I saw that last night after linking to the article on the MSN downtime in Hardware / Software. The idea behind it is good; they want to be able to keep track of where the students are, and whether they're attending their classes and such, but like the two of you, I don't like how they did it In the picture on the page, it looks like the girl's wearing a camera around her neck You'd think by now, it'd be possible to make something that was flat enough to be slipped under your shirt, or put in your pocket or something. My opinion on the largeness of it, is that if they made it smaller, it would be less noticeable, and there probably wouldn't be as many complaints coming from the students, since they'd almost forget it was there at times. As far as the 'making sure students are where they're supposed to be' bit, what happened to things like attendance lists? Sure, it might take the teachers a minute or two to go through a list of students that are supposed to be in their class, and make sure they're there, but the students' privacy also has to be taken into consideration When it comes to things like vandalism happening on the school grounds, it could be useful to find out exactly who was responsible, but that's the only thing I can think of that it's good for. Maybe they should've considered only using this for students that were suspect of skipping classes, vandalism, or other things like that. Of course, the superintendent of the schools there sounds like someone who believes he's doing the best for everyone, and won't hear otherwise. It wouldn't surprise me if they started losing an increasing number of students in the coming years. Then again, going to a different school would be pretty much useless if it starts getting used everywhere. Sort of like what Smallhacker said, this is another reason why I'm glad I'm not in school right now If this were to eventually be brought here, I wouldn't go back. |

If they want to prevent vandalism, maybe they need to stop being so lazy and make an actual effort to stop it from happening? Washroom sign-out sheets would work just fine if they were actually enforced. | |||

i read about this yesterday in my local newspaper. I think this goes a little overboard. It is already bad enough that kids have to wear ID badges but to embed them with RFID. doesn't matter where go, they'll find you. on other thing is this only works for as long as the kid has the ID badge. If the kid doesn't have the ID badge, then well--it's all for nothing... |

I wonder what they'd do if someone removed the transmitter but wore the badge Anyway, this is complete BS. Cameras (more effective, usually) are better than those, since you can't really remove a camera and installing them would cost less anyway. I just can't believe these idiots went through with it, but then again -- the superintendant is getting $$$$$ for it, and if it goes with other schools, he'll get tons of $$$$. Money is the root of all evil |

Hehe, that'd be fun. Just find out how it transmits the ID number and make something to broadcast craploads of random numbers all over the place. Originally posted by Trapster |

Wow I'm just glad they only have the ID rule to keep it on your person at the middle and high school here. The time when we had to wear them around our necks and be visible was fricken insane. I'm just glad then went back to old way where we keep them with us but don't have to wear them. I can just see the kids at the high school revolting if this ever happened. They kind of did when I was there when we had to wear our IDs around our necks with the picture visible. I can surely say that there was a lot of detensions at the time. I heard about this not too long ago.. that must suck for the students. My school doesnt make us wear our ID cards, but we must have them with us at all times. I remember not too long ago they were talking about making it manitory to have them visible at all times, but it never happened. My school did, however, install cameras in every classroom, hallway, and outdoor area to be monitored at all times. Morons punching holes into the walls, tagging with sharpies in the hallway when nobody was around, ect. They now have eyes on us at all times. Its sort of awkward. And I never thought about what they did with the locker rooms.. There better not be cameras in there. Thats just wrong. X( Aside from cameras, they have staff that drive around in little golf carts and practically run you over, picking random kids who look like they might not be going to class and making them show ID. Yeah they spent the thousands of dollars needed to install the system, and now they bitch about being poor and not being able to afford enough books for all the students. How intelligent. |

I heard that many schools in the US have security guards too, just becuse of the school shootings. ...jay for the safety in Sweden. There is some vandalism, as it's generally unavoidable. But usually just some graffeti here and there, none getting hurt or anything. Besides it could be noted that drug usage is low around here. If they did install cameras, then damn... I would be paranoid. XD |

At Foothill (aka "Foo Hill", becasue one day the T was removed) they have their own school police So yeah, here we do have them. And the worst part is, more money's spent on them than most school staff xD |

Ah yes. I remember the school police. When I first got to my school, my school had what amounts to its own permanent drug squad. Its gone now...But it was hilarious to walk down the hall and see a fully armed SWAT officer once and a while. The ID cards with the barcode = good thing. The motion tracking censors from HELL is a bad thing. |

The rival school across town is so messed up with gangs and crap that they have police officers (real ones, not staff from the school) on campus at all times. Probably 6 or 7 just walking the campus, with guns and all. I guess its better than resorting to cameras and detectors on every kid. |
