I use b/c I roll my eyes a lot in real life, I also shift them to the right when something seems stupid to me, or annoying. So the is a mirror image of that.

I use , since generaly most smiles face that direction...er. like, : ), : P, > _ >...they all more or less are facing to the right, you don't see like q: or (: for example...but perhaps thats just me. Then there's smiles like ^ _ ^ which don't have a direction, since its a frontal view...but now I'm getting a little too into this, so I'll stop

When you look at the big picture....all smilies are home-made ones. Unless you make it at school...or work, then you would have to change the name to which one that suits the location in which you made the smile.
