So, what do you prefer? I've heard all sorts of compelling arguments from the "experts" ("shutting down saves electricity, but puts extra strain on your hard drives," that sort of thing), but I figured I'd ask the "average" computer user what they do, and why.

A brief explanation of the choices:

Shut down/hibernate: You completely shut down your computer whenever you're done using it, or at the end of the day. This includes "hibernate" mode, which saves the contents of RAM to the hard drive and then shuts down the computer.
Leave running: Just as it says. You leave your computer fully up and running 24/7, only shutting it down when necessary (lightning storms, hardware upgrades, repairs, etc.)
Standby: This one falls somewhere between the first two, as it basically leaves your computer running, but shuts down hardware that's not in use (like your hard drives and monitor).

Personally, I leave my computers running all the time. I used to shut them down every time I was done using them, until my primary computer developed a strange tendency to not turn back on unless I cycled the power several times. I eventually replaced the power supply, which solved the problem, but I've still preferred to leave my computers on ever since. That way, they're always ready to use, and I'm not putting any unnecessary strain on my components by continuously cutting and reapplying power (this is especially bad for hard drives in the long run). I power off the monitor and (sometimes) the speakers, but that's it.

I shut off my comp right before bed and usually put it on when I get up. So it's just on when I need it. My fan sounds like fuck too, so I don't really want to have it on during the night unless it's an emergency.

I, or whoever else is on it at the end of the day shuts down the computer before they go to bed most of the time. We've left the computer on for a couple days a few times before, but my Dad has it through his head that leaving the computer on all the time isn't good for it, and thus won't let us do that unless we have a really good reason for it

If I had the choice though, I'd leave it on all the time, pretty much for convenience's sake

I keep my computer turned on, that's way I can log everything on IRC.

Althought I kinda notice when it's time for a restart, Win XP have been little strange about a few things right now...

Hell, I have two computers turned on all the time. And one of them is in my room. The computer fan is annoying at first, but you get quickly adjusted to it.

I always shut down the computer since it costs my parents money--although they don't complain when i run it overnight sometimes. But anyways, I guess if I lived on my own, I probalby wouldn't do the same since I don't have anything that requires the computer to be on. Plus, I'm around computers all day so I don't have a need to have it on all day.

I shut it down entirely a good time before going to bed, since it is in my bedroom, and I don't want to sleep in the same room as a running computer.

I always leave it on (mostly for IRC and acmlm.cjb.net), only turning off the screen ... the instant availability is always nice to have, and I rarely have to reopen all the programs and files ... and the fan is quite silent on this computer, so it doesn't annoy me at all when I sleep

... and then there's my grandparents who shut down their computer whenever they get off for a while, which can be several times per day

Unless you have something that needs to run, hibernation rocks. It's more or less instantaneous for most computers, you're back where you started in less time.

I shut down my computer every evening/night fully - if I'm not lazy via Windows key, arrow up, arrow key right and enter.
If I'm lazy, I simply push the mechanical power button.

My computer is not that loud, but you hear the fan running, although it is a regulated one like in most newer computers. And I don't NEED the computer when I'm sleeping, especially because it stands in the same room my bed is in - and also I won't risk to lose it while it is stormy outside, a cable defect etc. (if fire eats up the computer its data are anyway lost - but then there's backups I make every two weeks)

If I'm going to be away for 0-30 minutes, I leave it as it is.
If I'm going to be away for half an hour to an hour, I put it in standby mode.
If I'm going to be away for longer than an hour, I put it in hibernate mode.
I'm almost never shutting it down normally.

I shut it down whenever I'm not using it (sleeping, mostly) because the electricity bill affects me directly. Depending on the activity of jupiter or something I might shut down or hibernate. I've never had any luck with standby on this computer, it likes to wake up immediately.

It does have an odd behavior when I turn it on, which might be related to what BMF was talking about.. if it's been off but plugged in for a long time, when I start it up the lights blink and then it won't do anything. I have to do that, then unplug it (or turn off the power strip) for about thirty seconds, then plug it in and turn it on. (It doesn't work to unplug it before I let it blink the lights, it's like it needs to discharge or something.) It doesn't develop this problem if it's not plugged in while off, so I turn the power strip off too when shutting down.

This thing goes 24/7. Probably not a good thing, but then it's stayed pretty well off for the past 4 years.

Most of the reason I keep it on is for net updates and having this thing scan every so often when it's supposed to (when no one uses it most times, like 4 AM).

I tend to go back and forth between using Hibernate mode (boots up in about 6 seconds ) and just leaving it on. Right now I usually leave it on unless I'm having trouble sleeping and the fan's keeping me awake. Mostly because I like to leave BitTorrent running to seed whatever anim

I leave mine on most of the time with a restart every few days. I have a ThermalTake LanFire case, the front LED bezel light thing is always on and is bright as hell. That along with the fan controller LED creates one bright light, its almost like a night light.

Yeah, that happens. It destroyed two modems before I thought to get a surge protector with a phone line in/out. 'Course, it doesn't matter since I'm not a filthy unwashed modem user anymore.

I shut mine off after every period of using it. I can't sleep with it on because it's simply too loud (PSU and two cooling fans + original Athlon + 3 years old = lots of air attempting to escape) to sleep next to.
Also, as many people will testafy to, running XP along with WindowBlinds, occasionally Adobe Photoshop and a few other programs that may/may not memory leak, you simply cannot keep a seasoned installation of XP going for more than a few days anyway (although it is possible IF you keep the programs you instal down to a complete minimum).

I leave both of my machines running (GNU/Linux Slackware 10, and Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2) at all times. The only real problem I have with it is that Windows wants me to restart (or forces me to do so) at an interesting interval of ~4-5 weeks. This upsets me because, as I have mentioned, I wish to keep the machine running at all times.

As of the time of this post, my Windows machine has been running approximately 1 week, 5 days, 18 hours, 28 minutes, and 23 seconds. My GNU/Linux machine has been running for approximately 2 weeks, 6 days, 16 hours, 12 minutes, and 30 seconds. Just about the same amount of time the Operating System has been installed, give or take a few days (in this case, it's certainly "give" -- but you get the idea).
