specific authors. At least, I don't remember any accompanying text file when I downloaded the hacks explicitly stating anything along those lines, nor was there anything in the topics on this board that I got the hacks from. And considering that the graphics (for the most part) aren't original creations of the authors, it's really no different than lifting the graphics from the original sources. Personally, I would never do it, because it's just as easy to take from the originals as it is from the hacks, and I would rather situations like this didn't happen, but some people have different motivations and morals.

What Kratos says is more or less correct. You can get away with using some Layer 3 graphics if you aren't using them for anything else, plus anything from the title screen that you aren't saving is up for grabs.

Actually, it should be relatively easy to correct. Just pull up a fresh copy of the ROM and take the GFX file from there. Sure, you lose whatever work you did since then, but that's the price you pay for not using backups.

My hack can be found here.

Only the first world is candy themed. I have been considering stretching the theme over the other worlds, at least basing them all on food, but I haven't decided yet. I've taken a break from it for a little while, so in a month or so we'll see what I turn out next.

EDIT: The screenshots that are linked no longer work, but if you want to check my progress search for topics by me (you can do this by going to my profile and finding the right link, I think), and go from there.

I believe custom blocks to put a lot of different items into the item box have already been made, and BMF released a fix that helps give the items correct graphics. I wish I could be more helpful, but I never really bothered with them myself.
