| Apparently, the EU told Microsoft to at least make Windows have WMP as an optional component, AFAIK. And now a special version of Windows XP Professional SP2 is out for Europe called "Windows XP Reduced Media Edition". It comes with all the features of Pro (doesn't come in "Home"), but without media-related stuff. http://www.flexbeta.net/main/articles.php?action=show&id=85 I have one question for Microsoft: Why not make it optional that makes hell of a lot more sense. |

Think about the 'Alexa' stuff that comes with IE. Think about all the fun data WMP sends to M$ when you use it. From there, it doesn't take much more thinking to see why they insist these programs are essential to the OS.  |

Oh please EU court, can't you make like... IE next time? Please? Hell, one step towards safety would be not making IE so "together" with the OS.  Althought I wonder why the hell they don't make it possible for current users to take away... I always use Winamp instead of Windows Media Player. |

| Now, I see this as a relatively intligent move on the part of Microsoft. They have basically outsmarted the EU court system by meeting the court demands, but doing so in a way as to be certain that almost nobody will buy the RME version (which is what MS wants because they would rather you have Media Player 10 installed.) PS: Kitten Yiffer, it's not always possible to use Winamp instead of media player such as in the case of a DRM-protected WMA file. |

| Becuse IE is insecure becuse how it's built trapster, techincally IE is a part of the OS and when a IE vulnerability comes up... IE is almost impossible to remove from Windows as of now, if you succefully remove it competly then alot of things stops working. :/ |

| as long as you make the OS "think" IE is still there, then it will continue to function--which is the only reason why IE can be removed. The same probably goes for other integrated stuff in the OS. RME--will people even know what is the difference? I think the word reduce will make people think it isn't as strong as the the original and thus continue to buy the original... |

| Yeah, I think the name was invented to deter people from buying it. And, no, you don't need to add special registry entries or anything to trick the OS into thinking IE is installed. It works perfectly fine without. I tried removing IE from both XP and 2003 via nLite, they seem to work fine also. But be careful, the activation is done in JavaScript, so unless you have the corporate versions, it won't work. |

| *scratches head* Trust me, I've read some pretty stupid decisions made by Microsoft regarding Windows XP, and this strikes me as another one... maybe not stupid in terms of law, but definitely in execution. People who want it will end up downloading it through Windows Update. End of story. |

| Well... are you sure that they have WMP on WU for RME? They probably do, but you can't be sure unless you've obtained a copy of it. I'm sure the EU might want to get back at them if they indeed install WMP over Windows Update. Perhaps the only people buying this are the more "advanced" users who knows that he doesn't want WMP... personally, nLite has worked fine. |

| The reason is pretty simple. They made a media software based OS, forget what they called it. Trying to keep their golden egg as far a way as possible from the music os may just be their way of trying to get you to buy it, or to make WMP something like a priveledge only for people who bought the music os. | |||

| ||bass got the point. They also could name it "Windows XP Crippled Edition" for instance. The average user might think "Oh, no, an important thing is missing!" and get the "full" version of the OS. Whatever, I'm using Media Player ... Classic for videos, since it uses less RAM, is not that overcrowded and simply fits my needs. It is also already included in the K-Lite Codec Pack, so it is a nice alternative though I've enough resources to run WMP9 smoothly (WMP10 ? Never.) FreeDOS: I didnt' uninstall WMP9 on that machine( I use it only then, when I copy my audio CDs (!) on my computer to search the media library for ID3 tag information), but on my old Windows 98/ME computers, the uninstall _didn't_ remove WMP, but left an older version on the operating system. So the skinned Media Player 7 got away and was replaced with a much smaller version (which was anyway better when I had crappy 64 MB SD-RAM then only). So this also might end up like that. Or MS puts in some *obvious* hints for first "unknown" file formats: "We recommend Windows Media Player 10 for that AVI file. This player will fit your needs and you will be able to get it for FREE even in your RME edition via Windows Update ..." Edit: The product will be renamed, since the EU courts registered there's something fishy with that name: An english article. Also follow the link of MS' acception, it is quite interesting.
