well that explains alot about my parents. I actually knew about the long term effects of smoking pot before this thread. my parents both smoke and have smoked since they were in their teens (both now 50 yrs old), and they are both extreemly paraniod, and have regular bouts with depression that have no cause that can relate to their lives. This debate/discussion is flawed just like the cigarette debates side effects happen to some people and not others

cigs--- heart attacks stroke lung canger - happen to some people but not all
just like smoking pot may effect some people, but again not everyone reacts to it the same way

It's a pity, tobacco used to be a great psychoactive until the late 1800s when whitey decided to be a fuckwit and start breeding it for quantity rather than quality. Incidentally, the strongest strains had the highest amounts of tars (anti-fungal, etc. compounds) that negatively effect our health. But mind you, other forms of tobacco are still grown and are closer to the strains that the Amerindians smoked. And they did it without arsenic and other poisons.

Some of my family have been doing it since before I was born and nothing is wrong with them. They smoke it quite freaquently to, more than once a day. Nothing is wrong with them, they are all normal.

Really... it is kind of wierd, my family is the only family I know that smokes pot, but all my friends hate their families. So, I'm happiest with my family out of all of my friends, yet mine break the law.

Of course it effects people differently Nick, but on the average person it isn't going to be bad. We aren't talking about special cases. (at least I don't think)

I get it now. UPI = subsidary of Universal Press Syndicate.

Basically, this is one of O'Reilly's/Limbaugh's/Coulter's "let's hate non-jingoistic people who have dissentive thoughts" sites that drones on and on about the evils of this that and the other thing.

Just to reiterate -- Pot can NOT cause schizophrenia. The most I've heard from any true scientific source is that it may bring out symptoms -- in those who already have it.

My stance on pot is that I don't care if you do it, I don't mind at all. Just don't abuse it, don't become reliant upon the stuff to get through your day.

That could be one reason, but there are plenty of other reasons why people do it. Some people do it because there's nothing better to do. Some people do it because of a social thing. There are plenty of reasons to do it other than emotional instability.

I smoke pot... often in fact. I'm emotionally stable and I have a fine grip on reality. I do it because I like being stoned. Nothing else about it.

or because it makes you feel good.

just in the way that eating donuts tastes good, but isn't necessarily the most healthy thing for you.

too many donuts, sweets, or whatever has adverse effects, such as weight gain. being overweight is bad for your.

just like too many donuts, too much pot can be bad for you.

it's really not more complicated than that. if you don't have the will power to say no to something that makes you feel good but is bad for you too often, then you probably shouldn't be smoking pot and eating donuts.

This thread goes against the few things that I've been taught about drugs, that you should never do them and they are evil and will kill you. I still don't plan to do them, but I sorta guiltilly am more curious about them like what the people feel like when "stoned", all I've heard is that it messes your brain up and makes you see things melt and stuff like that.

Ah, pot, I knew ye well.

I smoked pot for about four or five years, from 9 or 10 to about 13 or 14 or 15 (my memory isn't the best, but it was like that to begin with ). Yes, mighty young for it, but it was always with my sister and her friends who were pretty well all three or more years older than me.

Why'd I start? I won't say peer presure, because that would be false. They weren't like "Hey, Josh, come smoke some weed with us! You're not cool if you toke up!" or anything retarded like those public service announcements want you to think people say. I was just like, "Eh, might as well try it." So I did.

Why'd I quit? Well, that's a little more complicated. Part of it had to do with a change of locale. In Richardson (part of Dallas, where we lived when I started) my sister's friends were pretty cool. However, I didn't like the people she hung out with in Chickasha (where we eventually moved for a few years). Being as my sister and her friends were my source, not wanting to hang out with her friends meant not smoking. Another part of it had to do with my asthma. My asthma wasn't ever bothered by smoking pot, but it was bothered by cigarettes (coincidentally, it was the first time I tried a cigarette that caused us to find out I had asthma in the first place). It seemed that everyone that smoked pot also smoked cigarettes (not as much so in Richardson as in Chickasha, but still to some degree) and some of their houses I could barely stand to enter even if nobody was home. Yet another part of my quitting had to do with the stereotypical image pot smokers tend to have. Which is to say, being idiots. While I was certainly an idiot before I started (ye gods, I wish my memory were worse so I could forget), my brain had finally kicked into gear long before I quit. Did the pot help in my transformation from dumbass to genius? Not my place to say, but it did help me with my ability to focus my thoughts.

To develope on that last point... Before you say anything on the long-term affects of pot on the human mind, consider this. Before pot I was a complete idiot who lazied my way through school and barely got by with Cs and Ds. Now I'm a straight-A/As-&-Bs student who recently scored a 32 on his ACT. The last IQ test I took (official, issued by the school's academic team coach, not one of these stupid online ones) I scored well into the genius level. And that was when I was still smoking.

Just a random observation... the people I know who have used pot in the past have admitted to me that they're better off without it.

It's just interesting to see the different views on the topic, and I'm happy to see that the thread actually turned into a good discussion.

JD, I too have a pot story. Except that it runs with concurrence in education rather than the after effects. My grades are almost always 80s and 90s nowadays. Incidentally, I've upped the ante on my drug-use (I'll admit that I use a varied array and assortment of drugs). The problem isn't so much that I do drugs, but as my mom and dad can tell you...I've never really been a motivated person, and god-damn. I love sleep. So the differences that people generally see in those two trends is somewhat negligible. Lately I've been getting a shitload more sleep than I have for the past 2 years and I've been slightly more motivated. This smaller motivation has culminated into my holding an elected position within my political party, doing better in relevant courses at school, my rejoining of the Roman Catholic Church, my now constant wishes for change in the Canadian government and of course working with the Greyhound Relocation and Adoption Canada organization. I'm not going to say that marijuana caused me to do these things, because it didn't. But the mixture of me growing up ever so slightly, my open-mindedness to various issues and a few other points may have been sped along because of pot and other drugs.

Why not Nebetsu?

Because some people have weird sexual habits. Does that mean they shouldn't do it? (sans paedophiles). Because some people have bizzare religious rites, like eating flesh and drinking blood...Should they do it?

Nebetsu, before you go and tell people what they should/shouldn't do with their bodies, you should understand the issue. From what I gather, you don't really understand too much about marijuana and the cannabis culture as it stands.
