At the risk of really damaging any sort of "reputation" I hold with Super Mario World hackers, I am releasing a Super Mario World recovery tool which fully 'deprotects' ROMs locked by Lunar Magic. (A small note before I go on: . And will remain unsupported for a very long time.) I have been lurking around this forum for quite some time, and it seems like any talk about deprotecting ROMs is strictly forbidden. It's insanely silly if you ask me. (RTFM for more info on this subject.) My only hope is that this thread does not get locked or deleted just because it deals with deprotecting ROMs. This project is both legitimate and non-destructive. To silence the news would be more disrespectable than protecting hacks*. There now. I just had to get that out of the way! The zip file contains some badly written notes on the project, complete program source code, pre-compiled executable, and some documentation to explain it all. (And a little bit of sillyness within the documentation just for kicks.) The source code is licensed under GNU General Public License (GPL), meaning anyone is free to redistribute the source code so long as all GPL notices stay in tact. Further, anyone is free to make use of the source code however they see fit, so long as any derivative programs making use of the source are also licensed under the GPL. Read the included gpl.txt for more info. If you want a screenshot, here's a REALLY old one that I had on Panicus: http://parasyte.panicus.org/rlm/rlm1.png Last, but certainly not least: Click here to download RLM. * 'Protecting hacks' is something of an oxymoron, don't you think? A good choice to not support DW:TLC. This will both help and hurt; people may be a bit afraid that someone will steal their custom GFX creations or level ideas or whathaveyou, but people who accidentally locked it will be saved. Double edged sword, but I think it'll help more than hurt. After all, we can always banish the theives. |

1. Nice work. 2. I hate you. 3. Again, nice work. 4. While people who steal graphics with this will be easy enough to get rid of, I don't particularly like the idea of people using LM as a sort of strategy guide for hard hacks, or editing levels to get around hard things. It completely defeats the point. |

Originally posted by Kyouji CrawWell, they could just use Game Genie codes, save-states, walkthroughs (if someone makes one for the hack), and other such things. You can't stop them from cheating if they're so inclined. Basically you're left with the Honor System. |

Not to mention, often times just seeing the solution is not as easy as actually completing it.

It is if it's just a puzzle =/ Plus, worst of all out of this... It prevents me from hiding easter eggs around since everyone will know where to look... Which SUCKS. |

If I were to attempt to get Fu's hack(Demo World: The Legend Continues) unlocked, the only thing I would be seeking is the SMB3-style pipes. I can get ExGFX from the ExGFX Workshop. Level ideas I can get a lot of. Same with overworld idea. So, it would be just about useless for me to unlock Demo World: The Legend Continues to steal ExGFX, levels, or overworlds. The moral of this story is: ASM hacks are more valuble than ExGFX, levels, and overworlds combined! |

Why? What can you do with movement pipes that you can't do with clusters of secondary entrances?

And to anyone who wants to complain: You can't steal anything with this program that you couldn't have already stolen before with some skill. |

I was only against the idea of unprotecting ROMs because I like to spend a long time hiding nice things or setting optional puzzles and stuff like that. Now there isn't much reason for me to bother.

and, in the end, if you're just worried about people "stealing" your stuff or hacking your work, then, to be fair, you ought not hack SMW to begin with. after all, I don't think the developers would like people hacking their work, but you hack their stuff with impunity and then cry foul when someone wants to do the same to you? hack and hack alike. |

Sendy: My thoughts exactly =/ There should be a way to use this program to make it so some levels aren't unlocked by this, to prevent easter eggs from being found. Vystrix: Please don't start this discussion. No one has complained about thieves thus far, you don't have to start this. With a little time, any one could have created a small assembly hack to hold a button and scroll around the entire level with no collisions, physics, etc. (Imagine the Sonic 2 "Debug Mode") And wouldn't you know it? Your easter eggs would all be found. Vystrix Nexoth put it best; "You can't stop them from cheating if they're so inclined." |

BTW, taking the moral high ground about hacking is dumb. The ethics of hacking a game for an obsolete system and the ethics of hacking a hack of a hack are incompatible. Let me make it simpler - if you hack a 10 year old game, you aren't harming Nintendo or any of the authors of the game. They made their money and the games were enjoyed and played long before all the secrets inside them were uncovered. Now consider the average fan 'hacker' who produces anything worthwhile. He puts in an insane amount of hours, often inbetween a dayjob and social life. He works hard for no profit whatsoever... All he wants is the satisfaction that people will be frustrated, delighted, confused and amused by his work as they play it. He takes no claim for the original authors' work, and states that only the level design, graphics (if he/she made them), and extra ASM hacking was done by him. THAT is why said hackers wish to have their hacks locked... So that their hard work can pay off in that way. |

Parasyte: Not all easter eggs could be found that way; Anything that doesn't look like a pipe and acts like one wouldn't be found by that. Plus, that wouldn't necessarily tell you exactly how to get to it legitimately, whereas using LM to find them would.

Now what we need is a Graphics Protection Workshop. You put your custom GFX in there, and then everyone will know if someone is stealing GFX!

Originally posted by Kyouji Craw Well, not everyone. I won't, because I won't be unlocking hacks to figure out puzzles or find easter eggs. Where's the fun in that? And I'm sure there are a lot of people like me. I did download this, though. I'd rather have this when I accidentally lock the only copy of my hack than have to search for it and waste time. Honestly, I think it's a good idea...but I just know it's going to be abused. I don't like the idea of someone going into my hack and figuring out all the secrets. Then again, that's their loss, so pshaw to them. |
