Apparently there is a public sculpture that members of the public aren't allowed to photograph!

The sculpture is in Chicago, in Millennium Park and taxpayers paid a few million for it -- and despite that, they still aren't allowed to photograph it.

The reason being that it's apparently a copyrighted sculpture. Chicago is even spending money policing people who try to take a photo of the publically funded sculpture. The artists's sold his art to the City, but he says nobody is allowed to photograph it....

Sounds pretty stupid to me. If it's public art, it should be available for that kind of thing. Particularly as the public paid for it!

Simple, stand back really far, get a zoom camera, and whala, illegal picture.

Yeah it is stupid, and people are stupid, just the way the world works I guess. Don't worry about it, after the city sees that it is a waste, they'll let people take pictures.

Hah, it'd be like sniping, but with a camera.

What is it a sculpture OF? If the ban has something to do with what it's a sculpture of, then that would be an explanation.

hmm...i wonder if somebody can sue to overturn that. I wonder who would win. I think in some ways, it is a good idea because it may give people an excuse to go to Chicago (very unlikely though). But I think overall it is stupid because if the public paid for it, the public owns it, so therefore if the general public wants to be able to photograph it, they should be able to...

What about satalites taking pictures of the area? Are they suddenly not allowed to to that?

I heard about this awhile ago. Seems that someone got sued for entering a picture that had the statue in it in to a photo contest, but won the suit because it wasn't specifically of the sculpture, or something to that effect (assuming we're talking about the same thing, which isn't guaranteed since no link to an article was provided.)

I would so try and take a picture of this. It could be me driving by and taking a picture, running past stopping then taking picture, satalite imaging... I would think of some way to get the picture. Anyways what is the picture of?

What is the name of the sculpture? I think it would be cool trying to get a photo of it. Do what Randy said, run past, stop real fast and take a picture, then keep running.

I'm going into the opposite direction, public domain art.

I mean, many artists are protecting their art by fangs and claws, but I would go in the oppsite direction. If more people know about my art, then more people will enjoy it.

I'm not saying that all artists should release all their work free, but they could do some of it. And art that is outdoors in the middle of a town square or something... shouldn't really be copyrighted like that. Now that's just wrong.

It's the same about the eiffel tower at night, it's copyrighted at the night I just read... You aren't allowed to photograph it at the night. Now that's just screwed up, considering that the Eiffel tower was built during the industrial age...

It'd be funny if someone like A Current Affair did a story on this, and got sued for it. Or even if they said "For copyright reasons we can't show you the sculpture."

But seriously, that's just stupid. If they're that protective of if it, it shouldn't even be outdoors

heh...i doubt any judge around the country would take on this civil suit

but yeah, i can understand if certain religious places don't want pictures to be taken but for something that is outdoors, how can you stop people? Unless they have a guard there 24/7, some one will be able to take a photo...

Makes me wonder, what else that sculptor has done.

You're not allowed to photograph it, but did the artist say anything about video taping it? If not, just pull still frames from the video, and instant legal pictures.
