http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

No screen, 1GB. Completely random song picks.

A bit overpriced at $100, IMO. I know someone with a $50 MP3 player that has more features, including shuffle. Not much else to say about this device... I wonder if this ever will make it off the shelf.

I'm quite happy with my 20GB iPod that has an optional shuffle feature.

I wouldn't use it, because I kind of hate shuffle. It's interesting though, because the $99 version has 512MB, and a lot of $149 players just have 256MB (the $149 version of the Shuffle has a whole GB).

There's a way to go through them in order, too. There's a switch at the back that has three modes, Off, Shuffle and Playlist Order.

That's a user, not a product.

Anyway, not being able to see what I'm listening to == bad.

Frankly, I think it's a good idea, and good competition to all the cheaper flash based MP3 players out there.

As for not being able to see what's being played -- I don't think it'd really worry me. I don't mind not knowing what's going next, and besides, if you don't like a song, you can always just click "next"...

I don't know, if your willing to shell out $100 for an iPod like that you might as well as save up for something much better.

Considering that on my way to get lunch today, I heard 256Mb stuff advertised for the same price (on sale!) I actually don't think it's a bad price at all either.

It'd be a good thing for something like my Mum. Course, I wouldn't suggest it for somebody who's real serious about their music.... get a real iPod if you are.

So in the end this is the "super budget but not really budget priced iPod" right?

I'll... um... wait to eventually buy a real one when the price is good enough. That'll likely be when the next generation of players comes out, of course.

Yet another question....

When will iPodLinux be ported to the iPod shuffle?

I'm just kidding, of course.

It -is- budget priced. Most flash players below $99 are guaranteed to be more useful as USB HDs than as music players, and in fact a lot of USB stick HD makers just put music playing in as a freebie because the OEM maker's cost is negligible. Apple probably saved a dozen by opting for no display at all.

I would have bought this though: http://members.shaw.ca/ventro2/nano_large.jpg.

I rather get a iPod right away anyway, if I would get a portable media player. Heh, funny how the main selling point have been around like forever. Thought that's a common company trick.

Nano looks like an electrical tootbrush and iPod shuffle like a thermoter that you insert into your butt.

...and i'm planning to buy a iPod for my sister anyway.

Wow, what a piece of crap. My $100 MP3 CD player has shuffle too (even though the manual says it doesn't work for MP3s ), as well as simple playlist support, multiple levels of bass boost, a really cool option that makes voices sound more realistic, auto-shutoff when not playing, and a remote that clips onto your shirt or whatever. Plus of course it plays CDs, and for MP3s you get 700MB per disc, and they're only like 2 bucks each.

And come on, we're all thinking it... The Nano looks like a dildo. Actually, that's not a bad idea. iDildo, vibrates to the beat.

I was thinking in terms of HD space to cost actually. I know that the lowest ones in terms of HD space aren't $20 or anything, but it just seems like such an odd scale.
