Might be the only Mac I can afford. Doesn't look very customisable... |

For my knowledge, when you get a mac, you're stuck with that mac.

Jesper: what exactly is different between Mac OS 9 and OS X that I can't run my old programs? There wasn't a processor shift, was there? Now the programs I'm using are FAT, since they run under the old 68000 series and the Power PC series. But they were made right around the time of the shift between those. Is there any work around for this short of me putting an OS 9 system folder on a flash drive and using that?

Originally posted by MathOnNapkinsWell, for starters, Mac OS X is built on an entirely different foundation. Mac OS X is actually based on UNIX, or more specifically, BSD. Mac OS 9, however, runs as a subsystem - a special environment started via the "Classic" app - under specific circumstances allowing you to run all your old apps (OS 9 or earlier) alongside the new ones. And by all I mean the absolute majority, there's apparently a select few that do not run. The processor shift you mentioned did happen, but every OS version since then has had built into the system an emulator that allows you to run 68K-apps natively. |

Well, my thoughts: 1) Pretty. Very small... and very cute. 2) If I got one, I'd up the RAM, and I'd likely get the faster of the two 3) It'd be good to get me that second Mac I'd like, for in the lounge... I use my PC less and less, but it'd be nice to have a faster Mac. I've been considering the iMac G5, but this is more affordable.... 4) It'd be a good suggestion for my brother, who'd like a cheap computer.... (if he gets a Mac, I guess I'll have to spend less time fixing his inevitable porn site related spyware problems, for starters) 5) It'd be a great suggestion for my mother or nanna, who both find themselves fed up with Windows frequently 6) They'd be great at work with a KVM switch for when our analysts need to occasionally support OS X... (pity our call logging software probably won't work on Mac though, or I'd be using it all the time) Their size makes them perfect! 7) I've been hearing about this on the rumor mill for ages, glad it was more than a rumor!! 8) Pretty (edited by Tarale on 01-11-05 10:07 PM) (edited by Tarale on 01-11-05 10:08 PM) |

I'd rather get a real Mac or just a $500 PC (It IS possible to build a somewhat gaming oriented PC for ~ $500, even if it isn't the best).

There is thoose switch thingies where you can switch the input from a computer to another with a simple switch. Which is apparently for peopel who don't want yet another computer on their table but want to have two computers. I have seen a such thing in my school.

Originally posted by Kitten YifferYou're referring to KVM switches (Keyboard, Video, Mouse). They kick ass. Sadly, I just have one for PS/2+VGA. I'd want a USB+DVI switch, but most companies seem to miss such a product. (Sad; DVI is, unsurprisingly, way better than VGA, comes with most new TFTs and graphics cards, and VGA can even flow through a DVI connector via different pins - no real conversion is actually done, so it won't lag!) Edit: Belkin carries a USB+DVI switch! (edited by Jesper on 01-12-05 12:23 PM) |

Looks pretty cool, at the very least. Though I wonder where it's designed to go (IE will there be problem if you put it on the floor as you would with a typical PC tower)...my computer desk has literally NO room for anything else on it with monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. |

If it was a little bigger, you could use it as a mousepad Seriously though, if you have a TFT, just stick it under the display (near the foot), and if you have a CRT, tape it to the top of it. The general idea is that if you can fit a CD jewel case on the desk, you could fit this in. |

Heh, then if I buy that switcher together... well I do consider using a seperate screen for the macintosh or something. The only spare screen I have is a old SVGA screen and a old Macintosh screen. Which is surely SVGA too. ...maybe I should wait for awhile, it may get even more cheaper. |

Originally posted by Kitten YifferActually, no. The dollar's in the can and the hardware is pretty much the low boundary for what they produce these days (aside from iPod CPUs). The only real reasons to wait is to avoid some problems with the first round of units, and to get OS X 10.4 (Tiger) instead of 10.3 (Panther), when it ships before the summer. |

computers like that don't look like they allow for a whole lot of additions or changes.... my comptuer has tons and tons of free space.... I could probably add a TB of hard drive space into it, if I had the money.... plus a gig and a half of ram.... and still have room for another CD Drive..... I would rather have a big computer that is versatile, than that little dinky one that is stuck that way |

Heh, I have an old computer like that, tons of room for expansion. It'd kick ass if it weren't too old to use anything relatively new.Originally posted by Ziffski So I'm not the only one who compared that. It's got at least 1.5 inches to go before it catches up to me. Seriously, if I needed a Mac for some reason, I'd probably get one of those. |

Originally posted by HyperHackerYeah, I know. A whopping 2.0 inches thick. geeo, if they had not made it so small they probably would have been able to include more HD space. I would have liked dual RAM slots if not anything else, simply because 1GB RAM sticks are bloody expensive. But again. Firewire or USB 2.0 HDs are widely available. So are external disc drives. But I get your point. |

The more I think about this, the more I want one. It WILL need more RAM though. I know from experience that I want more than 256 for OS X. |

I'll definately consider getting one for browsing purposes. All I'd need is firefox, Photoshop, FTP, text editor and IM programs and I'd be ready to go

Originally posted by Kasumi-AstraRegarding programs on OS X, for anyone who wants to know: A great text editor is SubEthaEdit. Despite being plain awesome with syntax highlighting and lots of supported languages out of the box (and making a popup menu for stuff like functions, declares, method definitions, etc), you can also use it to host a server where you can edit the document live with other SEE users. I used this with a board member to debug a javascript once, and it worked great. If you want an IM program, you want Adium. Adium is an open source multi-IM client based on libgaim (which surprisingly means GAIM's lib, gasp). It has styles for the message view and the most customizable contact list I've seen since... ever. The only good FTP program I've found is Transmit. Other programs either don't work in the same "your stuff on the left, the server on the right" principle, or they try to build on it which mostly turns out confusing. The jury's still out on drawing programs; to get a Photoshop license I'd have to trade in my Windows CS CD, and GIMP just doesn't work that well. However, since I have a PowerBook I also have a trackpad, so thankfully I won't be doing much drawing. Paint Shop Pro for Windows is still the best image editing app ever. |

Hmm, I haven't tried SubEthaEdit, I've been using TextEdit, vim or Taco HTML Edit depending on my mood at the time. I can definitely concur with what's been said re: Adium and Transmit. I tried Fire as an IM program, but never got real fond of it. With software things, I have three depending on what I need to do. I have Photoshop CS, which is fine and generally I use for actual photos these days, Corel Painter 8, which I have used to draw things on here with (requires tablet), and Pixen, which is generally used for pixel art. Out of those, only Pixen is free, and it's pretty cute I also recommend "Quicksilver", it's a search tool I've been using for some months now, and it stops me going through the Finder to open an App or find things. Click the icon, start typing "ter" and it will bring up the Terminal, etc. |
