Okay, my list: Popular Games I Find Overrated: Final Fantasy VI. No, not VII. VI. I find this game to be the Tool of the video game world--good, but unjustly deified by many people who choose to believe the game's flaws don't exist. The Grand Theft Auto series. OMG d00ds lets sh00t teh h00kar5!!!! No thanks. Watching my brother cheat his way through practically the entire series post-III did little to increase my desire to play them. Any Zelda after A Link to the Past, though that's more a result of my being terrible at Ocarina of Time. Unpopular Games I Like: Deadly Towers. As Rydain said, far from the complete pile of trash everyone makes it out to be. Unlike Rydain, I actually played it start-to-finish, without the Uber-Meyer code. Battletoads. Popular, I suppose, but I like it more than most, despite its terrible-at-times programming. Amplitude. Pity this game didn't sell more than it did. Great rhythm-type game. |

Originally posted by RydainQuoted for emphasis. This was the second SNES game I ever played, next to SMW. I never owned an SNES, but my brother occassionally rented one, and usually got to games as well. (great service, that was... too bad the convience store still doesn't do that). Rydain said it best when he said that this game has a "Metric Assload of Secrets". (to say the least) Half of the secrets of the game I never discovered until playing it with an emulator. I didn't even know about the "Behind the Stairs" secret. And what's cool is, every time I play it, I nearly always discover something I missed. I wouldn't be suprised if I'm still missing a lot of 'em. GREAT GAME! |

Judging by this topic, I'd say DKR, due to it's sluggish controls (honestly, planes and karts should be nippy, not all... Slidey and crap.. The planes are especially annoying to control), and it's uninteresting track layout. I felt no desire to play through it all again, felt more like a chore than anything... Maybe I'm just spoilt by the Mario Kart series. The Wizpig races were fun, though. Tricky, but fun. ..Anyway, other overrated games, and I point out this doesn't mean they're bad games or that I don't like them... Halo & Halo 2. Haven't played them but I'm just fed up of hearing about them, they can't be *THAT* good. Chrono Trigger, great game but has some distinct flaws, such as a slightly up and down difficulty level and the uselessness of some magic spells. Great battle system too but there was so much more that could of been made of it, a few of the bosses became a tad 'samey' near the end. Plus the final boss looked stupid. He was cooler as the giant cyclops hedgehog of doom. Oh, and Chrono looks dumb in official art. Final Fantasy VII, for obvious overreatedness. OoT, because it's just not as fun as ALttP. Wonderful game, wonderful atmosphere, but not as fun, in my opinion. |

Basically I can look at any top ten game list and I would find any game overated. It's funny how people take offence when you say overated, even if that's not a bad thing. The game could be awesome yet overated. I know alot of games who is like that. Well, Chrono trigger comes to mind. Earthbound beats that game anyday... ...I just saw Earthbound on a swedish Auction site and Chrono trigger. The Chrono trigger one sadly got more attention but the Earthbound one hardly got any bids. I probably should bid on it. |

Emptyeye - Yes, you did indeed [beat Deadly Towers legitimately], and I will forever be singing your praises because of that. *is not worthy* JefF - That was one of the first games I got for my SNES. I played it obsessively for months, and I still didn't find a handful of rooms until after I started messing around with it on an emulator. I opened up the ROM in a hex editor, saw the titles of the ones I was missing, and went looking for them. Even then, I still needed other people's help because I just couldn't find those last room entrances myself. I was so bummed out when Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt (the sequel of sorts, which was based on the cartoon) wound up being much more linear and with far fewer secrets. It was a good game (and quite a challenge), but still, bummer. On a more general note Dragon Warrior II was such a disappointment to me. "Huzzah! The world's much bigger and you have a multi-person party!" Yeah...but said party includes one good fighter and two wimpy magic users, which didn't appeal to me (I prefer to have a more fighting-heavy party so I don't have to worry as much about running out of MP and not being able to do diddlysquat) and there comes a point midgame at which the difficulty curve becomes a cliff. All the enemies I ran into were either jokingly easy or fricking overpowered, so leveling up was really boring or really dangerous (take your pick). Dragon Warrior III (one of my all-time favorite games) was about fifty kazillion times better. |

Emptyeye: Have you tried Minish Cap yet? Dragon Warrior II was... unique. At least III and IV (and of course all the ones that followed) were way more open ended, but you had your fighter, your weak mage and your "you're lucky if she does more than 1-2 damage late in the game" mage. I still liked the game though... but I think the GBC remake did it more justice. |

Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Great soundtracks, underappreciated Gun Valkyrie Gorgeous graphics, challenging, actually fun Shenmue Most fun collecting phone numbers, ever. One game I hate: Alien Hominid Poorly programmed, too much emphasis on style, none on quality. |

Colleen - Did they tweak anything in the DW II remake? We have the Final Fantasy I & II cart, and while watching Rando play through Final Fantasy, I was happy to see that they ditched the old spell level-specific magic point system (which I never liked) in favor of the standard generic magic points that virtually every other RPG has. I'm wondering if any aspects of DW II were similarly made less annoying. Ziffski's mention of Shenmue reminded me of an early PS2 game that I loved (and that I'm told was similar) - Shadow of Destiny. This unusual game from the team that created Silent Hill is more of an interactive movie than anything else, but the top-notch setting, characters, and story sucked me right in, so I certainly didn't mind. You start off knowing very little about any of the above, and you learn more gradually throughout the game by triggering cut scenes and ultimately seeing multiple endings. (All of said endings are quite different from one another.) I never managed to see everything the game had to offer, but I got hours of relaxing fun out of it. |

It was one of our first PS2 games. Rando had just bought the console and there wasn't much of a selection of games available yet, and I was very happy to come across something that seemed interesting to me. We have Shenmue as well (I randomly picked it up during some used game sale a while ago), but I haven't gotten around to playing it, probably because the Dreamcast is in the basement and I don't feel like sitting down there with a game. I need to try it at some point. |

Resident Evil. Any of them. I'd love to watch someone play the games because I know they have a more than competent storyline, but the control method is simply too horrible for me to make any inroads. It feels like the game is making it easy for me to get eaten by zombies because that;s what tends to happen in zombie movies. Uh, no, I'd rather a crisp clean control method, thanks - like Ocarina of Time This is where I had a benefit... I played Link to the Past after Ocarina, because I got a SNES extremely late. When I play LttP, I can see where Ocarina has expanded, and that the gameworld in LttP is far more expansive because of the upper limit of it's complexity was lower than that of OoT. Nevertheless, I tend to feel awquard whenever someone immediately compares it with LttP. True, it has some flaws, but for goodness sake look at what is there! It's Miyamoto's masterpiece, bar none, and you will miss out on a piece of gaming history if you don't play it. |

I criticised it but I never said it's not to be played. It's *awesome*, it's a very, very enjoyable game, and yes, OoT has a wonderful atmosphere, great graphics, lovely settings and memorable foes. However, on a purely gameplay standpoint, I found ALttP to simply be more enjoyable in style. I also found Majora's Mask to be more enjoyable than OoT, with tons more stuff packed in there. But, OoT is still an utter classic and deserves to be played. A masterpiece like a fine piece of art, indeed, but not *necessarily* the better game. But miles better than the vast majority of games out there. |

Sorry, it was more of a response to general feeling about OoT (I agree with you about Majora, it's definately the Zelda player's alternative to OoT). I mean, Zelda fandom has the saMe problem as Final Fantasy fandom. There are a lot of people who are all too ready to disown the revolutionary games that belong to their series (FFVII, OoT). However, thanks for actually justifying your stance properly on it. It's a lot more helpful than "OMG FINAL FANTASY VII MOST OVERATED GAME EVAR". That stuff really stinks. |

I played Majoras mask way more than OOT. And well, I find OOT/MM slightly more enjoyable than LTTP. It's person from person, and not everyone have the same taste. (and some fanboys should just accept that... ; However, there is no such thing as the best game ever. It's just something personal. Like if I had to take something, it would be Civ II. But alot of people is just gonna disagree. |

Originally posted by Rydain Nothing radical like that, but I believe both of your supporting characters can use more equipment than they could in the NES version (The Prince of Cannock's strongest weapon is now the Light Sword), which makes them stronger than they were. I believe the Princess is generally more able to take damage too. |
