In Firefox and maybe other browsers, if something doesn't load, you can't scroll past that point until it does load. If this happens with someone's layout when I'm viewing a thread, I'm inclined to block it. The problem is, when you go to their profile, the block layout link is at the bottom of the page, under their layout. If their layout doesn't load, you can't access the link! So you have to go to anybody's profile with a layout that does load, copy the link for block layout, and replace the user id. I'd like to suggest maybe having the block layout link at the top of the profile.

That's a good idea.

But you can just do http://board.acmlm.org/blocklayout.php?action=block&id=X if you can't get to the bottom of the page.

Yeah but that is a slight inconvinience. Plus, if that was the only method, what would be the point of having the link?

I was just about to make a suggestion on this.

Yeah, you can (And I ultimately did) use the method described above, but it is inconvenient, and I honestly think you're overestimating the intelligence of the general population if you think they'll be able to figure that out.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Perhaps you should tr.......nevermind. Here I thought he said he was using IE...

I doubt moving the link would be accepted by the admins, since they want their tools at the bottom of the page.

I honestly have no viable solution to try and solve this.

See, this is what disgusts me. People automatically assuming that any sort of problem is a result of IE and not any other browser fault.

I was essentially throwing your common response in your faces in the exact same way you do it to others. IE does osmething wrong, tell them to use Firefox. Firefox has a problem, whoops, that sucks, guess Firefox wasn't God like we thought it was. I win.

Same thing happens with both IE and Firefox when it comes to CSS layouts. It's CSS layouts who have that behavior both in IE and Firefox.

Althought IE takes alot of longer time to load CSS layouts than Firefox. A certain thread took forever in IE to load but it loaded quickly in Firefox. Then Firefox do have a better cache system than IE, while I have no idea about Opera but Opera should also have a superior caching system to IE too.

...and yes, they should move the block layout link.

I think the reason why broken CSS layouts take so long time to load, most of the tme the CSS layout is hosted on the same host right? Well I think that both IE and Firefox devolopers didn't think about the possiblity of messageboard users using it.

...wasn't there plans for making CSS files uploadable to the board server or something?

You forget though, IE will eventually give up and display the page anyway (I should know, it's happened to me many times) ... evidently for Firefox users, it won't even start

And as for the thread loading thing, Kitten Yiffer, servers will sometimes be slow. Not to mention, since you use Firefox 99.99% of the time, IE won't have anything cached, so of course it's going to be slow. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE

Anyway, Opera kicks all of your asses. Broken CSS? No problem, just display it as if it wasn't needed until it loads! (not to mention it's at version 7-something, and has been going on for a lot longer, so there's naturally going to be a lot less errors)

Oh, wait, I'm turning this into a browser discussion. Whups.

We had that on Erk's server, but nobody's bothered to implement it here. Basically each account (though it was separate from the board) was given 2MB of space for layouts, images, and what have you. Pretty nice, actually, since my host tends to go down every now and then.

XK, for once, you may be right. It'd be nice to see this sort of 'timeout' implimented in Mozilla. I'm not sure exactly what causes it to hang, though, but I think it occurrs when the server accepts the connection but doesn't reply. (I made a little web server program once, and if I did that, it would just keep waiting and waiting... )

Noone's suggested a location for a "block layout" link that would make sense given the location of the rest of the links down there. Move it to the top? Some people unhinged when we moved the "send private message" link to the left edge instead of the right edge. It's indeed doable, but it's not the way it works anywhere else, nor does it make sense.

We're debating right now how CSS should be implemented. Text area? (Like bio, sig, header) Include this external CSS file? (Like minipic, avatar) Use this uploaded CSS file? (Like, uh, nothing) Maybe we'll end up with a mix of a text area and an external file field and just block inline includes. This way we could even move the stylesheets to the top of the page in thread pages and make it load them all and not halt the page layouting process.

Making other material uploadable is a practical no-no unless it's very small and strictly whitelisted (text files and images, basically). We won't want people abusing this to host anything else than layout files.

Why not just put block layout by Link and Quote?

Because it doesn't belong there. By that logic, why don't put Send PM there?

I was going to suggest that, actually. Put some more useful links up there, or in the 'user' area on the left, like Send PM, Email, Block Layout and so on.

As far as CSS, uploading seems like the best way functionality-wise, but probably also the least secure. Having it a separate text field and putting it all in the header or some such could work, but that would make the code really messy... Maybe a combination? Copy and paste it into a text field, and the board automatically dumps it into a file; this way you don't have any sort of control over the file's name, path, etc, you just get to put whatever text you want in a CSS file named after your user ID.

Why keep all the stuff in a database and the CSS in a file?

I'm with HyperHacker's suggestion on this: put PM and Block Layout links in the area with the user name.

So that you can link to it instead of having to spit out the entire CSS into every post.

You mean, so they could be @included or linked to? It may seem counter-intuitive, but that would probably be easier if they kept the CSS in the database and had a php file that output the appropriate information when given an argument, such as userid. Like, userstyle.php?id=282 for example. This would avoid a lot of messy file-reading and -writing.

EDIT: and, of course, this php file would have something like header('Content-type: text/css') so that everyone is happy.

Yeah, the links need to be moved to the top of the page. There's a reason that Edit Profile, Post Radar, etc are at the top, and for that same reason, the important links, Send PM and Block Layout, need to be at the top too.

Of course, I think that Send PM needs to be added to thread.php right by the Quote link. Makes it even handier.
