It'd be a little pretentious to state that I'm a bassist. However, I love the instrument. I play in a cover band as a weekend job. We play at local night clubs and private parties. Mainstream music, mostly.

Some sound samples and a picture of me and my bass

Speaking for Dryden, he used to play tenor sax and was even in the Florida State University marching band. Too bad he still doesn't play....would have been nice to hear it, since sax is one of my fave instruments.

Bought a handmade ocarina once, but I never got too far on playing it.

Played flute for two years, goofed around with harmonica and guitar, but never got too far with either. I want to pick up guitar again and drums would be nice.

I sing though! I've been doing that all my life and I was st the top choir in the school last year. I quit because the director left and I didn't have enough electives anyway.

interesting...i found an ocarina replica just like the one in the N64 game. My friend wanted to buy it but in the end changed his mind.

As for instruments, I played the Violin and Piano during my schooling before college.

erm...yea. I should get around to doing that...my current mic's blow ass through a tube, so I'll probably be picking up a better one before that happens

edit: I wants to buy one of these next

I HAVE ONE OF THOSE! Hah! I spent quite some time with it trying to get any tune going. It is such a piece of crap.
I used to have a recorder, I got it at this halloween festival thing my elementary school did. That was stupid.
I played Calrinet for a little while, but it would cut into my art class time, which I enjoyed more. So I dropped it.
I own a guitar, I got it two Christmases ago. I'm not really interested in playing, I have enough difficulty tuning the damn thing, and I have some bad memories associated with it.

Something that has always bothered me is how little involvement I've had with music. If I could back, I'd start an instrument at an early age.

Trombone.

Surprised some others play it. Heh.

A little while ago, at a Basketball game (The band has to go to them) I slammed a hit in the back of the head with my slide. Was going from 1st to 5th position, with some fast-based eight notes. (At about 110 beats a minute)

I couldn't play the next few songs, because I was laughing too hard.

I've been playing piano for over 20 years. I started lessons when I was four, stopped them at about age ten, and just kept working at it on my own over the years. I teach myself music by ear, and I've been writing my own "OMFG girl and teh piano!" music since before I even knew Tori Amos existed. One of my goals in life is to play as well as she does. I'm pretty good, though...I can proficiently play complex arrangements (including some of her songs - "Carbon" is my current favorite to perform) while singing. On average, it takes me about an eon and a half to finish a piece of music and lyrics because inspiration comes in fits and spurts and I'm anal about not throwing in any old garbage just to fill in the gaps, so I'm never going to make any money as a singer/songwriter. I'm just trying to finish off and polish some tunes so I can put them on teh intarweb for people to enjoy (or rip on or whatever). I do have the capability to record piano and vocals, but I haven't made recordings of some of my finished tunes because I haven't set up any music recording software on here yet (we just reinstalled Debian not too long ago) and I need to practice them more before I'll feel comfortable starting to record them.

I also play electric guitar, but at that, I'm at best decent. I can play most chord progressions, play bar chords, and do reasonable covers of simple strummy songs (e.g. R.E.M.'s "Swan Swan H"), but I just don't connect to the instrument like I connect to the piano. On piano, there's basically a direct line between the sounds in my head and the motions of my fingers, so I can do all sorts of interesting right-hand gymnastics without thinking about it much. Trying to play anything complex on guitar is a confusing jumble that I have to meticulously plan out.

Yeah, same here. My right hand can go all over the place. Scares my friends sometimes, lol. I only wish I was as good with my left hand. I'm only getting into using 4 fingers now. I think I'll download that Carbon song and see if it's within my playing skills.

I think the best thing I can play at the moment is "Numb" the piano version by Linkin Park. I got it from eDonkey by putting in "Numb Piano"

I forgot to add in my other post...I also have what's known as perfect pitch. I can identify any note (and most standard major/minor chord voicings) just by hearing it, and can usualy play any song by ear after a few listens. my music teachers all like to trick me, make me turn around and look at a wall while they play a note. Fun game for anyone with perfect pitch--try aand guess the note they play after about the 7th right answer they'll be convinced you arent cheating, and hit random notes simultaniously out of frustration, usualy followed by "BET YOU CANT GUESS THAT ONE, HUH?!" Quite humorous if you're bored

I used to play piano.

I haven't played for years though, since I moved out and my piano stayed at Mum's house.

If I had somewhere at my house to put the piano, I'd move it in a second.

Wow! That's really something, Keitaro. I have an excellent memory, I can learn something if I like it enough after hearing it just one time. But it can't be too hard ofcrouse. :p

But I don't think I could ever tone test myself like that.

I have perfect pitch, too. For me, telling notes apart is like hearing colors. It generally works well and automatically when the notes aren't extraordinarily high or low, but near the ends of the piano and beyond, they start to get ambiguous. I also get confused by notes that fall between half-steps on a standard Western scale. Trying to categorize those is rather like trying to determine whether a color is red-orange or orange-red.

I'm tone deaf and actually can't carry rhythm. Playing music is very hard for me, although time and time again I've been said that my mind concots beautiful lyrics to go with a glorious voice. A pity I guess.

The odd thing is, I can pick up and play lots of instruments and catch on kinda quick. I just can't get anything beyond "amateur" with them. It's a pity, really.

I suppose my proficiency in the trades makes up for my lack of artistry

Same here. I'm not too good playing the music itself, but if I hear a nice, but easy song, I play it right away or write down the notes.

Unlike most others, I can hear which tones that are played. If someone plays or sings a tone, I always know which tone it is. Everybody I know wonder how I even can do that, but I find it pretty easy.

mm...that's how I see it too, pretty much...only other way to describe it..especialy since people always ask me how I do it and I can never quite describe it well enough, but what you said pretty much hits the nail on the head

I play with myselfI used to play the piano, but I sucked at mapping the notes to the actual keys, so I lagged like a tenth of a second between every key.
