If nanorobots will do exist someday, we probably won't know.
But if they do, we are more than fucked.
Wehnever i heard about them, they are threated like a virus, because their programamtion can be changed at any time. Even if he was in your body to fix something, some hacker could change it and make he destroy everything.
And another thing, our immune system would detect them, but it wouldn't be able to do nothing.

As long as they arnt connected to the internet in anyway or connected to a computer that is connected to the inter net you cant hack them. Try and hack a computer that isnt hooked up to anything else.

The Nanobots actually start out as a single robot, which deconstructs 'inactive' molecules next to it, and create an additional nano-bot, eventually, they're programmed to transform a certain amount of material into nanos. The Nanos then can reform themselves into a molecular structure identicle to that of any material we need.

Of course, that is about the most dangerous fucking weapon I have ever heard of.

Nanotechnology has as great a potentional for harm as for good. People could hack strains of these things to destroy the body any way they want, to target the brain or other things. Preventitive measures will certainly be learned as the threat continues. I can't imagine what they would be. I'm sure as hell not putting those things in me unless I know DAMN well they won't turn against me in any way shape or form.

Nanotechnology won't all come at once. We already have some nano products on the market. It's much like the industrial revolution before the invention of the spinning jenny (yes, I know that there's more than one invention to blame, but that one comes to mind today).

Some day, materials like buckey tubes will be so common that you can buy coats stronger than diamonds. Eventually we'll get to enjoy inventions like utility fog. A bit later, universal assemblers will be created, and then we'll be screwed.

There is a small chance that people will be responsible and we won't reduce our planet to a blob of grey goo. Hopefully someone will have the foresight use some drastic safety measures. Mine would be to make universal assemblers that are crushed by atmospheric pressure and which have trouble manipulating gasses - that way, if everything goes wrong, we can take refuge in lowlands.

Conclusion: be optimistic, but have a good bomb shelter and buy a summer home on Mars.

You know, being able to create any molecule is pretty fucking dangerous, because you could easily CREATE aids instead of curing it if you'd want to and such. Also, what's a universal assembler?

Anal USB? No thanks. My anus is output only and I intend to keep it that way.

The real scary part isn't the possibility for abuse by hackers. It's the possibility for abuse by government.

You think they could possible control your thoughts or read them with nanomachines? That seems a bit unreal to me.

I don't know why you'd bother trying to figure out how to controll thoughts when you could controll bodies, or, better yet, just dissasemble them and make whatever you need.

Universal assemblers are the generic nanotech device that most people talk about: little robots that manipulate molecules.

Well maybe you could control ones body with nanomachines but they'd have to be all over your body and your nervous system.

Control your brain with them? No. Have them build a mini-computer that could be used to do so right into your brain? Sure.

Dude first we must understand the brain and the brain is so complex it can't fully understand itself. but i think we could just make a kill switch for the people that have it inside them that they control.

One day there will be machines that can take total control of you wouldnt that be sweet though. They would connect your brain with an HD and when you are born transfer all information about the world into your brain via Anal USB(cant help it just an evil idea.) just a dumb thought. Nnonmachines would be very useful, i heard about something where parents have a GPS installed into their child so they can always know where the child is.

To create a Molecule wouldnt the machine inside you have to have access to whatever creates molecules?(Sorry dont know the technical terms). If they could control your thoughts and nervous system then they could probly insert thoughts into your brain and remotely control you.

I can see that with all this power it probably WILL be used for bad purposes.

And oh connecting the computer and the brain... that's awesome and scary at the same time.

Mind controlling? Not gonna happen soon at least...

If you're interested more in learning about nanotechnology and what could be done with it, read Prey by Michael Crichton. It's a fictitious book, but it's pretty interesting.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

There have already been a few trans-continental experiments allowing people to share 'emotions' where a small electrical tranceiver emits a small electrical signal that causes hormone releases to occur in relation to that sex's emotional feelings.

There are other things going on. Mind control is from the last 40 years. Thank you MK-Ultra.

I've learned my share of Nano-Technology by playing the Deus Ex games. It could be extremely dangerous. Basically it can alter anything, you could switch a H2O molecule with Carbon molecule and completely change our facts of everything. But it could also be used for the good, as some of you have stated. Nano is already currently being used for things, but I think it will only be a handful of years until Nano-technology is used often and discussed a lot about like cloning has come to be.

I believe it will soon be very possible, also with augumentation, altering genes and the DNA of a host making them similar to that of a cyborg.

If you think about it , if you suddenly start dying for whatever reason the nanomachine could process the problem and fix it, but that would require it to have knowledge of everything thats going on in your body and it would have to interpret whats going on and if it wrongly interpreted...

But that would have to require some type of memory for the machine because it might even have to monitor everything going on in your body.
