The new US Secretary of Education was sworn into today and already as caused a ruckus before being officially sworn in. Apparently, she voiced concerns of an episode in a children's program aired on PBS called "Postcards from Buster". One of the episodes featured a child introducing her parents to the main character. These two parents are lesbian partners. However, the episode was not about same sex relationships. Nevertheless, the secretary stated she had "very serious concerns".

So, what do you think about that? Should children's programming be devoid of anything related to same sex relationships or otherwise? After a few posts, I'll voice my opinion.

Here is the article for those you want to know more: Children's TV fears a funding flap after 'Buster'

Fuck the fundies.

Until the extremists who declare the impropriety of homosexuality realize that these people do exist and many of them can easily build up loving family units, they don't deserve much in the way of respect. The basic devoidance of human rights it absolutely disgusting and the removal of equality is a serious threat to everyone, no matter who it happens to.

Well, my gut reaction to that is bad, but when you start seeing it in a broader context, if there are going to be more and more gay partners with kids, their kids are going to be thinking, "Well why aren't there any families like ours on TV?" What it comes down to is having your lifestyle banned from TV...

I've a feeling if that gets nixed maybe you'd start to see more networks for gays, with "special" children's programming. Segregated TV? I mean, same sex marriage seems really weird to me, and I'm sure a lot of people feel that way too, though they might not condemn it. It'll be interesting how this all develops over the next few decades.

It [SSM] is (thank God) becoming law in Canada this week. That or our country's parliament is going to dissolve and we get to go through another election and my party will gain more seats because the reactionist CPC twits are losing ground because strategic voting is no longer worthwhile.

As long as the SSM issue exists, it proves that fundamentalism is gaining too much power within a secular society. As this occurs (even a CATHOLIC can see this) we will be faced with more movements that question the basic fundamentals of Western ideals. Where does freedom end? Should everyone be equal? It is a frightening prospect when you think about it. If they oppress the gays like this by libelling their lifestyle, who knows what will happen...Muslims and people of Middle Eastern descent are already widely persecuted in America (and the trend is moving more and more into Canada). And in reaction, political Islam (which is VERY anti-secular and oppressive) is gaining credence.

To keep it short, I keep my rosary away from Basic Politics and Human Rights 101 book. The fundies should keep their KJVB away from the US constitution and keep their fucked ideas about morality out of the bedroom.

Ziff, sometimes you just sum up everything so well.

Really, it shouldn't matter. People do this because they are focused only on negative things and never look at both sides. Polotics is just a bunch of bullshit people thinking they are important. They try to press their beliefs on other people having the attitude that they are always right. They can never accept being wrong or stopping and seeing if they are doing something smart. They lie, they persecute, they pretend to care, and yet, people don't see through the act. Rich people shouldn't be running our government, and niether should any other group, but a mixture of all people. It would stop stuff like this from happening.

I don't think homosexuality needs to be in childrens programming.... I'm assuming we are talking about PBS aged kids.... that's like <5 years old...

there is enough "adult" programming with homosexuality in it already, we don't need to shove it down our kids throats too....

oh and Ziff, not everyone is happy about the same sex marriage policy in Canada.... or at least, the potential change.... I think it is a very bad idea.... but that's just me.... and since I disagree with it, I'm just a religious backwater bigot who is against human rights and all that

Not everyone is, but due to the current sitting of the seats, the majority representation in Canada wants it to go through. Just like in television...Children need to be educated. They need to be taught that some kids are going to have two mummies or two daddies. Or daddy may become a woman. Kids need to understand that if they feel attracted to to the same sex when they hit puberty, there is nothing wrong with it. Basic human rights need to be observed and acted upon. In this instance, it is the education about homosexuals that is going to help and better society. Why be a propenent of bigotry, hatred and unfairness when we can sever an artery and let a limb of prejudice die?

And yes, you are a back water bigot, if you want to use those terms.

okay, we are talking about 4 year old kids.... I really don't think they need to be educated about homosexuality at that age.... they don't even understand sexuality at that age...

I would say at least wait until about 10.... because until then kids don't care about sex....

well, I just don't think TV should be doing the teaching.... I think that is what my main objection is....

see, I personally doubt that if the vote was given to the actual population of Canada, and not the "representation".... that it wouldn't pass....

just because 150 people agree with it, that supposedly represent the views of half the population does not mean that at least half agrees with it....

and has no one realized what the conservative side wants? the conservative side wants marriage for men and women, and a "same sex union" of some sorts, that isn't called marriage, for the same sex unions....

I'm not quite sure why marriage needs to change if the conservative government will give that to same sex couples

They aren't saying "now these two men eat other's asses like boston cream donuts" or "only the wife of a man can get a white liquid temporary pearl necklace". They are telling kids to be accepting of different family scenarios. And be damned if I cared about sex when I was 10. I hadn't even had secondary sexual attributes appear until a few years after that. It isn't that the kids don't care about sex, there aren't graphic depictions of what gays do in the bedroom. It is about teaching tolerance.

The Conservative side has been realized, and given the vocalization that they present (minus Belinda Stronach) they aren't gaining any friends in this fight. In fact, I wonder why people fight this. Marriage in and of itself is a fairly multi-religious and secular event joining two loving people. The exclusivity that the Conservatives are casting over it kind of ruins that.

Gay people = straight people. Marriage = marriage. Plain and simple. Equal rights for all, no exceptions.

Given the last Ipsos-Reid polls, approx. 60% of Canadians support SSM. That means more than half of Canada supports it.

If it isn't, then by all means do what you will.

Unfortunately, it is on the charter of rights and freedom.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but with things I hear like about separation of church and state, what's the reasoning behind banning same sex marrage besides "My religion says it is wrong"? I haven't read up much and I just wanted to ask. Also from what I heard all that was said in this episode was something like "Here is my mom, and my stepmom." and "Wow, you have a lot of mothers!", though I may be wrong.

"In the 40 Buster episodes that were made, families have included Muslims, Orthodox Jews, Mormons and evangelical Christians. "The show is about children," Sullivan says. "It's not about their parents. It's about letting children validate children as children, regardless of the family they live in." "

The evil and vile content of the show. JEWS. I can't believe they'd let kids learn about people with different faiths on national television!

geeogree, it is an a amendment protecting basic human rights. If you're looking over the repatriated edition, you'll be loth to find it.

They have to learn about the concept somehow. I think that as long as you show it in a way that the children will understand without forcing any beliefs on them, it should be all right. Given that it's PBS, you could also plug the website and encourage parents/children to look at the material together.

Ziff - I'm more concerned about the Mormons. Seriously, I think it's great that a children's show promotes different cultures and faiths. That's what they should do.

What do you mean about "worse things than the Mormons in this world..."? I would just like some clarification on this statement.

Colleen, I totally agree. The only way to smack down intolerance is to teach people from the crib that different cultures and different religions are way rad and cool.
