Avoid fastfoood like you avoid busses comming at you on a busy street. Just pick an alternative.. when I'm at the mall my friends get wendy's.. and I go over like 10 feet and get sushi. Cause it's delicious and like 10 times more healthy. If you can't do that, because sushi really everyone's favorite foood.. if there's a sandwitch place like Subway or something nearby grab that. It's a hundred times healthier than anything you could buy at a fast foood restaurant. McDonald's salads have just as many calories in them as their big mac. Dudes-- you have got to see Supersize Me. This one guy ate only McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner for over a month-- and he experienced massive weight gain.. a super high jump in cholesterol and his liver became fatty. So fast food.. just don't do it.. it's just as unhealthy for you as smoking can be.

I'm strange with foood. I don't eat red meat because I can't give meat up entirely-- I did that for about a year and I became ill so I needed more meats in my diet. I would be fine if the rest of my family weren't such picky eaters. If my mom cooked fish all the time I would be able to eat how I'd like but it's simply not possible in my situation.

My problem is .. I just eat too much. On a normal day I eat after school and dinner.. and then after that. So that needs to stop. I have weight training at school.. and I do circuit training. Which is pretty much low weight in high repititions.. but there's only so much you can do in like.. 20 minutes. So I'm joined a gym near my house with two friends.. so that should help. I'm not overweight.. There's chubb on my tummy that could go. Would be nice. Whatever.. I just want to maintain myself. Even if you're not overweight it's goood to work out a bit.

I love a lot of health food.. I can eat blocks of tofu just.. plain. Tofu is great. I just need some more vegan recipies.. because I freaking lovee fresh, vegitables. Once I had this portobello mushroom hamburger with peppers on it.. MmMmmmMmMMmm.. ohh mann.. ::droool::.. wow foood is great.

Health is an important factor in my life. I try to eat as much vegetable as I can. But I still eat a lot of meat. I cannot deny the fact that I was bred to be an omnivore.

My main "spiritual" diet (an odd thing for a stringent Catholic to have) really is quite eclectic. I fill it up with Asian herbs, green teas, spices, honey, etc. I just have this stuff as an aside because it seems to actually relax me. Something that nothing ever does.

Fitness wise. I used to be able to benchpress over 200 lbs. I had a strong body. Now my leg press is just over 1000 (I was originally able to do 1100) and that benchpress is just over 160. I've really weakened due to not having the ability to afford a gym membership. The chinups, running and all that other jazz doesn't cut it. Plus its winter and this always happens I intend once it gets warm out to drop these unneeded pounds. Maybe I'll finally slip under that accursed 200 line.

Do you like Japanese food? I adapted a random soup recipe that I found online into the following recipe, and I loved the way it turned out.

Basic Japanese-ish Soup

8 cups mushroom broth
3/4 pound daikon radish, peeled and chopped into small chunks
2 cups bok choy, chopped up
1 pound firm tofu, sliced
About a tablespoon of fresh ginger, minced
2 eggs, beaten
Green onions, chopped (just use however much you like as a garnish)
Sesame oil
Soy sauce

Bring the broth, daikon, and ginger to a boil and then simmer for 20 minutes or until the daikon is tender. While the daikon cooks, stir-fry the tofu over medium heat in the soy sauce and sesame oil. After it's done, bring the soup back to a boil, add the bok choy, and boil for 5 minutes. At some point while the soup is still boiling, drizzle in the beaten egg and add the tofu. Serve with green onions sprinkled on top.

This recipe makes about six hearty bowls. The soup can be refrigerated and reheated (and it tastes great as leftovers...I just had the last of this batch earlier tonight).

Notes

According to my estimates, each bowl has about 130 calories and 14 grams of protein. (This varies depending on the broth, tofu, and eggs you use. It's best to get a very firm tofu with lots of protein and little fat.) The vegetables are very low-cal, and they contain a decent amount of fiber and certain vitamins.

To make this soup vegan, simply omit the egg. Trust me, there's plenty of good stuff in there without it. Conversely, those who prefer meat can cook up some chicken or whatnot instead of tofu. I made this with mushroom broth because I don't eat meat, I didn't want to take the time to prepare my own broth (and the grocery store has a very good selection of premade soup bases in cartons), and traditional Japanese soup stock gets most of its flavor from shiitake mushrooms, so I figured it was the best choice. If you don't like the flavor of mushrooms, use a more generic vegetable broth. A meat-based broth would work as well.

Be aware that the soup is subtly flavored. Those who only like strong tastes will probably find it bland.

So what do you guys think about supplements? I'm no good at scrounging for food with the whole vegetarian thing, and I'm really suffering as far as some of my essential vitamins and minerals go, since I'm lacking iron and protein. Any suggestions?

Ha, after the whole starving incident I ended up with last year, I'm kinda wary about changing my eating habits again.

As far as fitness goes, though, there are a few things about losing weight through diet only that I can't stand. Namely, you don't really look much thinner after a while. I always feel like my skin's hanging off my bones because I've lost so much body fat. That's why I like exercising, it makes me feel like I'm not a bag of bones after a while.

I'm 15, male, about 125, and around 5'6".

I'm not sure how I manage to keep my weight so low though. I'm a lazy ass, and lacking motivation for most things....

Weird though, my body itself is fairly strong. It's my arms and legs that need work.....

Running and pushups would probably help. I dunno though, It might be a pain to explain to my Mom why I'd want to take a daily jog. She might think I'm off doing drugs or something. (My sinuses get screwed up if I run in the cold, and my eyes get bloodshot and glazed. I'm also sort of a jittery, if I try and push myself.) And it really does look like I've been doing something. O.o

My main concern is just to increase my stamina. I'm out of it fairly quickly, and a good punch to the arm or something hurts more than I think it should.

Well, I'm working on my health too lately, my new years resolution was to lose weight and get a little fitter. I don't know if I'm getting there yet or not...

I've been eating much more healthily all year, but haven't really lost any weight. I've also been eating less, as I noticed I used to eat things when I didn't really need to eat anything.

I've been starting to exercise again, but it's hard to find the time when I work full-time and come home to a messy house each day. I tell myself that housework is sort of exercise, but I know that it's not unless I decide to ... say... sweep the entire house or something strenuous like that. Dishes and a tidy up is not going to help.

I'm thinking I'm going to get an exercise bike. I can do that at home (I live in a really hilly area, so walking is a bit hard until I build up some fitness (and thus stop having asthma attacks frequently)), it's gentle exercise so I can start out nice and easy, and it'll help me lose some weight.

Once I've used that for a while, I'll go back to walking, cause I much prefer a good walk, and once I'm fit enough to deal with the hills in this area, it'll be good fun.

Sion, sorry for the late reply, but if you do those crunches that work the sides of your stomach, you can take care of the lower abs.

Basically, you just do a normal crunch, but you bring your elbow to the opposite knee of the side you're working on, and do reps of that. Switch sides when you want to do a different muscle.

It also helps if you do leg lifts instead of crunches. Just lay flat on your back and lift your legs a few inches off the ground, and hold them there. To do reps, just spread your feet to about shoulder length (SLOWLY; if you do it fast it kinda loses the toning effect), and then close them as fast as you spread them with. Trust me, it's a hellish exercise, but after a while, wehn you get used to it, you start to really see results.

I have difficulties working my lower abs too, though. Sometimes these exercises just don't work. If anyone's got any other suggestions, I get the feeling I won't be the only one grateful for them.

Ah, and now that I think of it, this isn't really to do with food and fitness, but do any of you have an opinion in regards to medications and perscription drugs?

Well, this is a "Health, Food and Fitness" thread, so prescription drugs fit in fine

Personally, I'd try to take as little as possible if you can... although that's something I find hard to do myself (seeing how I go once I lose some weight I should be able to get off the tummy calmer-downer-ers). Reason being, it's all gotta be processed by your liver at some point, so the less the better I guess.

Wee -- I've been doing more walking around here at lunctimes. I keep feeling a little dizzy afterwards, but apparently that's cause I don't give myself an adequate "cool down".

I am also craving chocolate. So I'm going to eat some, just only a *little* bit, not a lot of it....

I'm going to get bathroom scales tonight too. I wanna know how much of a fatarse I am.

I also bought "French Women Don't Get Fat". I wanna find out more about this French Paradox thing.... all this eating fatty things and never getting fat... wahhh....

As far as dieting goes, i've never had to worry about it, but eatig healty is important.

Eating healthy was something that i never did, but i have recently joined the US Air Force, and i was expecting to never get any food, and lose a lot of wieght and such. However, i ate more at breakfast chow during basic training, than i ate at home in a whole day. i mean granted we only had about 10 minutes to eat a full meal, if we were lucky. But i was able to eat a lot more healty, because they didn't allow us to pop, or eat candy. We had to earn breaks where we were allowed to drink and eat junk food, but that wasn't a good idea, because the training was so vigourus, that it'd make you sick. so even though i've graduated BMT(basic military training) i really don't eat or drink mych junk food.(at least not as much as i used to).

Yeah in BMT we ate around 8000 calories a day between our 3meals, and i didn''t gain any weight. But i guess since we marched everywhere, and did PRT(physical readniess training) everyday, it was all burned up. i mean we had to march close to 10 miles a day in total, and then we ran a mile and a half, and did all of our push ups and sit ups and all that.

Hate to say it, Sion, but I don't think you can. They're there for good, as far as I know. Which is a shame, because I've got a gutload of them (literally!). They can be alleviated by loosening up a little though. I've noticed that the fat that caused my stomach to expand in the first place is finally starting to disappear, and with it are going the stretch marks. They're still there, just not as noticeable.

I realized how out of shape I am last night, when I played DDR for two rounds in a row and nearly dropped to the pad, hyperventilating. Drummania is less physically intensive.

This is a health, FOOD, and fitness thread, right?

Fitness
I love food, and when I was around eight years old, I used to eat more than my parents. I wasn't obese, or even that much overweight, but now that I'm fourteen, and that I eat less, but more frequently, I'm in much better shape. I excersize at least three times a day, for more than two hours, and I find that's really helped (although I still have baby fat).

Food (I'm a food enthusiast)
For a long time now (two years ago), I've been reading different books by a Dr. Andrew Weil. Ever since I started following his advice, I've been in a much better mood, I've had a lot more energy, my constant headaches are gone, etc. on the testimonials. Some interesting tidbits of information I found on his website (www.drweil.com): Your body handles dark chocolate (70% or higher) like it handles olive oil, meaning that it lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol, and that it has very low saturated and polyunsaturated fat levels (it's mostly monounsaturated, the heart-healthiest kind). Also, all of the japanese mushrooms (maitake, shiitake, enokidake, mo-er) have different immune-boosting effects. Every time I feel a cold coming on, I make myself a soup with all those mushrooms, tofu, turmeric, galangal, ginger, garlic, and austragulus and burdock roots, and my symptoms disappear. Check out this doctor's website (I know I sound like one of those annoying testimonial people on TV infomercials, and I hate doing that, but I feel the need to share).
And by the way, I cook every one of my meals from scratch, and I don't let my parents get in the way.

Health
Key elements that keep me healthy:
1. Constant excersize
2. More meals in much smaller sizes
3. Austragulus, echinacea, goldenseal root, shiitake, maitake, enokidake, mo-er, ginger, galangal, turmeric, bay leaf, lemongrass, garlic, onion, habanero pepper.
4. Avoid all forms of processed/fast food, including, but not limited to:
TV dinners
Canned food
Fast food
Instant soups/mashed potatoes
Anything you didn't cook from scratch
5. Homeopathic medicine works

I'm making a recipe book for my own personal use, filled with recipes made specifically to modify mood, health, energy, etc. If anyone has any tasty recipes for food or desserts, PM them to me.

Dr. Weil? I remember Kevin Rose (yes, of TechT--erm, G4 fame) going on about him. The link's off his site now, but I wonder what his theories were.
