This sounds simple: Name the online games that are free.

But also try naming good ones for Linux users as well.

Well, there's always Yahoo! games, which uses Java.

There's also Vagabond's Quest which is like the only text-based RPG I've ever been addicted to. It still has some graphics to it, and the arena feature is really awesome.

There's also some other good games out there, Linux probably doesn't support all these but this is for the other people who read this.

Gunbound
Survival Project
Well of Souls
SubSpace
Unreal Tournament 2004

You can also get Ragnarok Online free, come to IRC at #acmlm for more info.

Someone sticky this.

Don't forget that not all online games are free. Lots of them are, but they either...

A) Have you pay a small fixed sum for bonus features, or...
B) Have you pay for certain one-use features.

In any event though, some of them are certainly affordable.

Or ANYTHING that's browser-based - for example, if you liked soccer games you might want to check Hattrick. Most browser games are either simple or have cruddy interfaces, but there's some gems too.

Some online games I play are:

AdventuerQuest - A flash RPG game. It's free to play, and you can have up tp 5 characters. There's no interaction with other players yet, as it's still in beta. Also, if you make a 1-time payment of $12 USD, you become a Guardian, and get extra perks. IMO, $12 is cheap, and I feel it was worth it. Oh, that's $12 per character. If you make 5 characters, and want them all to be Guardians, you'll end up paying $60. Me, I have only one charcter, and he's a Guardian. That's enough for me.

Nation States - It's not exactly a game. You create a country, and vote on issues, which determine what happens to your country. I generally don't spend more than 5 mins. on it, but I still enjoy it. And yes, it's free.

Progress Quest - It's free, it's easy, and can be fun.

I used to play Kings of Chaos, but when Age 2 came around, they changed too much, and TONS of people left. I eventually did too. Last I knew, it's free to play.

Well, what type of online games are we talking about exactly? Online as in playing with other people, or online as... like... newgrounds flash games and etc.?

Tibia...
http://tibia.4players.de

It's a SNES-like online RPG... top-down 2D graphics, no sound effects, but it is free. However, it is VERY frustrating to play if you die often.

Knight Online
http://www.knight-online.com.my/

I'm downloading the client as I speak, so I haven't played it. However, it is apparently free and in 3D, and looks quite juicy.

EDIT: Dammit... this thread is like a month old. Sorry.

If it wasn't free, Acmlm wouldn't be as addicted to it as he was (or still is)

However, you can optionally pay for the items instead of earning them the old fashioned way.

Elric's version of Legend of the Green Dragon is as free as it can be. So is the original, for that matter.
