I have the same problem from time to time. You may want to try thinking about all of the things that are more important than just sitting around playing games all day. Y'know, do some homework, hang with friends, or work on some project. As long as you're accomplishing something . EDIT: Also don't quit all at once. It's kind of like an addiction: play 1h the first day, 50 min. the next day, and so forth. It'll make it that much less stressful. (edited by Masterofmario11 on 01-15-05 10:02 AM) |

I dunno what to tell you, you have to break from the habit yourself. You could sign up for an extracirricular activity at school like I did. It's ok to still use them, but try to do something in your schedule so you aren't using it as much. (edited by jasukan on 01-15-05 12:04 PM) |

Definitely go with what Masterofmario11 said, but along with that, if there's someone that can keep track of how long you play a day, and cut you off after a certain amount of time, that'd be even better. It could be someone like a friend or a parent. One of the main things with doing that, is that you might not have another activity to go to after you're done on the computer. What I'd advise to remedy that, is this: before you turn on the computer each day, decide when you'll be done on it (set a reasonable time limit like 1-2 hours), and also decide what you're going to do after your time is done. That could be something like reading a book, cleaning up the area around you, or anything else. Also, if you plan on going on the computer more than once a day (which is understandable), decide when those times will be, and stick to them. As an alternative, there's also programs out there on the internet that you can download, that have the ability to shut down the computer at a certain time each day, or possibly not allow it to be used until a specified time. The only thing is, unless someone else does the setting up, etc. of it (since I'm assuming the settings would at least be password-protected), it'd be your responsibility to make sure you don't take advantage of it I did a google search for programs of those sort, and this was the only one that came up that didn't involve buying extra hardware and stuff. It is shareware, but, well, that can be avoided if you know where to look. :: KidsWatch Time Control Don't think you're the only one that's ever been in this situation. A year or so ago now, I noticed I was spending an increasinly large amount of time on the computer, but now I don't feel that way, as I have things during the week that keep me away from it I was hoping to avoid saying it, but in the end it's going to take your willpower to limit your time on the computer. If you have problems with it though, you can always come back and tell us about them (edited by Karadur on 01-15-05 01:29 PM) |

Hm... Depends what you'd consider to be an "addiction" If it's something like "Whenever I'm home, I'm on the computer/etc" then I'd simply suggest to either spend more time with friends, on the phone, reading, playing board games, listening to music, etc. If it's "I'm always on the computer/etc and shun friends for it", then... oh boy. First thing you need to do there is make sure that you get out of the house a few times a week, aside from school. Hang out with friends, take a walk, do some shopping, go for a bite to eat... just get some fresh air and a change in surroundings. You could also try to set up a schedule - for example, you'll set aside some time each day to do other leisure activities, homework, etc. |

I know your pain your best bet is, as others said, try to get someone else to limit your time. A bit more of an abstract idea, find a friend who has the same problem and try to give the computer up slowly together. Try going a day, then two and eventually a week without using the computer or checking email save for school assignments. If you have problems, call the friend for support, eventually you'll be cracking jokes and laughing and you'll forget about the computer. Not only do you loosen and break the addiction, but you bond as well! |

Uly: Never give up a hobby or something you enjoy for someone of the opposite sex. I think I'm on about 4 hours max, despite my screen name saying I've been on longer. Usually I come home, sign on and leave it running while I'm doing other things. |

Originally posted by UlyOriginally posted by Sabishii I can tell you're obsessed, but trust me, it's not always out of this world. Love is becoming rarer these days and people try to move way too fast. Be loyal to yourself first, because it's the only thing you'll always have. People will come and go, as depressing as that is. Besides, you're only 19, so you've got plenty of time to look. |

I used to be on the computer all the time. And I started to use the net when I was 19 and living on my own. It was something new to me and I would have a lot of fun with it. And besides, I was broke most of the time, and being onlien was somewhat free, save for the bills. As the years went on, I noticed that I was online a lot. If I wasn't at work, I was on the computer. I knew something had to be done. I mean, I would spend 15+ hours on the comp on my days off. So I slowly pushed myself away from the net. Also, loosing the connection during certain times helps too. I just started to play more games, watch my favortie shows, and just go out in general. Since almost a year ago, I've noticed that I've been online less and less now. Sure, there's people online that I still somewhat chat with and that I miss, but I just don't want to be online anymore. Its no longer on the top of my list. It is a slow process, but once you find better things to do, you'll find that you won't be missing the net that much. As far as gaming goes, I've been playing since I was 4, so I am not going to stop there, neither is my fiance. In fact, thanks to a few certian games, they've helped me to be online less. If you want to spend less time online, take your time with it, don't force it. Also, just going outside and taking an hour walk has helped me too. |

That's easy. Go out into the world! When I'm bored of the net and I've got nothing else to do, I take my bike into the countryside and cycle along paths and around lakes. It's also nice to take a packed lunch and eat it on a sunny day. Fortunately, Spring is coming up (if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, that is, heh heh ^^;;, and it's the best time to get out and about. |

Ziff, I somehow doubt Mr. Houou lives in a media-defined "Worst city in the world", either. I find that whenever I need time away from the net, I just sit in my house. If it's dark, I'll just close my eyes and relax, but if there's light somewhere, I'll get a book, or find my cat or something, and just relax like that. There's plenty of safe, non-internet based ways to waste your time nowadays! |
