They are interesting. The flower looks cool, but the Hammer Bros. just... looks weird...

Sign:
Use the 8x8 editor to draw the tip, then use the Map16 to make the tip. That is the only way I could think of.

Palette:
Ummm... no they are not...

Finished hack:
NOT made by Kt15X. The ExGFX are made by him, but look at the title... and I don't remember a final release of this hack...

Well... I will submit level 105, which will possibly be the first level. Any ExGFX used will be only for sprites (so I don't have to worry about the Map16). There might be a palette change, but that will probably be only if it is the Normal FG. This is a one-goal level.

Let's see if this type of hack will work. Seems like it is going nowhere right now...

I have to agree. This is supposed to be a thread for Chaos Flare's editor, not Squash Monster's (although... SM is the only one showing progress).

I don't care if the editor consists of squares that are colored or you can see the ground. As long as I know what I am editing, it is good...

If your editor edits properly, and does all it does well, then I will offer up no complaints. Yoshi's Island is one of those few GREAT games that everyone and their brother wants an editor for, at any cost. That, and with editors such as Lunar Magic making everyone biased against anything not up to it's standard, I can imagine how tough it must be. Just keep smacking people down, and do what you can. I'm impressed by the screenshots already, they look so 'tech-ish'.

I have to agree with you there. I don't care if I see fancy graphics. I just need to know what I am editing.

The editor looks good so far. I would like to try this out after sprite editing is implemented. I really couldn't handle editing levels, but not sprites... that would make level editing too limited.

So, with the latest features you have implemented so far... you have to work on the proper loading of levels now, right? I would think so since in your list of things to do, you have done screen-exit support and you handled the empty space at the end of the level. How soon will that get done?

No splitting the forum! There should be no reason for it. There may be lots of threads about simple stuff, but if the newbies had read the help file in LM, they would know how to do it. It is just common sense.

Sure, Lunar Magic is one of the easiest tools to rom-hack with, but who cares? So what if it is easy for people to learn it? Sure there are lots of newbie hacks floating around, but think about this: all rom-hackers started the same way. They made some crappy hack with loads of errors and stuff. I guaruntee you that everyone's first hack (released or not) was really crappy. They also probably posted something really stupid at the beginning, too. I know I did. I know some others did.

For you people that think Lunar Magic sucks because of its user-friendliness: don't post here. There is no reason for you to. You people think every hack sucks from the beginning just because the person who hacked it uses rips from other games or their homemade graphics suck. Get over it! You don't like LM, don't talk about LM. But there is one thing you don't even take into consideration: Level design. The level design is the key aspect to any game or hack. Demo World has good design, even though it uses rips from other games. Not every hack has to have ASM to be good.

In conclusion, newbies will post here with these questions, even though they could read the help file. Later, they will probably not even ask questions and start releasing some awesome hacks. How long that will take depends on the user. If they relie on this forum to answer every question, then they probably won't get used to it. Others might post maybe one or two questions at the beginning and will probably make a cool hack afterwords. It all depends on who has common sense to read the help file.

I vote no. No need to.

I should have asked to be a beta tester! I really want to try out this editor, whether with bugs or not. I won't complain unless I find a bug... but since you have plenty of betas...

Editor looks good, even though it is just a bunch of squares. As long as I could tell what is what, I am good to go.

GY: Wow! Nice screenshot. Good work...

You could go ahead and add me to the levels list. I will be glad to make levels for this...

I also have an idea. You could assign tile numbers for the Map16 for each person... since there are only going to be 6 level designers, why not assign some of the Map16 to them? Example: Let's say I had page 4 of the Map16 while another person has page 5. Something like that would be good instead of having to cram in everything in one page of the Map16... if you know where I am going with this...

Squash will implement graphics approximately "when he damn well feels like it". I'm sure he wishes it were a very simple matter to draw entirely using graphics ripped from the ROM. Unfortunately, those graphics may be compressed (which adds an additional step: decompression), and they always have to be converted to an RGB-style format before they can be effectively drawn on screen (our systems are based on the concept of each pixel is given a precise RGB-defined color, very unlike the tile-based system on the SNES). Let's not even get into sprite assembly, and the massive number of variations a sprite can be represented as in the ROM itself.

Perfect explination to everyone. Graphics are not the #1 priority when starting out an editor for a ROM. It is like when you were a baby: you first have to crawl in order to walk. Same applies here. You have to be able to at least load levels before the loading of graphics can be used...

The first few palettes (0-3... I think) are not able to be used on the overworld unless you use those same exact colors on the levels... in every level. Since those palettes are used for the foreground and background, it varies from level to level. Don't use them...

Well, the editor looks like it is coming along nicely. I am glad to hear that there is an open beta release soon. There are some really nice features in the editor and some I want to try. Can't wait to try it and cause it to crash in some way. The interface also doesn't seem that hard to use, but people who relie on graphics to see what they are editing will probably not even try it. I can almost tell what each object is what (such as what the ground is and stuff). Good work, Squash Monster.

In GFX2A, you should see a weird curve at tiles 7D and 7E (if you are using YY-CHR, you can see the tile number at the status bar). That is the top of the tide. GFX2B contains the actual water tiles (tile 0E). Edit those and you can be happy...

Lots of people have started making a FG for the computer background made by KATW. I am going to rip from Kirby SuperStar (Computer Virus Boss) and probably submit that. I don't know who is doing what right now. You will just have to be patient.

...dumbest question ever.

All the levels are in HEX. If you don't know what level is what, look at the overworld menu and view the level numbers in the view menu. You will see numbers. Go to the level number in the level editor and enjoy editing.

No. He is right. You have to put the graphics in the 8x8 editor and then assemble them in the 16x16 editor. You can't just insert the images into the Map16 and expect it to work. It is impossible anyway.

To go with this:

17. There are two background palettes to use. USE THEM INSTEAD OF THE STATUS BAR!

18. If you are going to use rips from SMAS... don't overuse them and don't use them the entire hack.

19. If you use SMAS graphics, DO NOT RECREATE LEVELS FROM SMB3 IN SMW! The levels will be too easy to complete and be dull and boring.

20. If you use rips, think about how much they have been used. If it is from SMAS or YI, know that they are overused.

21. If you want different graphics, make your own. That way, your hack will stand out in some way...

22. If you want to have different Koopas and want different colors for them, have a custom palette and change the big black area to be different palettes. You can edit them in a custom palette level. That way you won't screw up the mushroom and flower and stuff.

23. USE CUSTOM BLOCKS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN USED A LOT! I have seen enough SMB3 style bricks and breakable blocks. What about the locked door blocks and palette-changing blocks?
