you're god damn right, after a few attempts and much mucking around, i finally got the NES i ordered for myself for Christmas working! The problem was, as suspected, the 72-pin connector piece. I had tried previously two other times to bend them back in place, but no dice. This time i took extra special care to line up the pins with the connector bands and to my enjoyment it worked the only other problem i had yet to fix was the controller... now, the controller i ordered online ended up not working at all in any way, so i decided to use my old SNES controller with the broken L and R buttons. i got a few NES and SNES controller port schematics and matched up the wires and pulled out my trusty soldering iron (also ordered as part of my christmas gift to myself) although incredibly hackish and looking disgusting, it all functions perfectly now all i need to do is modify the controller port to so the connection doesn't break if i pull on the controller a bit, just to be safe. After that in the near future i'll probably get around to making/modifying a real NES controller port so i can disconnect the controller. I only hardwired it together temporarily because i'm very impatient all in all it was fun finally getting everything in order and now, the obligatory glass of celebratory wine: (edited by Gavin on 01-22-05 12:09 AM) |

You ordered for a Nintendo for Christmas? I guess you're the one that wants it though That has to be the first time I've seen a SNES controller hooked up to the Nintendo plug It's too bad that the controller you got with it didn't work, but hopefully you're able to get one soon. Our NES can be a pain to get working, although I think it's more of a problem with some games, and the fact that the cartridge tray won't stay down half the time when you push on it, but it's amazing that it still functions after 10 or so years |

the earlier years of my life were filled with darkness and an overwhelming feeling of loss... you see, my mother sold our NES when i was but a child. i still get nightmares about it . I haven't owned an NES or played a real working version in probably over 10 years. This is a very glorious moment in my life (edited by Gavin on 01-22-05 12:21 AM) |

The main problem with the NES controllers is that they tend to be... a bit hard on the hands when playing h4rdc0r3z. The corners tend to dig into the hands. Aside from that, though, the NES is wonderful. I still have mine, and would like to get another one. Where'd you buy yours from, Gavin? (also: congrats on soldering the SNES controller to an NES. I'm amazed you did that ) |

Repairing a NES is so simple, in my case it was just a matter of cleaning it up. My controllers was all broken, but it was just little dirty on inside. After cleaning it, it was like new... althought you still have to press hard on one of them. I think I ake apart that one again. >.> I think i'm gonna get a soldering iron myself, I wanted one for quite some time now... |

What, exactly, was the problem? Because my girlfriend's just gives me a blue screen. When mine's dirty, I get blank screens of various colors, but hers is just blue. 72-pin connector, right? (Hope it's easy to replace...)

Gavin: Now that I think about it, I have too, but it usually changes on a restart. And if you've found a 72-pin connector, looks like yo u've likely solved the problem Now if only they had a NES there... instead of just parts. =/ |

I plan on buying myself a top-loader when I get the money to do so... I have two of the non-top-loaders and neither of them work worth a junk... i've dug into them plenty too... one's rendered unrecognizable while the other has just the cover torn off..

I have that same iron <3. Great job man, now try adding a joystick to the NES =D. (wouldn't be too difficult, although it wouldn't support analog control, and only 8 directions ) Check out arcadecontrols.com... this is where I got started on all this wiring game system parts and stuff. |

Originally posted by Uly In theory, I don't see why not. RANDOM FUN FACT MOST OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW: The Atari 2600 uses the same controller port as the Sega Genesis. This means you can hook up an Atari controller to a Genesis and play, although I think the first Sonic the Hedgehog is the only game that's 100% playable. |

I do believe that there are already joysticks for the NES. I'm not sure if there were any 'official' nintendo joysticks, but I know for a fact that my uncle had an NES joystick. Sorta. The NES Advantage was built to be kinda like an arcade console. Not like the 2600 controllers, but still dominated by a joystick. |
