| Just wondering....(potentially stupid Mac question here...) I was thinking that I need to do a reformat / reinstall of my Mac at some point. I never actually got a fresh version of OS X when I bought my Mac, I got the store display one. So, I've been thinking about doing a format reinstall. Which I thought was easy, I'll just back my stuff up and then I'll format.... ![]() ![]() ![]() I haven't the foggiest idea how to even begin formatting my Mac. ![]() So, I'm wondering if somebody here can suggest how I would go about this? Is this possible? Alternatively, would a 'Clean Restore' achieve the same effect I am after anyways? (I know how to do one of those) I'd like to give my Mac a GOOD nice happy clean out and get rid of the last traces of the store software. Not to mention all the shit that I put on there while I was trying to work out what I was doing on the Mac.(edited by Tarale on 02-14-05 06:29 AM) |

| Can't you boot into a Linux-style shell on a Mac? You should be able to do it from there. It might not be such a good idea though; I'm not entirely sure how Mac works, you might end up deleting the program that runs the CD-ROM. | |||

| /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility or The installation program. Stick in the CD, hold down C while starting up. Gold. Edit: Clarification. The CD install will allow you to reformat while installing (clean install only, obviously, not archive and install) and it will also put a pointer to Disk Utility (the same as above) into the Installer application menu. Most UNIX or UNIX-like operating systems never run into a problem of reinstall if you don't do anything bad... this is opposite of what you might be used to with Windows. ![]() Although if you're doing to see what it's like, go ahead! |

| Well, I'm doing it for a few reasons. I got a bunch of department store shit on my Mac I've never been able to completely rid myself of, for starters. Then there's all the shit I put on that I just don't want or need. And yeah, I am interested in learning what I do and what it's like. ![]() |
