Voltaire said in Micromegas, "We are but intelligent atoms" -- And the theory of chaos extends this statement: As small as we may be, we are a mass of ever evolving matter, nothing more. From dust we have spawned, and to dust we shall return. Or some shit.

That's an picture of earth, taken from Voyager 1.

Yeah, we are just an spot in the universe...

And the chaos theory is nifty. Yawn and you may start the extinction of life on another planet.

The chaos theory is just perfect.
But on the other hand, there is no such thing as chaos.

I've seen that photo before... Scientifically pointless, but important at a human level.

The other planets were on the photo as well, but were only a tiny bit larger. The dot of Earth was actually less than a pixel big without any clearing up.

I'm not sure if it mentions it, but the "Speck of dust" analogy comes from the fact that when one of the scientists was going through the archives, she wiped over the photo to get rid of dust. She discovered that one particular speck od dust was, in fact, our home

Yes that thing does scare me a little, but you know there is no way to go anywhere else from what we know we may be the only ones out there. Kind of wierd, but you know in the bible it never says anything about aliens so it doesnt matter to me. Why fear what won't matter to you.

Y'know, it's kind of sad that my state of mind has come to this...I was reading the supposedly profound statement that was linked to in this thread, and instead of reflecting on how small our "great" accomplishments really are and how, in the space of time, incredibly brief a single human life is in comparison...

Instead of pondering that, I kept thinking of that song from Animaniacs that goes,

"It's a great big universe, and we're all really puny
We're just tiny little specks about the size of Mickey Rooney...."

Yep. So deep.

The way I see it, you can interpret this two ways:

1) Think the world is pointless, along with everything in it, and sit on your lazy butt and do nothing. Or...

2)Make the most of what we have, and live what life we have to the fullest.

Really, you have to go with the latter. It's really all you can do, and win, lose or draw, you can't go wrong with that.

Here comes the possibility almost nobody ever thinks about:

What if making the most of what you have is done by sitting on your lazy butt and doing nothing?
