Well, I have editors for many games that I hack when it does get boring hacking one thing. Keeps me occupied a lot.

I also have a few .spc files that I listen to while doing long-term hacking (for 30 minutes at a time).

I also sometimes have the TV on and listen to it while hacking. Sometimes, even television helps me make a new level! Weird, though...

And another thing that keeps me occupied is gum... yeah, gum. Just keep chewing and that is it... helps me stay occupied for some reason...

Well, the only way to use ExGFX on the overworld is by using a star/pipe to lead from one world to another. That will load the graphics up in the game. If you make Mario use a path exit, it won't load the ExGFX up until you die in a level.

So in order to use ExGFX, use pipes and stars to use them.

Well, I know I can make some sprites. I can submit some later. I just have to arrange them in a .zip file and I will submit them soon.

I would also like to see some other peoples sprites. I would like to see them. I would like to see everyone's custom sprites.

I got bored and made a tutorial for Eggvine, the Yoshi's Island editor.

http://www.freewebs.com/cpub13/EggTutor.zip

It is a .rtf file. I would put it in a HTML but I am lazy...

It also contains a .tbl to edit the text and also an IPS that uses these steps to show the steps in action and to serve as a base for each of the steps in case you are really confused.

If you got questions, read it... then ask.

This is mainly for newbies, but...

You can use the Koopas. Just need to use ExAnimationGFX to make it look right. The palette is already good, so that would work out well.

Really nice screenies. Title screen is really good, and the factory level is great! I also like the overworld. Good work.

There are a lot more objects that have to be edited vertically to have a horizontal width... I will make a list of them... later...

I should have mentioned that in the tutorial. I think I did, but breifly...

I will add that and also add Fu made a program that decompresses the graphics so you can edit the graphics and reinsert them into the rom. Really handy... it can do this:

This solves graphics editing... but reading the graphics from the rom... this does not.

Oh... that is the only problem? Hmmm... I could try playing around with those, or not because I have no real knowledge with pointers...

I could though experiment with Cellar Dweller's entrance/midway point data and see how that works... I could figure it out as I would like this feature implemented in Eggvine.

This will be updated shortly for this info and to tell people about YCompress...

Still, people should read this. It will help for those who think graphics make an editor...

Lets see... PkmnEmerald knows MBK was permabanned, yet he is a newb. Seems suspicious to me...

As for your question, kirbyfan, you didn't say what you needed help with. You just said you can create the Kirbys and that is it. What do you need a partner to help you with?

The sprites are... cool. The shaded ones look real good though, the goombas are... eh. The key looks good though and the ending tape looks good too.

As for that first screen, nice rip. Did you use Fu's YI decompresser to rip those graphics?

Second screen looks good... but please don't tell me it overwrites level 104. If it does, move it somewhere else. Use that level only for Yoshi's House (a little editing is okay, but if you overwrite the level, the ending credits are messed up...).
Word of warning to you about that.

It is better to rip them. All you would have to do is edit the palette then. There are some unused stuff in the graphics of YI that I think you might find useful (maybe like the rest of the unused Bomb-Omb sprite...).

These are my notes on Entrances/Midway points for v1.0 (U) of the rom. These were based on Cellar Dweller's very helpful info which I used to find these offsets.

xBF671: 00 07 77 00

00 is level number, 07 is the X screen and position number, and 77 is Y screen and coordinate number... last thing is probably when you complete the level it goes to the next level... I am not sure...

Changing 00 to 01 loads up level 1-2 with same starting position as 1-1. Change 07 to 12 makes X coordinate 12. Change 77 to 12 makes Y coordinate 12 (therefore, starting position is (12, 12) if both X and Y are changed)

xbf7dc 00 78 76 00

If 00 is changed, it will do exactly like above. Same applies to the others.

There is one major difference on how these are arranged: if a level has 2 midway points (for example, 1-2) it will do what the level is assigned to first and then the next midway point (usually is not level specific, but... eh). Lets say you put down 2 midway points in 1-1. What would the second one do? Put you in 1-2, right? Right. It will put you to the first midway point of 1-2. Well, change offset 0xBF7DF from 01 to 00 and what happens? Duh! It puts you in 1-1! There is one drawback... you cannot use the first midway point in 1-2. That is when in the header that last unknown value is used. I haven't touched this yet, but this is enough info to make midway points.

There are a lot of unused midways. Remember how 1-3 has one midway point? It can actually have 2 midway points, just that the first (yes, first) one leads to level 00 at coordinate (0, 0). Change it to have a completly different midway point if you change the level's second unknown value. Uhhh... I think...

x783847 is the data that Cellar Dweller posted about with the level entrances (Quote: "There is a table at 0x7E646(0F:E446) that contains 16 bit offsets, not indices, into the table at 0x7E6D0. Each entry in this table is a multiple of four. This table is 69(dec) entries long." [this pertains to the version 1.1, although 1.0 has different offsets...])

Finally, for the last thing, xBF751 is the thing with the midway points (Quote from Cellar Dweller (info for 1.1, although the same except for offsets): "There is a table of 16 bit offsets into the previously described table at 0x7E7B0(0F:E5B0)")

Pardon anything that may seem weird or I didn't know it, but then again, I am no SNES ASM expert... just a basic hex editing rom hacker...
Either way, anyone can do this. Even if you don't know ASM. Play around with this and see what happens. Although I would only apply the following, as that is all that is needed to do this stuff...

Entrances:
xBF671: 00 07 77 00
00 is level number, 07 is the X screen and position number, and 77 is Y screen and coordinate number... last thing is probably when you complete the level it goes to the next level... I am not sure...

Midway Points:
xbf7dc 00 78 76 00
Apply above.

This should be enough info for entrance/midway points. Hope this helps.

You all would have already spoiled it. Nobody would click it except for a laugh. *remembers Eggvine's About Dialogue cancel*

orynider: If you make an editor edit certain attributes like that, then all of DD's stuff that he is doing will become overused because people would want to make a hack like Mario Adventure (which after playing, I found lots of graphic glitches...) and then creativity and skill will go down. Besides, if you want ASM hacks, learn ASM yourself.

You don't use Elitemap to edit scripts. I haven't really hacked R/S but in the Elitemap folder there is a tutorial file in there. It will tell you how to save scripts.

Hope this helps.

Why can't you do it? Do you not know how to? If you don't, open up the SMAS rom in a tile editor and find the cave background. Then you copy and paste to an ExGFX folder, set up the Map16 and palette, and there you go.

Hope this helps you.

Why don't they work? You can't put them as the background? Can't assemble them in the Map16 editor? What is the main problem.

If you can't place the tiles on the background, change the BG map page for that level to the page with your graphics and then try placing the tiles in the Map16 editor on the background.

If you can't assemble the Map16 files, do the same thing as you would with the ground, but put them on a different page (pages 10 and up, I believe...).

If it is just because you don't understand anything I just said, read the help file. It (get this) helps you!

This is no different from using YCompress. I know how to do it, so...

It also helps to put a copy of command.com in the same directory as the rom so you don't have to type in C: and whatnot.

It has been a while since I gave out an update for this... so here is an update.

Simple graphics edit, but the first graphics edit in Yoshi's Island.

1-5: Nightime Fields. I changed the palette because the poundable posts looked bad. Still changing the palette... I think the FG is too bright... what do you think?

1-6: Hey Hey, We're the Monkeys! Beginning.

More of 1-6.

1-7: Snow Day. As you can see, it is a snow level.

Skiing. It is short, but it works.

You "crash" at the end of the skiing.

Lakitu Cloud puzzle.

Mid-ring. Enter it, die, and...

...you end up here. I edited the midway point on this one.

Any comments or suggestions?

I thought the penguins at first would be too difficult, but after trying it out, I kept making it across a lot. Besides, that is the only time you do jump on the penguins while on the skis. They don't fly back and forth either. One moves to the left, the other to the right. That is by changing the X position. It works and isn't hard. Besides, if you see a tad bit before the jump, you could easily see it isn't hard.

GY: I will try out that palette. I hope it looks good...
