| Just wondering, I'm on a bit of a nostaligia kick as I just found something I haven't even thought of in a decade.... What was your first OS, and when? What was your first GUI and when? I don't remember my first OS really, I was 5 years old at the time, but I do remember the GUI that was used. It was called "GEM" and it came with the Amstrad we had in the mid 80's. It was a simple GUI with a windowing system. Designed after Macintosh's release, but before Microsoft Windows release. It had a few simple applications, the two I remember being "Dr Doodle" and "GEM Paint", both art programs. I used to LOVE GEM Paint. I discovered today that GEM has been open-sourced; and that there is a freeGEM project... although I don't seem to be able to find out much about it.... My second OS and GUI were that of the original Macintosh.  Again in the mid 80's. (Which I loved, but from there I our family tended to use DOS and IBM-compatible PC's more as it was what Mum had to use at work and knew better)What was yours?? DOS and Windows 3.1 as "shell". I couldn't DOS at all back then, but I did learn basic DOS quite early.  Or rather, I had Tabworks as GUI. Heh, I still remember the name but it was so long time ago I used it. Hehe this happened to me... xD Man, I wish Tabworks. I wish I found it again somewhere. We uinstalled it from my 486, which have Windows 95 and all now... |

| Having grown up in the DOS environment, I remember HATING Windows 3.11 when we got our first Windows OS. I hated trying to browse through the file structure to copy or move files. I used to go into DOS to do it. I remember hating Windows 95 even more. I deliberately replaced the shell with Program Manager. I'm not sure what happened in between then and the late nineties, but somewhere in there I got used to Windows. And then from the 00's onwards I slowly got annoyed with Windows... and now I have gone back to Mac.  |

| My first OS was MS-DOS, my first GUI was Quattro Pro. I can't remember when I started learning how to use the computer though. I remember I started out with Windows 3.0 until I got to middle school. By that point, I needed Windows 3.1. | |||

| That would have to be on my old 286 with MS-DOS 5.0. Ironically, we had 3.3, Windows/286 (2.0) and Windows 3.0 in a file drawer the entire time. My 9-year-old butt installed 3.0. :\ GUI uhm...Some weird WordPerfect Office thing...that or just MS-DOS Shell. |

| I didn't have a computer then, but I learned to use DOS 3.1 early enough. There was always fun to edit files like autoexec.bat, trying to set up soundblaster and other configuration options in games manually and other things  Even today it is not bad to have DOS knowledge, though Win ME and later operating MS systems have no true DOS environment anymore. Commands like cd, format and others are used anyway (regardless of newly implemented commands; such as convert.exe for transforming FAT32 drives into NTFS drives; since Windows 2000 is that possible). The first GUI I used, was Windows 95, too. Meh, using the mouse and a weird manager, called "Windows-Explorer", pointing into a popping up start-menu then ... | My first operating system was probably some DOS thing. I'm not an expert on operating systems, but I remember that it had only two colours, and that I used to play chess and Prince of Persia on it. The computer was my dad's, which he had for some work/studies related thing. This was probably in the early 90's sometime. My first GUI was Windows 95 on the school computers in 3rd grade. | System 6 - in other words, Mac OS 6 (it even has a fan site of sorts). Because our household has almost always been one with both Macs and PCs, I did use DOS too, albeit not as much - after all, which one's more pedagogic for a four year old to use, a GUI with icons or a CLI? When Windows 3.1(1) came around, the usage stayed about equal for several years although after Windows 95 I've been using PCs almost the whole time. Recently I've begun using the Mac and PC almost equally at home, and I bring my Mac in to work some days too. It's amazing to see how the Mac GUI has not seemingly changed a lot (1985 to 2005) when compared to Windows in the same period, and I think I was lucky to grow up with an opportunity to watch both Mac OS and Windows change. | Fucken Awesome! I'll have to show my brother this too, he'll love it. We used to take turns (okay, okay, fight over) on the computer playing Stunt Copter and Snakes Alive. *plays game* Oh yeah, I definitely remember this. | The first computer I ever used in my life was a Commodore 64 I really don't know whether you'd be able to call the blue screen / blue text thing you'd get when you started it up a GUI or not, but that was the first one I used As for my first OS, I believe is was some DOS-like thing. I know you had to type 'hdm' at a DOS prompt to bring it up, and I believe that stood for 'Hard Drive Manager' or something  Then it'd give you a list of things to pick from, and you could use the up and down keys, and the enter button to select which ever option you wanted. This is a trivial bit of information, but I also remember the GUI changing colors depending on who logged on. If one of the students did, it'd be a blue background, with white text, and if one of our teachers did, it'd be a black background with green text, which must've indicated they were using an account with more power.Both of those were used at school though. If you want to know what ones I used at home, to answer both, I have to say Windows 98 SE. Used that for a good couple years before the computer refused to boot, and we got this one  |

| It really depends on what you mean by first. The first time I remember using a computer was DOS, but I didn't really get to use it, just play games on it. The first OS/GUI I actually used was some old Mac OS at school; the first few times it was using some weird shell for kids but later I got to use the real shell too. The first I ever owned was a C64, though I don't remember any sort of GUI. The first GUI would have been Win 3.1, which I managed to completely screw up by just unzipping a file with a space in its name. (And then later fix by manually hex-editing the hard drive to rename it.) |

| My first OS and GUI was Mac OS 7.1PR2 or something like that (at least that's what the boot disk is: is it a prerelease? Might have been just 7.1) on my Performa 600. I remember those days, they were great. Then Windows 3.11 came out, and I became a primary DOS and Windows user. Just having popped back into the Mac scene a little, I see it HAS been awhile. OS X is good- almost making me want to buy a Mac! | |||

| My first OS was MS-DOS 3.3. The first GUI I used was Windows for Workgroups 3.11, when I got MS-DOS 6.20. Currently OpenGEM is my favourite GUI for DOS, though. |

| My first OS would definitely be Windows 3.1... I could make a case for having used DOS in school before 3.1, but all we did was type what our teacher told us to so that we could play our educational games. So yeah... first OS/GUI would be 3.1. |

| Oooh, openGEM? I found a freeGEM, but I can't seem to find much current info on it. It seems to have died in 2001. Looks like OpenGEM has some stuff happening though. Maybe that's what I'll look into. Now that I've rediscovered GEM, I *have* to get it running on something, for sheer nostaliga sake.  I also noticed last night that I seem to revisit GEM roughly every decade. First in the mid 80's, then again in the mid 90's (I found the floppies and ran it on some machines at school) and again now. Weird.... |

I actually downloaded openGEM. Hell I fire up my 486 just for using that program. I hope the HD is still ok on that computer, not like I had any problems but you never know... I hit it a few time with my foot by mistake  , but I heard that computers are very durable.I think that openGEM runs nicely on FreeDOS or on a random MS-DOS version. I think... I do have the last version of MS-DOS somewhere. |
