There could be some slight truth to this in some cases. In OoT for example, the name entry screen can't fit all of Hiragana and Katakana on one screen, so there are some buttons added to choose between the two (and English as well). Someone who didn't know the difference might think this was some special feature. (Indeed, if you could use English letters in the Japanese version, why can't you use Japanese letters in the English version? ) This holds true if you use the Gameshark code on the English version to change it to Japanese, there are actually some slight changes:
-Alphabet select as mentioned
-Obviously some dialog re-worked to fit the larger font
-Some camera angles are changed? I have no idea why, but they are... Most noticeably the scene where you get the Fairy Ocarina.
-Added text on the title screen. Come to think of it, I have a screenshot (a real graphic memory dump from a real N64 cart, US V1.2):

Now I'm not the best at reading Japanese (yet ) and the glow effect really does not help (how can you people read these characters so distorted like that?) but as best I can tell it says "ze ru da no ho ?? ?? no o ka ri na". I don't recognize the 2 middle characters (not even with the glow, I just don't see anything with that shape ) but my best guess is they're some sort of Kanji meaning 'time', that or I just need more practice. So it's "Ocarina of [something] of Zelda", in other words, just the game's title. (Poo, I was hoping it would say something cool like "insert disk". )

Also, the 'triforce under the courtyard' thing is basically just another one of those rumours... All you're really seeing is the one on Link's hand. Also I always found those ones for Pok

No it wasn't possible in green, unless your trying to be sarcastic here. :/

But well, there is one way. Go here and check Mew glitch FAQ.

It's bringing back memories.

...and apparently there is a alternate version of the glitch which works the same, instead of fly you use teleport with abra.

Japanse OOT have a diffren great fairie, why is beyond me why they changed.

Somewhere around either 32767 or 2147483647 depending whether the lap counter is 16 or 32 bits. (It should be 8, yeah, but it's not. ) You'll lose of course, but if you did it in Time Trial, your lap times for laps 2 and 3 would be zero. And you'd be a total geek who needs to go outside.
A simpler one I heard about was that going backwards over the finish line in first place would credit you with two first-place wins (for the purposes of scoring). I heard it from a good friend, but I've never tested it. Supposedly you get the win when you go over the line, then your character goes forward, turns around, and goes across the finish line again, crediting you again.

Yeah, but it only works in VS mode. Plus you have to be far enough ahead to be able to stop and back across the line anyway.

Regarding Mew, I've heard all sorts of rumours that he and other secrets were available through button codes in the Japanese versions, though I've never made any attempt to verify them. Maybe when someone makes a flash cart and GB emu for DS, I'll load up the Japanese version of one of those old games and check it out. Could be a fun way to get used to the language.

I used Gameshark on Pokemon Red and actually found the truck, but there was no way to move it. Why do you torment us so?

I heard that they actually added a item ball there in the fire red/leaf green beside the truck. It's still there but have a item ball for people checking it out.

And it's not Mew thought.

Button codes, well. Goldeneye have tons of Button-codes but rare didn't reveal them until a hacker found some of them. They felt pressured to release them all.

Quote from GameSpot
Pickup Truck Next to S.S.Anne
If you use surf on the right of the harbor ( the walkway between the sailor that checks your ticket and the ship it self) and keep going to the right with surf, you'll see a pickup truck on a new harbor. If you go down to the bottom of the harbor and check around on the floor, you'll find a lava cookie! The way you do this is, DON'T go on the S.S.Anne, and DON'T Recieve CUT from the captain. You must recieve cut from a pokemon traded from a friend who has CUT, or get a friend who has CUT to teach one of your pokemon CUT. This way, it won't be nessesary to go on the S.S Anne. Later on when you learn surf, come back and the ship will still be there. Now you'll be able to use surf on the right of the harbor connecting to the S.S.Anne. Keep surfing right and you'll find the pick up truck
That

But well... if I remember right Lava cookies are buyable in Ruby/Sapphire, and they're functions as full heal. Not that too special... unless they changed it's function in Firered/Leafgreen.

IIRC thought.

I remember a bunch of "tricks" in Pokemon Snap on how to get the rest of the 150 Pokemon. I believed them... ...until I tried it for myself. The Goldeneye codes were fun.
